Controlled trial of the effect of negative dietary cation-anion difference prepartum diets on milk production, reproductive performance, and culling of dairy cows.

Our objective was to assess the effects of feeding negative dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) prepartum diets on milk production, reproductive performance, and culling. Cows from 4 commercial farms in Ontario, Canada were enrolled in a pen-level controlled trial from November 2017 to April 2019. Close-up pens (1 per farm) with cows 3 wk before calving were randomly assigned to a negative DCAD (TRT; -108 mEq/kg of dry matter; target urine pH 6.0-6.5) or a control diet (CON; +105 mEq/kg of dry matter with a placebo supplement). Each pen was fed TRT or CON for 3 mo (1 period), and then switc

Observations on the genital tract of cull ewes.

Genital tracts were collected from non-pregnant cull ewes in early April and examined for macroscopic abnormalities. An assessment was made of the possible effect of any abnormality on the ability of the animal to become pregnant. It was found that 23.2 per cent of the tracts had abnormalities and it was considered that 16.8 per cent had abnormalities likely to interfere with the establishment of pregnancy.

Investigation and Management of an Outbreak of Lead Intoxication in an Extensively Managed Beef Herd.

Fifteen hundred 12−15-month-old tropically adapted heifers inadvertently grazed a paddock which had a refuse dump in it containing burnt out vehicle batteries. The cattle grazed this paddock for approximately seven days. Subsequently these cattle were managed as two cohorts (cull and potential replacement breeding animals). Deaths commenced in the cull heifer group approximately 18 days after initial exposure to the refuse dump during relocation to a feedlot. Mortalities continued for 12 days, with other heifers showing clinical signs of marked central nervous system dysfunction requiring euth

Eucoleus boehmi infection in red fox (Vulpes vulpes) from Italy.

In the last decade an increase of the number of red foxes in anthropized habitats across European countries, including Italy, has been observed. This pones implications in terms of disease transmission between wildlife and domestic animals; in fact, there are evidences of the role of foxes as reservoirs and amplifiers of a broad spectrum of parasites infecting pets. The present study evaluated the prevalence of Eucoleus boehmi, an emerging extra-intestinal nematodes of the Capillariinae subfamily, in red foxes. The nasal passages and sinuses of 179 red foxes culled from several areas of northe

Effect of housing density on reproductive parameters and corticosterone levels in nursing mice.

The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (Guide) recommends minimum floor space per mouse based on weight, with no other factors considered. We conducted a randomized experiment to evaluate the effect of housing density on reproductive indices and corticosterone levels in lactating mice. Female mice matched for age, strain, and date-of-pregnancy were housed individually. At parturition the dams were randomly allocated to have litters culled or remain intact. The experimental group had litters culled to meet the Guide's space density requirement. Litters of the second group were mai

Epidemiological characteristics of human and animal rabies in Azerbaijan.

The Caucasus is a region of geopolitical importance, in the gateway between Europe and Asia. This geographical location makes the region equally important in the epidemiology and control of transboundary infectious diseases such as rabies. Azerbaijan is the largest country in the Caucasus, and although rabies is notifiable and considered endemic, there is little information on the burden of human and animal rabies. Here, we describe a cross-disciplinary international collaboration aimed at improving rabies control in Azerbaijan. Partial nucleoprotein gene sequences were obtained from animal ra

Association between hoof trimming frequency in primiparous cows and hoof health and survival in second lactation.

Lameness, mostly resulting from claw lesions, causes major welfare problems in the dairy industry. One way to prevent claw lesions is hoof trimming, but the overall effect and the optimal hoof trimming frequency are unknown. In a retrospective cohort study, we investigated the association between hoof trimming frequency in primiparous cows and hoof health and culling in the second lactation. We based our analysis on breed, calving, and culling data in the period 2015 to 2018 for 30,613 primiparous cows in 202 Swedish dairy herds. Of the cows enrolled, 20% were not hoof-trimmed, 30% were trimme

Interactions between parasitism and migration in monarch butterflies.

In many species, migration can increase parasite burdens or diversity as hosts move between diverse habitats with different parasite assemblages. On the other hand, migration can reduce parasite prevalence by letting animals escape infested habitats, or by exacerbating the costs of parasitism, leading to culling or dropout. How the balance between these negative and positive interactions is maintained or how they will change under anthropogenic pressure remains poorly understood. Here, we summarize the relationship between migration and infectious disease in monarch butterflies, finding that m

Ovarian abscesses and pyometra in a domestic rabbit.

Infection with Pasteurella multocida can induce pyoendometritis, pyosalpingitis, and ovarian abscesses in rabbits. The likelihood of rabbits developing clinical pasteurellosis is predisposed by factors such as buildup of ammonia fumes, ambient temperature changes and drafts, reproduction, older age, existence of carriers, and poor sanitation. Traditionally, prevention of pasteurellosis in rabbits has focused on identifying suspected carriers and culling those animals from the rabbitry.

