Temporomandibular joint ankylosis: the Egyptian experience.

This is a review of 204 patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis treated according to a definitive protocol in the Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Department of the Alexandria University Hospital during the period 1990-1996 with a follow-up varying from 1.5 to 7 years. A history of trauma was confirmed in 98% of cases. Patients were grouped into: (1) Those with ankylosis not associated with facial deformities. The management involves release of the ankylosed joint(s) and reconstruction of the condyle ramus unit(s) (CRUs) using costochondral graft(s) (CCGs). (2) Those with mandibular ankylos

[Osteo-dental ankylosis of permanent teeth].

The Authors present a bone dental ankylosis study and two clinical cases. The Authors show literature data in relation to different pathogenetic hypothesis and their therapeutic programs. Considering Bda as an histologic diagnosis, they suggest that any treatment-resistant clinical case is a true Bda.

Infiltrating lipomatosis, an etiology for TMJ ankylosis?

Infiltrating lipomatosis is a rare benign condition causing diffuse fatty infiltration into the surrounding soft tissue and in rare cases causes hyperplasia of the adjacent bone. We report a case with clinical and radiological evidence of a 34-year-old female patient who reported a swelling in the left middle third of the face with exophytic temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis of the left side resulting in restricted mouth opening and facial asymmetry since 21 years. The number of cases reported in the literature is rare. Surgery is the treatment of choice.

Strategy for the Treatment of Zygomatic-Coronoid Ankylosis.

Zygomatic-coronoid ankylosis is a rare complication in maxillofacial trauma. Currently, less of 30 cases reported in the literature. The aim of this study was to report a case of zygomatic-coronoid ankylosis after trauma. A 26-year-old male, with zygomatic-coronoid ankylosis after 7 years of facial trauma, was treated by intraoral bilateral coronoidectomy. However, the literature continues to discuss the best approach, intraorally or extraorally. This study observed that the intraoral approach was easily performed and without complications.

An epidemiological study of temporomandibular joint ankylosis.

INTRODUCTION: The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) forms the very cornerstone of craniofacial integrity and its ankylosis in a growing child may cause problems in daily food intake, speech, appearance, and oral hygiene is affected to a major extent. It is one of the common acquired pathologies afflicting the skeleton. It is also the most overlooked and under-managed problem in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A house to house survey was conducted between 2010 and 2011 in rural and urban areas of Lucknow. A total of 21,720 children aged between 3-15 years from 9090 houses comprising a representat

A clinical study on ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint.

INTRODUCTION: Restoration of normal function and jaw movement in patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is difficult. Various techniques have been defined for the treatment of the condition. PATIENTS: This study is based on the pre-, intra- and post-operative evaluation of 78 TMJ operations in 59 patients who were treated for TMJ ankylosis between 1985 and 2002. METHODS: The patients in this study were evaluated with regard to age, gender, aetiology of ankylosis, ankylosis type/classification, existing facial asymmetry, maximal pre- and post-operative mouth opening, the arthro

Ankylosis of the temporalis-coronoid complex of the mandible.

Ankylosis of the temporalis-coronoid complex is a clinical entity. The etiology is usually direct trauma to the temporalis muscle or coronoid process of the mandible. It is difficult to differentiate diagnostically from ankylosis of the adjacent temporomandibular joint, and should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of inability to open the mouth. The treatment is always surgical and the intraoral approach is favored. The cure rate with this modality of therapy has been gratifying.

Preventive Management of a Primary Tooth with Ankylosis.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate preventive management strategies and optimal intervention timing for dental ankylosis of primary teeth complicated by suspected pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption (PEIR), providing an evidence-based framework for clinical diagnosis and management. Methods: This case retrospectively reports a 7-year-old patient with an ankylosed mandibular left second primary molar (tooth 75), exhibiting radiographic features suggestive of pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption. The patient was in the mixed dentition stage with dental crowding. Preventive and intercep

[Diagnosis and management of unilateral temporomandibular ankylosis].

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular joint ankylosis is defined as permanent jaw constriction with an interincisal mouth opening of less than 30 mm, due to bony, fibro-osseous or fibrous fusion. Ankylosis may be uni- or bilateral. The complications of this ankylosis affect the functions of mastication, swallowing and phonation, sometimes facial morphology, and disturb dental hygiene. The aetiologies are, in order of frequency, post-traumatic, infectious, inflammatory and congenital. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors present an algorithm for the management of temporomandibular ankylosis. Management

Ankylosis of the Temporomandibular Joint in Pediatric Patients.

INTRODUCTION: While surgical interventions for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis are well-documented, there is lack of consensus regarding the ideal approach in pediatric patients. Surgical interventions include gap arthroplasty, interpositional arthroplasty, or total joint reconstruction. METHODS: A systematic review of PubMed (Jan 1, 1990-Jan 1, 2017) and Scopus (Jan 1, 1990-Jan 1, 2017) was performed and included studies in English with at least one patient under the age of 18 diagnosed with TMJ ankylosis who underwent surgical correction. Primary outcomes of interest included surgic

Protocol for the management of ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint.

Ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a severely deforming, disabling condition as a result of craniomandibular fusion caused mainly by condylar fractures with displacement of the meniscus. Ankylosis may be fibrous, fibro-osseous, or bony, and unilateral or bilateral. The severity of the deformity is based on the onset, duration, and type of ankylosis. Various surgical techniques have been described for treatment, but no single treatment is recommended because of inconsistent results and the high rate of failure. While our total experience extends to 300 cases, we have developed a

SAPHO syndrome with ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint.

SAPHO syndrome is a rare combination of different symptoms with unknown aetiology. A complete ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in a patient with SAPHO syndrome has not been described previously. The goal of this case report is to present the disease, give an overview about the frequency of mandibular involvement and describe different therapeutic strategies. The complication of an ankylosis of the TMJ is noted and the literature is reviewed. The authors report a 42-year-old patient with SAPHO syndrome and recurrent swelling of the right mandible and the soft tissue. The persistin

False ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint in a cat.

Progressive inability to open the mouth developed in a cat after trauma to the head. Evaluation revealed a healed depression fracture of the left zygomatic arch and normal temporomandibular joints. Surgical exploration of the fracture confirmed a false ankylosis that developed between the depression fracture and the ramus of the mandible. Treatment included excision of the central portion of the zygomatic arch and a portion of the ramus. The cat regained normal function of its mouth.
