Trace Metal Concentrations in Black Swan (Cygnus atratus) Eggshells from Urban and Coastal Wetlands in Southeastern Australia.

Urban wetlands are increasingly exposed to anthropogenic contaminants, including trace metals that may accumulate within aquatic food webs and pose risks to wildlife. This study quantified trace metal concentrations in post-hatched black swan (Cygnus atratus) eggshells collected from an urban wetland (Albert Park Lake, Melbourne; n = 17) and a coastal wetland (Pelican Island, Gippsland Lakes; n = 20) in southeastern Australia. Eggshells were analysed for arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn) using

Waterfowl Move Less in Heterogeneous and Human-Populated Landscapes, With Implications for Spread of Avian Influenza Viruses.

Animal movements contribute to the spread of infectious diseases and are driven in part by environmental conditions. We investigated the links among the environment, animal movement, and infectious disease dynamics in waterfowl, which are among the primary wildlife hosts of avian influenza viruses. By combining telemetry data on 4606 individuals from 26 waterfowl species with data on land cover, weather, and vegetation, we found that waterfowl moved less in areas of higher land cover heterogeneity and higher human population density. Moreover, predicted waterfowl movement distances were weakly

Genome analysis of gyroviruses identified in waterfowl in Arizona (USA).

Gyroviruses are small single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) viruses that are largely associated with birds. Chicken anemia virus is the most extensively studied gyrovirus due to its disease impact on the poultry industry. However, we know much less about gyroviruses infecting other avian species. To investigate gyroviruses infecting waterfowl, we determined six complete genome sequences that fall into three gyrovirus groups, referred to as waterfowl gyrovirus 1 (n = 3), 2 (n = 2), and 3 (n = 1), in organs from hunter-harvested waterfowl from Arizona (USA). The waterfowl gyrovirus 1 variants were identif

Effects of recombinant goose adiponectin on steroid hormone secretion in Huoyan geese ovarian granulosa cells.

Adiponectin is an adipokine associated with the regulation of reproductive processes. To determine whether recombinant goose adiponectin contributes to the goose ovarian steroidogenesis, the native and then purified goose recombinant adiponectin protein was produced using recombinant DNA technologies. The effect of recombinant adiponectin on the progesterone (P4) and estradiol (E2) production in Huoyan geese ovarian granulosa cells was examined. Furthermore, the effect of recombinant adiponectin (2.5 μg/mL) on the abundance of StAR (steroidogenic acute regulatory protein), CYP11A1 (cytochrome

Mercury demethylation in waterbird livers: dose-response thresholds and differences among species.

We assessed methylmercury (MeHg) demethylation in the livers of adults and chicks of four waterbird species that commonly breed in San Francisco Bay: American avocets, black-necked stilts, Caspian terns, and Forster's terns. In adults (all species combined), we found strong evidence for a threshold model where MeHg demethylation occurred above a hepatic total mercury concentration threshold of 8.51 +/- 0.93 microg/g dry weight, and there was a strong decline in %MeHg values as total mercury (THg) concentrations increased above 8.51 microg/g dry weight. Conversely, there was no evidence for a d

Surveillance of amyloidosis and other diseases at necropsy in captive trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator).

The purpose of this study was to characterize the incidence and diagnostic features of amyloidosis and other diseases found at necropsy in captive trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator). A search of Iowa State University's Department of Veterinary Pathology and Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory databases yielded 31 trumpeter swan (C. buccinator) necropsy cases from captive swans in protected habitats. Eleven of the 31 birds had amyloid deposition most commonly in the spleen (8 of 11), liver (7 of 11), and kidney (6 of 11) and less often in the pancreas (2 of 11) and adrenal gland (2 of 11). Amyloi

Anaphylaxis to duck and goose eggs with preserved tolerance to hen's eggs: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Selective allergy to eggs from specific avian species, while maintaining tolerance to hen's eggs, is rare and may present diagnostic challenges. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 75-year-old woman with no history of atopic disease who experienced episodes of anaphylaxis after consuming duck and goose eggs, while tolerating hen's eggs. Skin prick tests with commercial hen's egg extracts were negative. Serum testing revealed very low total IgE levels (5 kU/L) and low specific IgE to ovomucoid (Gal d 1), with negative results for other egg proteins. Prick-to-prick testing showed p

Migratory Wild Birds as Potential Long-Distance Transmitters of Toxoplasma gondii Infection.

Toxoplasma gondii is a worldwide distributed zoonotic protozoan capable of infecting a wide range of mammals (including humans) and birds as intermediate hosts. Migratory wild birds, through interconnecting countries along their flyways, can play a role in the spatial spread of T. gondii and could contribute to its sylvatic cycle. Additionally, hunted wild birds used for meat consumption could represent a further source of human infection. To determine the presence of T. gondii in wild birds, a total of 50 individuals belonging to the Anseriformes and Charadriiformes orders were sampled during

Septic Arthritis and Osteomyelitis Caused by Chryseobacterium indologenes in a Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) and a Ring-Billed Gull (Larus delawarensis).

