Detection of pathogenic Listeria spp. in zoo animal faeces: use of immunomagnetic separation and a chromogenic isolation medium.

Faecal samples, collected from 200 healthy animals in Antwerp Zoo, were examined for the presence of pathogenic Listeria spp. A two-stage standard isolation (ISO) method was combined with immunomagnetic separation (IMS). ALOA agar, a chromogenic isolation medium, differentiating Listeria spp. on the basis of beta-glucosidase and phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PIPLC) activity, was compared with PALCAM agar. Confirmation of the isolates was based on conventional biochemical tests and a disc test, which detects a specific aminopeptidase produced by all Listeria spp. except Listeri

Prevalence, transmission, and host specificity of Cryptosporidium spp. in various animal groups from two French zoos.

Cryptosporidium represents a major cause of gastrointestinal illness in humans and animals including domestic, wild, and in captivity animals, and more than 30 validated species of Cryptosporidium are recognized as infectious to different hosts such as mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Therefore, numerous investigations have been conducted worldwide in order to shed light on the epidemiology of this parasite and to explore its potential reservoirs. Few surveys, targeting humans and animals have been carried out regarding the epidemiology of Cryptosporidium spp. in France and no d

A Sentinel Serological Study in Selected Zoo Animals to Assess Early Detection of West Nile and Usutu Virus Circulation in Slovenia.

Monitoring infectious diseases is a crucial part of preventive veterinary medicine in zoological collections. This zoo environment contains a great variety of animal species that are in contact with wildlife species as a potential source of infectious diseases. Wild birds may be a source of West Nile virus (WNV) and Usutu (USUV) virus, which are both emerging pathogens of rising concern. The aim of this study was to use zoo animals as sentinels for the early detection of WNV and USUV in Slovenia. In total, 501 sera from 261 animals of 84 animal species (including birds, rodents, lagomorphs, ca

Petting Zoo Perils: Escherichia coli O157:h7 Associated Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome Secondary to Animal Exposure.

Animal exhibits can be a source of E. coli O157:h7 transmission and may lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome. The E. coli O157:h7 outbreak in Tennessee affected over 64 children. Five children, 15 months to 7 years of age, developed acute renal failure due to HUS, requiring renal replacement therapy. They were admitted to the hospital with acute renal failure between 7 and 12 days after exposure to animals. All children presented with vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and oligo-anuria and had laboratory confirmation of E. coli O157:h7 in the stool sample. They all required renal replacement the

Molecular Epidemiology of Blastocystis sp. in Various Animal Groups from Two French Zoos and Evaluation of Potential Zoonotic Risk.

Blastocystis sp. is a common intestinal parasite infecting humans and a wide range of animals worldwide. It exhibits an extensive genetic diversity and 17 subtypes (STs) have thus far been identified in mammalian and avian hosts. Since several STs are common to humans and animals, it was proposed that a proportion of human infections may result from zoonotic transmission. However, the contribution of each animal source to human infection remains to be clarified. Therefore, the aim of this study was to expand our knowledge of the epidemiology and host specificity of this parasite by performing

SARS-CoV-2 Serological Surveillance of Both Vaccinated and Unvaccinated Zoo Animals with the Identification of a Sloth Bear and a Tapir with Previous Infection.

Since its discovery in 2019, SARS-CoV-2 has continued to be detected in both humans and animals worldwide. Currently there is limited research focusing on serological surveillance of wildlife under human care. Here we tested 230 serum samples of 134 animals from two zoological institutions collected between 2015 and 2024. To assess prior exposure and antibody responses from natural infection or vaccination, we used three serological assays: a nucleocapsid protein-based ELISA (N-ELISA), a surrogate virus neutralization test (sVNT) for spike (S) protein and a neutralization assay with S-pseudoty

Shedding of Clostridium difficile PCR ribotype 078 by zoo animals, and report of an unstable metronidazole-resistant isolate from a zebra foal (Equus quagga burchellii).

Clostridium difficile is an emerging and potentially zoonotic pathogen, but its prevalence in most animal species, including exhibition animals, is currently unknown. In this study we assessed the prevalence of faecal shedding of C. difficile by zoo animals, and determined the ribotype, toxin profile and antimicrobial susceptibility of recovered isolates. A total of 200 samples from 40 animal species (36.5% of which came from plains zebra, Equus quagga burchellii) were analysed. C. difficile was isolated from 7 samples (3.5% of total), which came from the following animal species: chimpanzee (

Wildlife Sentinel: Development of Multispecies Protein A-ELISA for Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies in Zoo Animals as a Proof of Concept for Wildlife Surveillance.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), first emerged in Wuhan in 2019 and rapidly spread worldwide. During the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous reports highlighted infections of wild animals by SARS-CoV-2. Nevertheless, further research is required to understand the virus potential to infect various animal species, which is crucial for evaluating its future evolution and the potential reemergence of SARS-CoV-2. The total concentration of immunoglobulin G (IgG) represents a valuable yet underused diagnostic param

Animal petting zoos as sources of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli, Salmonella and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae.

Animal petting zoos and farm fairs provide the opportunity for children and adults to interact with animals, but contact with animals carries a risk of exposure to zoonotic pathogens and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), Salmonella, extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in animal faeces from six animal petting zoos and one farm fair in Switzerland. Furthermore, hygiene facilities on the venues were evaluated. Of

Adjusting Our Thinking About Feeding Animals: Fiber as the Metric for Mimicking Natural Diets.

Free-ranging animals often ingest markedly different diets than their counterparts under human care, whether companion animals, production animals, or zoo animals. A nutrient with a prominent lack in the diet under human care across species is fiber. Dietary fibers are more difficult to digest than other nutrients and require microbial fermentation, typically resulting in an overall reduction of digestibility and metabolic efficiency. Nevertheless, or therefore, dietary fiber supports health, as it fosters a healthy gut microbiome and limits the risk of obesity and its comorbidities. And due t

First incidence of ectoparasites in Abuja Zoological Parks, Abuja, Nigeria.

Ectoparasites are known for representing a considerable health risk to animals and humans when living close to each other. Little is known about the ectoparasites of Zoo animals in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. This research was conducted from December, 2017 to April, 2018. Thirty-three animals were examined from two Zoological Gardens in Abuja (The National Children's Park and Zoo, Asokoro and the Area 1 Zoo and Garden, Garki). Mites were collected from animals by two techniques; brushing and removal with forceps. All body parts were examined. Ticks were collected using tweezers

Caring for your creatures: Ram Brahma Sanyal and the Calcutta Zoo.

In 1892, Ram Brahma Sanyal (1850-1908), superintendent of the Calcutta Zoological Gardens (CZG), published A Handbook on the Management of Animals in Captivity in Lower Bengal, securing him international renown. This article will ask how a 'native of India', subjected to the racial hierarchies of the British Empire, became a crucial reference in the global debate on zoo animal husbandry. How did a seemingly peripheral zoo such as the CZG become the site of extensive knowledge production on the nutrition, husbandry and veterinary care of captive animals? Sanyal's subordinated position at the zo
