West Nile virus (WNV; Flaviviridae: Flavivirus) is a widely distributed arthropod-borne virus that has negatively affected human health and animal populations. WNV infection rates of mosquitoes and human cases have been shown to be correlated with climate. However, previous studies have been conducted at a variety of spatial and temporal scales, and the scale-dependence of these relationships has been understudied. We tested the hypothesis that climate variables are important to understand these relationships at all spatial scales. We analyzed the influence of climate on WNV infection rate of

Neurons are often modelled as immobile systems that transmit information through chemical and electrical signals constrained by noise and bandwidth. However, this static view contrasts with biological reality, in which dynamical processes operate across scales, from whole-animal movements to motion at the subcellular level. Here, we combine recent experimental observations with biophysically realistic modelling to show that neural information processing, beyond electrochemical signalling, is dynamically shaped by motion, from morphodynamic ultrastructural changes to whole-body movements. In th

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Reduction in infarct volume is the standard measure of therapeutic success in animal stroke models. Reduction in infarct volume has been advocated as a biological surrogate or auxiliary outcome measure for human stroke clinical trials to replace or supplement deficit, disability, and global clinical scales. However, few studies have investigated correlations between infarct volume and clinical end points in acute ischemic stroke patients.
METHODS: CT scans at days 6 to 11 were acquired prospectively in 191 fully eligible patients enrolled in the Randomized Trial of Tir

Graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), a frequent and severe complication following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, presents substantial morbidity and mortality risks. The crucial role of histopathological examination in diagnosing and grading GvHD, particularly within animal models, is pivotal for elucidating disease mechanisms and assessing emerging therapies. This systematic review aims to critically evaluate the various grading systems for GvHD in animal models, emphasizing histopathological characteristics. In this endeavor, we meticulously examined original research articl

With the rapid development of livestock and poultry breeding industries, pollution problems caused by the discharge of animal feces have become increasingly severe. Nevertheless, there are limited investigations about nutrients and pollutants in animal feces from different scale of farms, especially in Northwest China. Here we investigated nutrients content, 19 antibiotics, 7 heavy metals, 329 antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and 35 mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in six main livestock and poultry feces collected from 5 coastal regions of Ningxia. Pig and chicken feces exhibited higher levels

Animal societies are organized across scales, from moment-to-moment actions of individuals to dynamic group structure. A central challenge in sociobiology is to understand how behaviors of individuals shape group structure. Here, using machine vision to map recurrent fine-scale behavioral modules in the eusocial naked mole-rat ( Heterocephalus glaber ), we show that spontaneous behavior in isolation predicts group-level social organization, including colony membership and individual identity. We determined dominance relationships and found highly linear hierarchies, with ranks stable over mont

Pain assessment in domestic animals has gained importance in recent years due to the recognition of the physiological, behavioral, and endocrine consequences of acute pain on animal production, welfare, and animal model validity. Current approaches to identifying acute pain mainly rely on behavioral-based scales, quantifying pain-related biomarkers, and the use of devices monitoring sympathetic activity. Infrared thermography is an alternative that could be used to correlate the changes in the superficial temperature with other tools and thus be an additional or alternate acute pain assessment

Tinea corporis and the tinea pedis model in guinea pig with Trichophyton mentagrophytes are well established models of dermatophytoses. We attempted to provide animal infection models for T. tonsurans, endemic in Japan, and Malassezia restricta, an important pathogenic factor in seborrhoeic dermatitis, by utilizing the tinea corporis model. An inoculum of the organisms was applied to the back skin of male guinea pigs. T. tonsurans infected animals showed follicular inflammation mimicking those seen in humans. Interestingly, anthropophilic T. tonsurans showed a high infection rate in animal ski

In gekkonids, the scales bordering the toes or the adjacent tissue possess suberpidermal and intraepithelial receptors in addition to setae-bearing organs. The position of subepidermal lamellated corpuscles seems to be correlated with the size of the species. The larger the adult animal the more frequently is this type of receptor found laterally in the toe. This can be explained in connection with the vibration-sensitive function of lamellated receptors. Intraepithelial axon terminals were found close to the setae-bearing sensilla in one species only. They are surrounded by numerous tonofibri

Current consumption of animal-based protein sources is environmentally unsustainable and poses risks to human health, animal welfare, and food security. Policymakers in many countries seek to reduce the consumption of animal-based protein sources. However, this transition is affected by many factors, and it remains unclear how they interact and what their potential is for stimulating systemic change. This study synthesized stakeholders' perspectives on factors driving the consumption of animal- and plant-based protein sources into a Causal Loop Diagram (CLD), visualiing factors and their cause

