Implementation and evaluation of a strategic parasite control program for captive exotic ungulates.

A parasite control program was designed for greater than 1,200 exotic ungulates maintained in mixed-species enclosures at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. Three strategically-timed anthelmintic treatments were given during 1988-1989, and their success was evaluated by monitoring pretreatment and posttreatment fecal egg counts. Adequate parasite control was achieved for animals in 52 ungulate species, as evidenced by low pretreatment egg counts and the absence of egg-shedding after treatment. However, animals belonging to 11 species in the subfamilies Antilopinae, Hippotraginae, and Caprinae wer

Updates in Pet Reptile Infectious Diseases.

The field of reptile infectious disease epidemiology continues to grow and evolve, revealing a diverse variety of viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Many of these organisms go beyond being opportunistic agents and serve as true obligate pathogens, with some being responsible for mortality events worldwide. Our knowledge about their classification, diagnosis, treatment, and management is continually being updated, so it is imperative for veterinarians working with reptiles to remain vigilant. Ultimately, our success with captive reptiles requires us to continue to refine our understanding

Exotic pets are new allergenic sources: allergy to iguana.

Although furry animals are known sources of respiratory allergy, scaly animals are assumed not to be allergenic. Exotic animals such as iguanas are becoming increasingly common pets. Nevertheless, these animals are not suspected to be allergenic. We present the case of a 42-year-old woman suffering from allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma caused by a pet iguana. Clear IgE-sensitization and respiratory allergy to iguana scales is demonstrated, suggesting that scaly pets should be taken into account as possible allergenic sources.

Pulmonary histiocytic sarcoma with cranial mediastinal involvement in a Brazilian red-rumped agouti.

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS)-an aggressive hematopoietic malignancy originating from dendritic cells or cells of the macrophage lineage with gross and histologic features that overlap with other neoplasms in laboratory rodents-is a diagnostic challenge in exotic species. HS has not been reported previously in the Brazilian red-rumped agouti (Dasyprocta leporina), to our knowledge. Here, we describe a case of an agouti in which the primary differential diagnosis, based on its location and gross appearance, was chemodectoma. Although the mass grossly resembled a neuroendocrine tumor, histologic and

Exotic pulmonary infections.

Pulmonary infections are the commonest type of illnesses seen in everyday practice. Although most infections are caused by a few familiar pathogens, an increase in global travel has led to the occurrence of rare and exotic diseases that often do not manifest until after the traveller returns home. Previously innocuous organisms may also be the cause of exotic infections in patients undergoing transplantation, or very aggressive immunosupression. Such treatment regimes may reactivate quiescent organisms acquired years previously, for example melioidosis and strongyloides stercoralis. In most de

Invasive species and their parasites: eastern cottontail rabbit Sylvilagus floridanus and Trichostrongylus affinis (Graybill, 1924) from Northwestern Italy.

The eastern cottontail Sylvilagus floridanus is a native American lagomorph. Within the genus Sylvilagus, the eastern cottontail is the species with the widest distribution. From 1950s, the species was introduced to several European countries. A rapid territorial expansion of the introduced eastern cottontails has been observed in many areas of Italy. The eastern cottontail has been demonstrated to play a main role as carrier of exotic parasites. To date, three nematode species, exotic in Italian ecosystems, have been reported from introduced S. floridanus. However, its parasite fauna biodiver

Survey of the prevalence, diagnosis and treatment of dermatological conditions in small animals in general practice.

A survey was made of the prevalence, diagnosis and treatment of dermatological conditions in small animals in general practice in the UK. Out of 3707 small animal consultations in general practice that were observed and recorded, 795 (21.4 per cent) involved animals that had a dermatological problem. In dogs and exotic species, pruritus was the most common presenting sign, accounting for 30 to 40 per cent of the dermatological consultations. In cats, cutaneous swellings were the most common presentation (36 per cent). A diagnosis or recommendation for treatment was made on the basis of the pre

Exotic small mammals as potential reservoirs of zoonotic Bartonella spp.

To evaluate the risk for emerging human infections caused by zoonotic Bartonella spp. from exotic small mammals, we investigated the prevalence of Bartonella spp. in 546 small mammals (28 species) that had been imported into Japan as pets from Asia, North America, Europe, and the Middle and Near East. We obtained 407 Bartonella isolates and characterized them by molecular phylogenetic analysis of the citrate synthase gene, gltA. The animals examined carried 4 zoonotic Bartonella spp. that cause human endocarditis and neuroretinitis and 6 novel Bartonella spp. at a high prevalence (26.0%, 142/5

Coproparasitologic survey of gastrointestinal parasites in a captive leopard geckos collection (Eublepharis macularius).

An increase in exotic animal imports has been noticed in the last decades worldwide. In this scenario, reptiles represent a quite popular group of interest as exotic pets. However, they can harbor pathogens that under inadequate captivity conditions can lead to disease expression and sometimes death. This study performed coprological analysis to investigate gastrointestinal parasites in a private collection of leopard geckos (E. macularius) relating the results with husbandry practices. Twenty-three geckos of 1 to 5 years, weighing 30-65 g, of both sexes were used. Freshly voided fecal samples

Selection of points for regional anesthesia of the trigeminal nerve and its branches in red pandas (Ailurus fulgens fulgens).

