Eyelid switch flap technique for the management of congenital anophthalmos associated with contracted socket.

Congenital anophthalmos with contracted socket can occasionally present in the second or third decade for cosmetic correction of the deformity. Placement of ocular prosthesis is not possible due to reduced dimensions of the palpebral aperture and contracture of the bony socket. Horizontal widening of the palpebral aperture using an eyelid switch flap technique followed by placement of ocular prosthesis anterior to the hypoplastic orbit achieves good cosmetic correction of this deformity.

[Unilateral congenital anophthalmos with Trabecular agenesia and hydrophthalmos of the other eye (author's transl)].

In a one-year-old female patient, unilateral anophthalmos was ascertained by clinical, echographic and X-ray examination. In addition, the cranial computer tomogram showed trabecular agenesia. The globe of the other eye was existent and was enlarged by hydrophthalmos. Pediatrically this case represents a syndrome with multiple anomalies of etiologically unknown origin; apart from the ocular malformation there are a severe cerebral developmental disturbance, an apallic syndrome, hypsarrhythmia, peculiar disproportional bodily structure with skeletal anomalies as well as an abnormal susceptibili

Use of self-expanding, hydrophilic osmotic expanders (hydrogel) in the reconstruction of congenital clinical anophthalmos.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Rehabilitation of the congenitally anophthalmic orbit is frustrating to both the parents and physician. Traditional methods involve using progressively enlarging static acrylic conformers to expand the conjunctival socket, followed by placement of conventional static spherical orbital implants, dermis-fat grafts, or inflatable balloon expanders for orbital enlargement. Limitations of these methods typically result in less-than-optimal cosmetic outcomes, with retardation of bony orbital and overlying soft tissue growth adversely affecting midfacial growth and symmetry. Congenital cataract in the right eye and primary clinical anophthalmos of the left eye in a patient with cerebellar hypoplasia.

We examined a 26-year-old man who had an opaque lens OD and clinical anophthalmos OS. Low densities in the left cerebellar hemisphere and vermis and dilated ventricles were noted on a computed tomographic scan of his brain. We believe that the association of developmental cataract OD, clinical anophthalmos OS, and cerebellar hypoplasia in our patient may be rare.

[Clinical anophthalmos. Cosmetic outcome after 2 years therapy with an orbital expander for stimulating orbital growth].

BACKGROUND: Congenital anophthalmos is a rare condition in which intervention in an early age can stimulate orbital expansion. The therapeutic goal was to allow retention of a suitable prosthesis and to maximise facial symmetry. METHODS AND PATIENTS: We report on 3 anophthalmic newborn male patients, of which one presented with microphthalmos in the other eye as well as associated systemic disorders. Solid moulded shapes were adapted and manufactured out of methylmethacrylate to increase expansion of orbital soft tissue and bone. The moulding of the orbita was performed by silicone made of tw

Microphthalmos, rudimentary iris tissue, fundal coloboma and anophthalmos in ectrodactyly ectodermal dysplasia cleft lip/palate syndrome.

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-cleft lip/palate (EEC) syndrome presents with the triad of claw-like hand/feet, ectodermal dysplasia and cleft lip/palate. Presentation with the complete triad is rare. Involvement of intraocular tissues has rarely been reported. Here we report a case of EEC syndrome with complete triad, microphthalmos, rudimentary iris tissue, fundal coloboma and anophthalmos.

Clinical Congenital Anophthalmos and Microphthalmos-Experiences of Patients and Their Parents after More than 10 Years of Treatment.

Congenital clinical anophthalmos and blind microphthalmos describe the absence of an eye or the presence of a small eye in the orbit. Between 1999 and 2013, 97 children with anophthalmos or microphthalmos were treated with self-inflating, hydrophilic gel expanders at the Rostock Eye Clinic. More than a decade later, this study investigated the perspective of patients and parents regarding the treatment, the surgical outcome, and the emotional and social well-being of the patients. A total of 22 families with 16 patients sighted in the other eye and six patients blind in both eyes participated.

Anophthalmos with limb anomalies (Waardenburg opththalmo-acromelic syndrome): report of a new Italian case with renal anomaly and review.

Anophthalmos with limb anomalies (Waardenburg Opththalmo-Acromelic Syndrome) is a very rare autosomal recessive multiple congenital anomaly syndrome, first described by Waardenburg et al. in 1961 (MIM 206920). It is characterized by mono or more often bilateral anophthalmia/microphthalmia and foot malformations, which can be observed in 91% of the patients. The most common anomaly of the feet is the presence of four toes. The hands are affected bilaterally in 77% of the cases. The most characteristic anomaly is the synostosis of the fourth and fifth metacarpals. To date, 33 cases from 19 famil

Microphthalmos-anophthalmos-coloboma (MAC) spectrum in two brothers with Renpenning syndrome due to a truncating mutation in the polyglutamine tract binding protein 1 (PQBP1) gene.

Background: Patients with intellectual disability syndromes frequently have coexisting abnormalities of ocular structures and the visual pathway system. The microphthalmos, anophthalmos, and coloboma (MAC) spectrum represent structural developmental eye defects that occur as part of a syndrome in one-third of cases. Ophthalmic examination may provide important diagnostic clues in identifying these syndromes.Purpose: To provide a detailed and comprehensive description of the microphthalmos, anophthalmos, and coloboma (MAC) spectrum in two brothers with intellectual disability and dysmorphism.Me

Systemic and ophthalmological anomalies in congenital anophthalmic or microphthalmic patients.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital anophthalmos and microphthalmos are reported to occur in 1-20/100 000 newborn infants. The conditions may be characterised by associated pathology in the fellow eye when unilateral disease is present and/or by complex systemic anomalies. METHODS: We conducted a review of 75 patients with congenital anophthalmos or blind microphthalmos who were examined in our department from 1997 to 2008. Data on pregnancy, birth and family history were collected. Patients were screened for any pathology in the fellow eye in unilateral disease and for any systemic anomaly. RESULTS: S

Eye anomalies: seasonal variation and maternal viral infections.

INTRODUCTION: Eye anomalies, including anophthalmos and microphthalmos (absent eye and small eye), are common features in congenital infection syndromes such as rubella. Influenza, Coxsackie virus, and Parvovirus are less well-established teratogens. We report an ecologic analysis of anophthalmia/microphthalmia prevalence in England in relation to temporal variation in these infections using routine infection data. METHODS: The national (England) anophthalmos/microphthalmos register holds details of 406 babies (excluding chromosomal anomalies) born 1988-1994. Weekly infection data were obtain