An estimated 15% of animals are venomous, with representatives spread across the majority of animal lineages. Animals use venoms for various purposes, such as prey capture and predator deterrence. Humans have always been fascinated by venomous animals in a Janus-faced way. On the one hand, humans have a deeply rooted fear of venomous animals. This is boosted by their largely negative image in public media and the fact that snakes alone cause an annual global death toll in the hundreds of thousands, with even more people being left disabled or disfigured. Consequently, snake envenomation has re

Chrysosporium species are saprophytic filamentous fungi commonly found in the soil, dung, and animal fur. Subcutaneous infection caused by this organism is rare in humans. We report a case of subcutaneous fungal infection caused by Chrysosporium keratinophilum in a 38-year-old woman. The patient presented with severe chromoblastomycosis-like lesions on the left side of the jaw and neck for 6 years. She also got tinea corporis on her trunk since she was 10 years old. Chrysosporium keratinophilum was isolated from the tissue on the neck and scales on the trunk, respectively. The patient showed s

Stimulation of peripheral cranial nerves has been shown to exert anticonvulsant effects in animal models as well as in human patients. Specifically, stimulation of both the trigeminal and vagus nerves has been shown in multiple clinical trials to be anticonvulsant, and stimulation of these nerves at therapeutic levels does not cause pain or negatively affect brain function. However, the neuronal mechanisms by which such stimulation exerts therapeutic effects are not well understood. In this review, the possible locations of action for trigeminal nerve stimulation (TNS) and vagus nerve stimulat

Leptospirosis is a global zoonotic disease that the transmission is driven by complex geographical and temporal variation in demographics, animal hosts and socioecological factors. This results in complex challenges for the identification of high-risk areas. Spatial and temporal epidemiological tools could be used to support leptospirosis control programs, but the adequacy of its application has not been evaluated. We searched literature in six databases including PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Scopus, SciELO and Zoological Record to systematically review and critically assess the use of spat

INTRODUCTION: Grassland-livestock balance is an important principle of sustainable development of grassland livestock production and grassland ecosystem health. Grassland degradation becomes more serious at global scales and especially at the area that is sensitive to climate change and human activities. Decreases in pasture biomass and shifts in plant community composition in degraded grasslands can largely affect grazing behaviors of livestock. Up to date, however, it is unclear that whether livestock behaviors change across spatial and temporal scales and what key factors are to shape obser

Understanding how events at the molecular and cellular scales contribute to tissue form and function is key to uncovering the mechanisms driving animal development, physiology and disease. Elucidating these mechanisms has been enhanced through the study of model organisms and the use of sophisticated genetic, biochemical and imaging tools. Here, we present an accessible method for non-invasive imaging of Drosophila melanogaster at high resolution using micro-computed tomography (µ-CT). We show how rapid processing of intact animals, at any developmental stage, provides precise quantitative ass

Anthrax is a potentially life-threatening bacterial disease that can spread between wild and livestock animals and humans. Transmission typically occurs indirectly via environmental exposure, with devastating consequences for human and animal health, as well as pastoralist economies. India has a high annual occurrence of anthrax in some regions, but a country-wide delineation of risk has not yet been undertaken. The current study modelled the geographical suitability of anthrax across India and its associated environmental features using a biogeographic application of machine learning. Both bi

The challenge of measuring pain in veterinary medicine is compounded by the lack of fully validated, reliable methods to measure and assess pain in nonverbal patients. In human medicine, there are numerous, validated pain assessment tools (PATs) for assessing various, specific types of pain. The advances in human medicine pain management and numerous validated pain scales should serve as incentives and templates to facilitate similar advances in the development of validated PATs for use in dogs (and other species). The limited number of canine PATs constrains our ability to adequately and reli

CONTEXT: Linking individual movements to population-level distributions remains a central challenge in ecology. Animal distributions arise from interdependent movement decisions across spatiotemporal scales. However, most studies focus on a single scale or treat them in isolation, constraining our ability to uncover the mechanisms shaping landscape-level patterns.
OBJECTIVES: We evaluated whether hierarchical foraging decisions operating across nested scales can be recovered from movement data alone. Specifically, we tested whether multi-state step-selection functions (HMM-SSFs) can identify