The primary goal of regional anesthesia in exotic animals is to alleviate postoperative pain. It also enables a painless surgery and stands a safer option for surgeries than general anesthesia. Due to the varying anatomy of the head among different species of exotic mammals, anesthesia techniques can differ significantly. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the topography of each species individually. This study describes the location of the cranial foramina associated with the trigeminal nerve, the topography of the surrounding bony structures (Table 1) and soft tissues in three red pandas

Reptile trade and chelonians-associated Salmonellosis in humans: A public health concern.

Animal trade has become a serious criminal practice in the world. Every day thousands of exotic wild animals, including reptiles, are farmed and sold worldwide. The illegal collection of turtles and tortoises remains completely unsupervised and represents a big challenge for responsible authorities. This has consequences for animals and public health because it can contribute to the spread of multiple zoonotic pathogens by introducing exotic species into new geographical areas like wet markets, pet shops, and houses. Non-typhoidal Salmonella are bacteria that can commonly cause self-limiting g

When the pregnant patient has tusks, claws, or hooves: a case report.

While obstetric anesthesia for humans and domesticated species is well-described, "exotic" species present unique physiological and logistical challenges. Zoological veterinarians are faced with a lack of species-specific information, necessitating extrapolation of anesthetic knowledge and expertise from related species. The North Sulawesi babirusa (Babyrousa babyrussa celebensis) is a vulnerable tusked pig with limited existing literature regarding its anesthetic or surgical management. Here we describe the successful cesarean delivery of two babirusa piglets after signs of challenging labor.

Cardiovascular Drugs in Avian, Small Mammal, and Reptile Medicine.

Cardiovascular disease, including congestive heart failure, pericardial disease, and atherosclerosis, is becoming increasingly better recognized in companion birds, small mammals, and reptiles. A wide range of medications is available to treat these conditions, including diuretics, vasodilators, positive and negative inotropes, antiarrhythmic agents, and pentoxifylline. This review systematically discusses each of these drug classes and their potential applications in exotic species. Although treatment approaches remain largely empirical and extrapolated from small animal and human medicine, t

[Anesthesia in domestic animals (small mammals, psittacines and reptiles)].

The presentation of small animals and exotic pets (birds, reptiles) in veterinary practice is increasing. Physiological and ethological variations demand specific precautions in restraining/ anesthetizing these patients. In Psittacines hypoglycemia, hypoxia and hypothermia are typical side-effects. Long-acting recovery control in birds and reptiles is necessary.

Isolation and propagation of an Egyptian Theileria annulata infected cell line and evaluation of its use as a vaccine to protect cattle against field challenge.

Tropical theileriosis is an important protozoan tick-borne disease in cattle. Vaccination using attenuated schizont-infected cell lines is one of the methods used for controlling the disease. This study describes the production of attenuated schizont-infected cell lines from Egypt and an evaluation of its use as a vaccine to protect calves against clinical disease upon field challenge. Two groups of exotic and crossbred male calves were divided into vaccinated and control groups. The vaccinated groups were inoculated with 4 ml (1 × 106 cells/ml) of the attenuated cell line. Three weeks after v

Predominant Non-Traditional or "Exotic" Pet Species and Affected Body Systems and Sense Organs at a Veterinary Referral Center: An Eleven-Year Retrospective Study.

This study characterized the non-traditional or "exotic" pets most frequently admitted to a referral center (Center for Medicine and Research in Wild Animals-CEMPAS) located in Botucatu, São Paulo state, Brazil, and identified the main reasons for admission according to affected body systems or sense organs. A retrospective review of medical records was performed over 11 years, and data were grouped into four vertebrate classes: reptiles, mammals, amphibians, and birds. From 2014 to 2019, bird admissions exceeded mammals (p = 0.0001), whereas no significant difference was observed from 2020 to

Commissioned article: management of exotic snakebites.

Exotic (foreign or non-native) snakes, including venomous species, are becoming increasingly popular pets in Western countries. Some of them are kept illegally (as defined by the UK Dangerous Wild Animals Act of 1976). There is a large international market for such animals, with contraventions of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). In the UK, several other European countries and the USA the reported numbers of bites by venomous exotic snakes, although small, are increasing but still underestimate the occurrence of these occasionally fata

Video Otoscopy in Exotic Companion Mammals.

Ear disease is a common disorder seen in exotic companion mammals, especially in ferrets, rabbits, and rats. This article describes patient preparation, equipment, and video otoscopy technique in exotic companion mammals. This noninvasive technique facilitates accurate diagnosis of diseases affecting the external ear canal or middle ear. Moreover, therapeutic otoscopic evaluation of the external ear facilitates foreign body removal, external ear canal flushing, intralesional drug administration, myringotomy, and middle ear cavity flushing.
