Electronic animal identification for controlling feed delivery and detecting estrus in gilts and sows in outside pens.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of delivering feed and detecting estrous behavior by computer-controlled equipment in a nonconfinement environment. In Exp. 1, gilts were assigned to treatment when detected pregnant by ultrasound at 30 to 35 d after artificial insemination. They were assigned to be fed individually in stalls once/day (0830) with a scoop (controls, n = 20) or with an electronic sow feeding station (ESF, n = 20). The ESF gilts received their feed in 98.6-g aliquots at 80-s intervals as they visited the feeding station. Control vs ESF gilts did n

Genotoxicity and sub-chronic oral toxicity of a blend of bacteriophage for animal feeds.

Bacteriophage (phage) are naturally occurring viruses which infect bacteria. They exhibit high host specificity and can be used to selectively control bacterial pathogens. Phage offer the potential of reducing pathogen contamination directly in foods or in feeds for livestock, thereby lowering the likelihood of infectious pathogens entering the food chain. A preparation consisting of a blend of phages targeting Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli strains and Clostridium perfringens has been created for application in animal feeds. A series of GLP-compliant studies was carried out to help establi

Impacts of the feed contaminant deoxynivalenol on the intestine of monogastric animals: poultry and swine.

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is one of the most prevalent cereal contaminants with major public health concerns owing to its high toxigenic potentials. Once ingested, DON first and foremost targets epithelial cells of the gastrointestinal tract, whose proper functioning, as the first line of defence, is of paramount importance for the host's health. Emerging evidences, summarized in this article, suggest that DON produces its toxicity primarily via activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) signalling pathway and alteration in the expression of genes responsible for key physiological

Concentration of trace elements in blood and feed of homebred animals in Southern Serbia.

BACKGROUND, AIM AND SCOPE: The paper presents concentrations of trace elements in blood of homebred animals (cows and sheep) from Southern Serbia (Bujanovac) and the contents of natural and anthropogenic radionuclides and some heavy metals in feed. The region of Southern Serbia was exposed to contamination by depleted uranium ammunition during NATO attacks in 1999 and therefore, is of great concern to environmental pollution and human and animal health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Conventional instrumental and epithermal neutron activation analyses are used to measure trace elements in cow and she

[Problems in the energy and nutritional requirements of feeding and welfare of food producing animals].

The efforts in optimizing feeding conditions of food producing animals in the past were focussed primarily on promoting performance and/or the products' quality (MEYER 1997). In spite of great success in this direction various risks occur due to the conflict between the increased requirements on the one hand and the species typical demands on the other (for example: need of roughage as well as of concentrates with high energy and nutrient density in ruminants). Especially in feeding high yielding dairy cows the conflict is obvious: Even in the case, that high amounts of concentrates are fed it

Generation of Virus-Infected Ticks: Synchronous Infection and Feeding on Viremic Animals.

Although many hematophagous arthropods transmit pathogens to humans and animals, Ixodid ticks are unique in that the feeding process lasts for days to weeks instead of a few minutes. To facilitate feeding, tick saliva suppresses host responses, which would permit detection and removal and has been shown to impact disease transmission and severity. Using infected ticks to transmit the virus to a host, the resulting disease course and pathology should resemble naturally occurring cases more closely than simply injecting the virus through a needle. In this work, we describe methods to generate vi

Evaluation of animal feeds for the presence of three important antibiotic classes in Bhutan.

OBJECTIVES: An alarming rate of emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) globally has urged Bhutan to take firm steps towards antibiotic stewardship through rational use in humans, animals and agriculture. This study aimed to investigate the use of three important antibiotic classes in animal feeds in Bhutan. METHODS: Thirteen samples were selected randomly from a pool of feed samples submitted by bidders for Annual Animal Feed Tender (fiscal year 2015-2016) of the Department of Livestock. The 13 samples were tested for nitrofurans and their metabolites, tetracyclines and sulphonamides. Th

Health effects of airborne exposures from concentrated animal feeding operations.

Toxic gases, vapors, and particles are emitted from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) into the general environment. These include ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, malodorous vapors, and particles contaminated with a wide range of microorganisms. Little is known about the health risks of exposure to these agents for people living in the surrounding areas. Malodor is one of the predominant concerns, and there is evidence that psychophysiologic changes may occur as a result of exposure to malodorous compounds. There is a paucity of data regarding community adverse health ef

Negative Effects of Occurrence of Mycotoxins in Animal Feed and Biological Methods of Their Detoxification: A Review.

Secondary metabolic products of molds, called mycotoxins, negatively affect animal health and production. They constitute a significant problem in veterinary and medical sciences, and their presence has been confirmed in feed all over the world. Applying appropriate agricultural practices and ensuring proper storage conditions significantly reduces the contamination of agricultural products with mycotoxins. However, this does not guarantee that raw materials are completely free from contamination. Many detoxification methods are currently used, but their insufficient effectiveness and negative

Unexpected Cu and Zn speciation patterns in the broiler feed-animal-excreta system revealed by XAS spectroscopy.

Trace minerals such as copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) are animal nutrition supplements necessary for livestock health and breeding performance, yet they also have environmental impacts via animal excretion. Here we investigated changes in Cu and Zn speciation from the feed additive to the broiler excreta stages. The aim of this study was to assess whether different Cu and Zn feed additives induce different Cu and Zn speciation patterns, and to determine the extent to which this speciation is preserved throughout the feed-animal-excreta system. Characterization and genetic variability of feed-borne and clinical animal/human Aspergillus fumigatus strains using molecular markers.

Aspergillus fumigatus, the major etiological agent of human and animal aspergillosis, is a toxigenic fungus largely regarded as a single species by macroscopic and microscopic features. However, molecular studies have demonstrated that several morphologically identified A. fumigatus strains might be genetically distinct. This work was aimed to apply PCR-restriction length fragment polymorphisms (PCR-RFLP) and random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) molecular markers to characterize a set of feed-borne and clinical A. fumigatus sensu lato strains isolated from Argentina and Brazil and to

[Animal nutrition for veterinarians--recent cases of clinical disorders in horses after intake of ionophore-containing feed].

Anamnesis and clinical signs of horses form five different stables after ingestion of ionophores are reported and techniques of feed examination are described. Within a few hours or days after feeding of new types or batches of concentrates horses fell ill. They showed colic-like symptoms with intense sweating and ataxia. Most of the sick animals died within a short time span. Samples of the concentrates were analysed and different types and amounts of ionophores were detected. In four cases contamination by monensin in concentrations of less than 5 mg to 679 mg/kg feed were found. One feed sa

A comparison between solid phase extraction and supercritical fluid extraction for the determination of fluconazole from animal feed.

The application of supercritical fluid extraction with carbon dioxide and modified carbon dioxide for the determination of fluconazole from an animal feed was studied. A fractional factorial design approach was used to examine the significant experimental variables for quantitative extraction of fluconazole. Gas chromatography with either flame ionisation or mass selective detection was used for quantitation of the extracts. The results indicated that modifier (methanol) had the greatest effect on the recovery of fluconazole from the animal feed.

[Allergic contact dermatitis: the evaluation of positivity in skin tests in the workers of an animal feed plant].

Patch tests were performed on 43 workers employed in an animal fodder plant, a typical dust-laden environment. The aim of the study was to establish and assess the incidence of preclinical sensitization to the substances used, some of which are well known allergens, and identify which of these were mostly responsible. On the whole, the tests did not reveal any major reaction to the allergens used, nor polysensitization. However, an unexpected number of cases was sensitized to phenothiazine, a substance that had not been use for the preceding two years. This observation is of interest since phe