The mucosal response to secondary infection with Ancylostoma ceylanicum in hamsters immunized by abbreviated primary infection.

We assessed the mucosal response of previously infected hamsters to low-dose challenge with the hookworm, Ancylostoma ceylanicum. Hamsters were assigned to five treatment groups (Groups 1-5, respectively): naïve, controls; uninterrupted primary infection from day 0; infected, but treated with anthelmintic on day 35 p.i.; challenge control group given only the second infection on day 63; infected initially, cleared of worms and then challenged. Animals were culled on days 73 and 94 (10 and 31 days after challenge), but additional animals were culled from Group 5 on days 80 and 87. The results s

Is Hiding Foot and Mouth Disease Sensitive Behavior for Farmers? A Survey Study in Sri Lanka.

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) has a long history in Sri Lanka and was found to be endemic in various parts of the country and constitutes a constant threat to farmers. In Sri Lanka, currently there is no regular, nationwide vaccination programme devised to control FMD. Therefore, improving farmers' knowledge regarding distinguishing FMD from other diseases and ensuring prompt reporting of any suspicion of FMD as well as restricting movement of animals are critical activities for an effective FMD response effort. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between f

Effects of Culling on Leptospira interrogans Carriage by Rats.

We found that lethal, urban rat control is associated with a significant increase in the odds that surviving rats carry Leptospira interrogans. Our results suggest that human interventions have the potential to affect and even increase the prevalence of zoonotic pathogens within rat populations.

Will Culling White-Tailed Deer Prevent Lyme Disease?

White-tailed deer play an important role in the ecology of Lyme disease. In the United States, where the incidence and geographic range of Lyme disease continue to increase, reduction of white-tailed deer populations has been proposed as a means of preventing human illness. The effectiveness of this politically sensitive prevention method is poorly understood. We summarize and evaluate available evidence regarding the effect of deer reduction on vector tick abundance and human disease incidence. Elimination of deer from islands and other isolated settings can have a substantial impact on the r

Intestinal lymphomas in golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Pathological examination of 226 adult hamsters culled in a commercial breeding colony because of health deterioration revealed malignant lymphomas arising from the intestines of 24 animals. Histologically the tumours were classified as centrocytic-centroblastic lymphomas. They were transplantable with cellular suspension, but not with serum or cell-free ascitic fluid of the tumour bearers. The tumor did not metastasize into the spleen. Other types of lymphomas were not diagnosed.

Urogenital diseases and their effect on reproductive performance in high-parity sows.

UNLABELLED: In a Slowakian indoor pig production unit (2423 sows), from June to December 2002 all culled sows with excessive vulval discharge at culling, and with vulval discharge and periparturient disease in their previous history were subjected to retrospective lifetime production analysis. The sows were assigned to nine groups according to parity (parity 1-9). Average total litter size, average live-born litter size, average stillbirth rate, average mummy rate, and average litter weaning weight were evaluated retrospectively for all births. Non-culled sows represented the control animals.

Procedures for preventing the transmission of foot-and-mouth disease virus to pigs and sheep by personnel in contact with infected pigs.

The most effective method of containing an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is by the culling of livestock. However, qualified people must diagnose the disease before the culling can begin, and they must avoid susceptible animals after having been in contact with infected premises, to prevent them from transmitting the virus. To test the effectiveness of biosecurity procedures in preventing the transmission of FMD virus (O/UK/35/2001) investigators contacted and sampled pigs inoculated with FMD virus for approximately 45 minutes and then contacted and sampled sentinel pigs and sheep af

The treatment of articular cartilage injuries with mesenchymal stem cells in different animal species.

One of the major problems observed in veterinary practice is articular cartilage injuries in animals. In terms of agriculture, it leads to their culling from the herd, even if they are highly productive animals. With companion animals, owners usually have to decide between euthanasia or long-term sometimes lifelong treatment of the injury by a veterinarian. The use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for the treatment of cartilage injury in veterinary medicine is based on the good results observed in preclinical studies, where large animals have been used as experimental models to study the regen

Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus, United Kingdom.

During February 2018-January 2019, we conducted large-scale surveillance for the presence and prevalence of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) and louping ill virus (LIV) in sentinel animals and ticks in the United Kingdom. Serum was collected from 1,309 deer culled across England and Scotland. Overall, 4% of samples were ELISA-positive for the TBEV serocomplex. A focus in the Thetford Forest area had the highest proportion (47.7%) of seropositive samples. Ticks collected from culled deer within seropositive regions were tested for viral RNA; 5 of 2,041 ticks tested positive by LIV/TBEV real
