Patients with congenital anorectal malformations (ARM) often have other associated congenital defects. The reported incidence and the types of associated malformations vary between different studies. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the prevalences at birth of associated malformations in patients of a geographically defined population with ARM which were collected between 1979 and 2003 in 334, 262 consecutive births. Of the 174 patients with ARM during the study period, 49.4% had associated malformations. Patients with associated malformations were further classified into groups

Chronic renal failure remain the most significant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with anorectal malformation. The urological anomalies associated with anorectal malformations are not only anatomical, but also functional, the latter being related to congenital neurovesical dysfunction. The neurovesical dysfunction found in children with anorectal malformations results from a possible association with spinal dysraphism. The authors carried out urodynamic evaluation on 6 patients operated on for anorectal malformation by posterior sagittal anorectoplasty. 3 children had normal bladd

The value of radiography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detecting skeletal and intraspinal pathology was assessed in infants with anorectal malformations, and the need for spinal MRI examination in this group of patients was evaluated. Twenty-one infants were examined with radiography, ultrasound and MRI of the lower spine. The detection of skeletal and intraspinal abnormalities was compared for the three imaging modalities. Fifteen patients were normal in all three examinations. Radiography showed bony skeletal abnormalities in six children, although sometimes very subtle

Anorectal malformations (ARM) constitute a heterogeneous group of rare congenital anomalies affecting the cloaca. Although genetic factors are implicated in ARM pathogenesis, our understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms remains limited for both non-syndromic and syndromic ARM. Despite recent advancements, the genes identified so far account for only about 30% of the diagnostic yield from exome sequencing. Our study aimed to identify potential novel disease-causing mutations associated with ARMs. We performed exome sequencing on 12 patients with ARM and discovered a pathogenic singl

PURPOSE: Experience with male cloaca (MC), a single opening in perineum for passage of urine and meconeum is described.
METHODS: Cases of MC were ambispectively studied, prospectively from July 2007 to April 2015 and retrospectively for last three decades.
RESULTS: Seven cases of MC were identified, between the ages of newborn-4 years (median 10 days). Two missed cases underwent a colostomy, posterior sagittal anorectoplasty, and urethroplasty. Two cases underwent perineal urethrostomy and anoplasty followed by urethroplasty. In one case, part of the rectal wall was used to form urethral tub

BACKGROUND: Being born with an anorectal malformation (ARM) often leads to lifelong issues with faecal and urinary function, as well as challenges in sexual, emotional and psychosocial development. Even when anatomical correction is achieved, full functional recovery is not guaranteed. Despite several international consensus meetings with leading medical professionals in the ARM field, there is still no agreement on the essential outcome domains that should be measured for ARM treatment and follow-up. Therefore, the goal of this systematic review is to identify all the outcomes reported in lit

INTRODUCTION: Anorectal malformations (ARM) are an anatomically complex in which anorectum is either agenesic or communicates with neighboring organs. They are rarely found in adolescents. The aim of this study was to describe and discuss according to literature the three cases of ARM in adolescents.
CASE PRESENTATION: There were three young girls who were 12, 17 and 18 years old, transferred to the department of surgery for investigation and management. One of them consulted for chronic constipation and the two others for recto-vestibular fistula. One patient was admitted with a left colosto

INTRODUCTION: The clinical manifestation of a stretched low-lying cone (LLC) is represented by the tethered cord syndrome (TCS) with cutaneous, urologic, neurologic, and orthopaedic dysfunctions. TC is frequently found in patients with anorectal malformations (ARMs). The aim of our article is to report a series of patients affected by LLC and ARMs and evaluate their management and long-term follow-up results.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis over a period of 15 years including patients with ARM and TC and excluding those with severe polymalformations. We collected

PURPOSE: Anorectal malformations are often associated with other anomalies, reporting frequency with 40-70%. Gastrointestinal anomalies have been known to be relatively less common than associated anomalies of other organ system. This study was performed to assess a distinctive feature of cases associated with esophageal atresia.
METHODS: Clinical data (from January 2000 through December 2011) on the 196 subjects with anorectal malformations, managed in our Hospital, were reviewed. Total 14 neonates were identified with accompanying esophageal atresia and retrospective analysis was conducted.

PURPOSE: The classification of anorectal malformations (ARM) as high or low is based on clinical and anatomical characteristics. It has an impact on the surgical management but also on the functional prognosis. In the absence of consensus, our goal was to determine the value of imaging in the neonatal period for diagnosis and management of infants with ARM.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective study of 43 infants imaged over a 9 year period. The different imaging studies (abdominal and pelvic ultrasound, radiographs, percutaneous opacifications and fistulograms) performed for each infant were

OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence and type of complications presented in the patients with ARM treated with a colostomy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The patients data with diagnostic of ARM and colostomy beetween 1994 and 2005 were revised.
RESULTS: The colostomy was carried out in other centers in 185 patients (75.2%) and in our institution in 61 (24.8%). Two hundred eleven (85.8%) had a sigmoid colostomy. Only 124 patients had a diverting colostomy. Sigmoid colon was erroneously used as transverse in 2 cases. The space among the ostomies was very scarce in 10 and excessive in 5. The colostomy

Congenital anorectal malformations are found in many forms, and are frequently associated with other anomalies, especially of the spinal cord, spine, and urogenital system. Decisions concerning initial management of children with anorectal malformations can be made only after accurate determination of (a) the level and type of malformation, (b) the type of fistula, (c) the developmental state of the sphincter muscle complex, and (d) the presence of associated anomalies. Magnetic resonance imaging has proven to be the only modality to answer all these crucial questions, and has contributed to a

Today, the normal and abnormal development of the hindgut is still a matter of speculation. However, owing to recent studies in appropriate animal models, most embryological events that finally lead to abnormal hindgut development are better known than in the past: (1) The process of maldevelopment starts early in the embryo. (2) The cloacal membrane always is too short in its dorsal part. Thus the dorsal cloaca is missing too. (3) As a result, the hindgut remains attached to the sinus urogenitalis, thus forming the recto-urethral fistula. In the past, an impaired process of septation was beli

Anorectal malformations involve genitourinary anomalies frequently. In this study, the treatment and prognosis for genitourinary anomalies in 8 patients with anorectal malformations were discussed. All patients were men (range 1 to 14 years). Seven of them showed high types of anorectal malformations and one low type. Five patients were managed surgically. Among them, 3 were treated successfully, but the outcome was not good for 2 patients. These 2 patients have been followed up under careful observation. The treatment could not be performed on one patient with poor bowel function. In this ser
