Food-derived extracellular vesicles modulate ferroptosis: Implications for functional food development and healthy aging.

Food-derived extracellular vesicles (FDEVs) from plant, dairy, and microbial sources are emerging as bioactive nanostructures with increasing relevance to food science, nutrition, and functional food design. This review summarizes current knowledge on the occurrence of FDEVs in foods, source-dependent isolation and purification strategies, physicochemical characterization, bioavailability, and stability during processing and storage, with an emphasis on how these features shape their potential to modulate ferroptosis. Available evidence suggests that FDEVs may influence iron homeostasis, lipid

Maternal Nutrition, Toxicants, and Epigenetic Programming of Obesity Across Generations.

BACKGROUND: The developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) framework highlights the importance of the intrauterine environment in shaping lifelong health outcomes. Maternal nutrition, toxic exposures, and epigenetic reprogramming are key factors influencing offspring susceptibility to obesity and cardiometabolic disorders. However, prior reviews have typically addressed nutrition and toxicants separately, limiting insights into their combined effects on the fetal epigenome. This review integrates current evidence on how maternal nutrition and toxicant exposures converge through epigen

Effect of fertilizing on the productivity of pregnant and lactating queens, growth and development of their offspring.

An urgent problem in the agricultural science of livestock production is the adequate feeding of the queens of farm animals, in particular sheep kept on year-round pasture, especially in the second half of pregnancy and the first half of lactation. These periods are the most stressful, since the uterus does not receive enough necessary nutrients for the normal functioning of the body, embryonic and post-embryonic development of the offspring. In this regard, the purpose of our research was to increase the usefulness of the diet queens by carrying out additional feeding crushed barley with the

Nano/microencapsulation of feed additives for ruminal microbiome modulation and enteric methane mitigation in ruminants: a critical review.

The latest advances in nutrition, microbiology, and omics sciences are redefining strategies to improve health indices and productivity in livestock. A novel strategy focuses on the deliberate modulation of rumen and intestinal microbiome ecosystems, which, besides being complex, are crucial for animal performance. The use of feed additives, such as bioactive compounds derived from plants and probiotics, has a long tradition supported by their known antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, among others. However, their practical efficacy is often compromised by their high s

Fructose and metabolic diseases: new findings, new questions.

There has been much concern regarding the role of dietary fructose in the development of metabolic diseases. This concern arises from the continuous increase in fructose (and total added caloric sweeteners consumption) in recent decades, and from the increased use of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) as a sweetener. A large body of evidence shows that a high-fructose diet leads to the development of obesity, diabetes, and dyslipidemia in rodents. In humans, fructose has long been known to increase plasma triglyceride concentrations. In addition, when ingested in large amounts as part of a hyperc

A regression-based statistical framework for continuous nutritional inputs in poultry nutrition studies: beyond ANOVA.

Nutritional studies in animal science frequently evaluate graded dietary inclusion levels using one-way ANOVA followed by multiple mean comparison procedures, despite the fact that dietary inputs are inherently continuous variables rather than independent categorical treatments. This widespread analytical practice limits biological interpretation, reduces statistical power, obscures dose-response dynamics, and prevents estimation of optimal nutrient inclusion levels. The present study proposes a standardized regression-based analytical protocol for animal nutritional experiments involving cont

Nutraceuticals for the Management of Cardiovascular Health: A Mechanistic and Evidence-Based Review Focusing on Atherosclerosis and Hypertension.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) constitute one of the leading global health burdens, accounting for nearly 50% of all deaths worldwide. Rapid urbanization, lifestyle transitions, psychosocial stress, socioeconomic factors, and changing dietary patterns significantly influence cardiovascular health. Among modifiable risk determinants, atherosclerosis (AS) and hypertension (HTN) are the most critical, interrelated contributors to the onset and progression of CVDs. Nutritional interventions have gained significant global recognition in public health science and clinical practice and are widely reg

Daily milk intake improves vitamin B-12 status in young vegetarian Indians: an intervention trial.

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic Indian lacto vegetarians, who make up more than half of the Indian population in different geographic regions, have distinctly low vitamin B-12 concentrations than non- vegetarians. Vegetarians consume milk but it seems that the amount is not enough to improve vitamin B-12 status or vitamin B-12 concentration in milk itself may be low. The aim of this study was to determine if daily milk consumption can improve vitamin B-12 status. METHODS: Fifteen male and 36 female, young healthy post-graduate volunteers participated. Blood from ten participants (4 males and 6 femal

Role of environmental factors in the timing of puberty.

Puberty-timing measures have historically been used as indicators of adequate nutrition and growth. More recently, these measures have been examined in relation to exposure to estrogenic or antiandrogenic agents, as well as other environmental factors. The scientific community has debated whether puberty timing is occurring earlier today than in the mid-1900s in the United States and, if so, whether environmental factors play a role; however, no one has asked a multidisciplinary panel to resolve this question. Thus, a multidisciplinary expert panel jointly sponsored by the US Environmental Pro

The role of one-carbon metabolism and homocysteine in Parkinson's disease onset, pathology and mechanisms.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. It is characterised by the progressive degeneration of dopaminergic (DA) neurons. The cause of degeneration is not well understood; however, both genetics and environmental factors, such as nutrition, have been implicated in the disease process. Deficiencies in one-carbon metabolism in particular have been associated with increased risk for PD onset and progression, though the precise relationship is unclear. The aim of the present review is to determine the role of one-carbon metabolism and elevated levels of homoc

Plant-Based Dairy Alternatives-A Future Direction to the Milky Way.

One significant food group that is part of our daily diet is the dairy group, and both research and industry are actively involved to meet the increasing requirement for plant-based dairy alternatives (PBDAs). The production tendency of PBDAs is growing with a predictable rate of over 18.5% in 2023 from 7.4% at the moment. A multitude of sources can be used for development such as cereals, pseudocereals, legumes, nuts, and seeds to obtain food products such as vegetal milk, cheese, cream, yogurt, butter, and different sweets, such as ice cream, which have nearly similar nutritional profiles to

[Food Ingredients and Hygiene: Exploring the Functions of Food Ingredients Through Hygiene Studies].

Hygiene is a field of study that aims to "protect health" and "protect lifestyle" of people from external factors such as bacteria, poor nutrition, and toxic chemicals, as well as internal factors such as lifestyle and stress. In the early days of hygiene science in Japan, the results of nutritional epidemiology research by Dr. Kanehiro Takaki, a naval doctor who studied medicine in Kagoshima, on the prevention of beriberi, a national disease at the time, were highly regarded internationally. Since then, hygiene research on food ingredients has been vigorously pursued to expand from basic rese
