Influence of frenotomy on breastfeeding in newborns with ankyloglossia.

PURPOSE: evaluate the influence of frenotomy on the breastfeeding of newborns diagnosed with ankyloglossia. METHODS: this is an intervention study performed with 50 newborns diagnosed with ankyloglossia. It was conducted in three stages: diagnosis, intervention and reassessment. In the diagnostic phase, the Protocol for the Assessment of Speech Language with Scores for Babies was applied to diagnose ankyloglossia and a questionnaire assessing the symptoms and coordination of sucking, swallowing and breathing during breastfeeding. In the intervention, frenotomy was performed, and at reassessme

Ankyloglossia and the Breastfeeding Infant: Assessment and Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Our current culture defines breastfeeding and the use of human breast milk as the preferred criterion standard for infant nutrition. Medical and health professionals have a responsibility to support breastfeeding in the mother-infant dyad. This includes the recognition of anatomical barriers to breastfeeding such as a tongue-tie, ankyloglossia. PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to enrich and expand the clinical knowledge of health professionals about the physical assessment of ankyloglossia and its impact on breastfeeding. Techniques for assessing anterior and posterior anky

[Diagnosis and management of ankyloglossia in young children].

Ankyloglossia is a common condition. Its prevalence is between 3.2% and 4.8% depending on the series and is largely underestimated given the fact of non-diagnosis when the symptoms are limited. It is defined as a short lingual frenulum resulting in a limitation of the lingual mobility. It is due to a defect in cellular apoptosis embryogenesis between the floor of the mouth and tongue. The result is a fibrous and short lingual frenulum. Several classifications were used to make the diagnosis. However, these are the clinical implications, particularly on food and primarily breastfeeding in the b

Skeletal and dental characteristics in subjects with ankyloglossia.

BACKGROUND: The role of ankyloglossia in etiology of malocclusion is not much discussed over the years. The aim of the present study was to assess the skeletal and dental characteristics in subjects with ankyloglossia. METHODS: Fifty-seven subjects diagnosed with ankyloglossia (group 1) were compared with 60 subjects (group 2) without ankyloglossia, who had class I skeletal base. Ankyloglossia was diagnosed and graded (mild, moderate, severe and very severe) using Kortlow's method. [Tongue mobility in ankyloglossia with regard to articulation].

A sound is created as a result of several breathing, phonetic and articulation positions and movements which take place in the articulation system consisting of both mobile and immobile elements. The tongue is one of the mobile elements of the articulation system. Full range of tongue mobility is required to form sounds correctly. If mobility of the tongue is reduced, sounds may slightly, moderately or highly deviate from proper ones. Serious deviations in articulate structure of sounds (such as non-vibrating front part of the tongue in the /r/ phoneme) are easy to notice since they change pho

[A pathological consideration of ankyloglossia and lingual myoplasty].

Despite the curious role of tongue in the development of oro-facial structures the tongue remains as rather quiescent organ without bony skeleton. But it is said that neuro-muscular complex of tongue is important in the developmental and functional process. Ankyloglossia and macroglossia are occasionally implicated in the oral diseases. Many authors supposed that the ankyloglossia and macroglossia might produce various abnormal oro-facial growth, such as bimaxillary or mandibular protrusion and anterior open bite, etc. We have designed the classification of ankyloglossia by measuring the media

Macroglossia and ankyloglossia in Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.

Since the recognition of the Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome was first noted in 1963, the number of associated anomalies has vastly increased. The rate of appearance of this abnormality is 1 in 13,5000 births. This article presents a case that includes macroglossia and ankyloglossia along with a bifid uvula and a submucous cleft of the palate. A discussion of treatment follows.

Ankyloglossia, Syndactyly and Polydactyly in the Pediatric Patient.

Ankyloglossia is a congenital alteration in the development of the tongue characterized by the presence of a short or thick lingual frenulum, which leads to a limitation in its movements. There is an associative inconsistency between ankyloglossia and complications with breastfeeding, speech, swallowing, breathing, and the development of orofacial structures, and it is urgent to make more scientific research in this area. In the presence of polydactyly and syndactyly may be also present ankyloglossia. The purpose of this paper is to present two ankyloglossia cases with finger alterations, with

Dysfunctional suction dynamics in newborns with ankyloglossia.

PURPOSE: Compare infant suction in babies with and without ankyloglossia using a microprocessor-controlled pressure sensor coupled to a pacifier. METHODS: Fifty-five infants from 0 to 2 months of age underwent clinical examination for ankyloglossia, after which they were offered a silicone pacifier connected to the pressure acquisitiondevice and suction activity was recorded. Thus, we extracted the frequency of sucks within a burst, the average suck duration, the burst duration, the number of sucks per burst, the maximum amplitude of sucks per burst and the inter-burst interval. RESULTS: The

Familial Presentation of Ankyloglossia and Localized Periodontitis.

An association between ankyloglossia and periodontitis has not previously been reported. This case series describes three sisters who each had ankyloglossia and a molar/incisor pattern of localized periodontitis. The concurrent presentation of both conditions within the family suggests that further investigation of genetic factors that might concurrently affect the pathogenesis of both disorders may be warranted.

[Diagnosis and treatment of ankyloglossia in newborns and infants].

Ankyloglossia is a congenital condition characterized by a short lingual frenulum, which may result in the restriction of tongue movement and function. Considerable controversy regarding the diagnosis, clinical significance, and management of the condition remains, and great variations in practice have been recorded. Indeed, attitudes toward ankyloglossia differ among professional groups, and opinions may vary remarkably even among those within the same specialty. This article reviews the embryology, genetics, diagnosis, clinical presentation, and treatment of ankyloglossia to help physicians

Trends in outpatient intervention for pediatric ankyloglossia.

OBJECTIVES: Anecdotally, there has been an increase in ankyloglossia referrals and frenotomy procedures performed in recent years. Many studies have characterized frenotomy indications and outcomes, but none have quantified how the frequency of referrals and interventions have changed over time in the outpatient setting. This study analyzes temporal trends in the diagnosis and intervention of ankyloglossia in a pediatric otolaryngology practice to further clarify how patterns of management of this condition have changed over time. METHODS: This study was a retrospective chart review of patien