A 20-year-old female mute swan (Cygnus olor) originally in a flock of free-living swans on a Long Island, New York, lake, was presented for facial swelling and decreased appetite. An adult male ring-billed gull (Larus delawarensis) was also presented to the same wildlife rescue center for bilateral lameness of 1-week duration. Once referred for veterinary evaluation and care, both species were diagnosed with septic arthritis and osteomyelitis caused by Chryseobacterium indologenes and treated with orbifloxacin until complete recovery. Chryseobacterium indologenes is infrequently diagnosed as a

State-level approaches to managing the use of contraceptives in wildlife in the United States.

Several fertility control agents have recently been registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for management of wildlife or other free-ranging animals. The registration of GonaCon Immunocontraceptive Vaccine for use in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and OvoControl for use in Canada geese (Branta canadensis) and pigeons (Columba livia) has caused state wildlife and land management agencies to review their regulatory authority over the use of contraceptives in wildlife. As a result, many states are taking steps to ensure legislation or policies are current with emergin

Surveillance of avian influenza viruses from 2014 to 2018 in South Korea.

Surveillance of influenza A viruses (IAVs) among migratory waterfowl is a first step in understanding the ecology, biology, and pathogenicity of IAVs. As part of the nationwide surveillance effort for IAVs in fowl in South Korea, we collected environmental fecal samples in different migratory bird stopover sites in South Korea during the winter seasons within November 2014 through January 2018. We collected a total of 6758 fecal samples, 75 of which were positive for IAV (1.11% positivity). Prevalence of IAVs varied per site and per year. Based on sequencing, the most prevalent hemagglutinin (

Influenza A/H4N2 mallard infection experiments further indicate zanamivir as less prone to induce environmental resistance development than oseltamivir.

Neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs) are the gold standard treatment for influenza A virus (IAV). Oseltamivir is mostly used, followed by zanamivir (ZA). NAIs are not readily degraded in conventional wastewater treatment plants and can be detected in aquatic environments. Waterfowl are natural IAV hosts and replicating IAVs could thus be exposed to NAIs in the environment and develop resistance. Avian IAVs form the genetic basis for new human IAVs, and a resistant IAV with pandemic potential poses a serious public health threat, as NAIs constitute a pandemic preparedness cornerstone. Resistance dev

Attachment Patterns of Human and Avian Influenza Viruses to Trachea and Colon of 26 Bird Species - Support for the Community Concept.

Avian influenza A viruses (AIVs) have a broad host range, but are most intimately associated with waterfowl (Anseriformes) and, in the case of the H13 and H16 subtypes, gulls (Charadriiformes). Host associations are multifactorial, but a key factor is the ability of the virus to bind host cell receptors and thereby initiate infection. The current study aims at investigating the tissue attachment pattern of a panel of AIVs, comprising H3N2, H6N1, H12N5, and H16N3, to avian trachea and colon tissue samples obtained from host species of different orders. Virus attachment was not restricted to the

[Distribution of lethal haemosporidoses pathogens in poultry].

Peculiarities of geographical distribution and distribution among hosts of the haemosporidian parasites, which cause lethal diseases in poultry, are specified. So far, 11 species of such parasites have been described. This represents about 5% of bird haemosporidian parasites. The haemosporidians cause the lethal epizooties in turkeys, chickens, ducks, geese, pigeons and domesticated ostriches. One species of parasites belongs to the family Haemoproteidae, six--to Plasmodiidae, and four--to Leucocytozoidae. The agents of lethal haemosporidioses have been recorded in domestic birds of the orders

Characterization of H9N2 avian influenza virus isolated from chickens and waterfowl in parts of Southern China from 2018 to April 2024.

The H9N2 subtype of avian influenza virus (AIV) has become endemic in poultry farms across China, providing internal genes for other subtypes of viruses and occasionally having the ability to infect humans, thereby posing a significant public health threat. In this study, 61 H9N2 viruses were isolated from chickens and waterfowl in Southern China between 2018 and April 2024. We characterized their genetic derivation, antigenic diversity, receptor-binding specificity, neuraminidase (NA) activity, replication, and transmission in chickens and systematic pathological analysis. Dominant Parasympathetic Modulation of Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability in a Wild-Caught Seabird.

Heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) provide noninvasive measures of the relative activity of the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which promotes self-maintenance and restoration, and the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), which prepares an animal for danger. The PNS decreases HR, whereas the SNS increases HR. The PNS and SNS also contribute to oscillations in heartbeat intervals at different frequencies, producing HRV. HRV promotes resilience and adjustment capacity in the organism to intrinsic and extrinsic changes. Measuring HRV can reveal the condition and emotional state o

The LORF5 Gene Is Non-essential for Replication but Important for Duck Plague Virus Cell-to-Cell Spread Efficiently in Host Cells.

Duck plague virus (DPV) can cause high morbidity and mortality in many waterfowl species within the order Anseriformes. The DPV genome contains 78 open reading frames (ORFs), among which the LORF2, LORF3, LORF4, LORF5, and SORF3 genes are unique genes of avian herpesvirus. In this study, to investigate the role of this unique LORF5 gene in DPV proliferation, we generated a recombinant virus that lacks the LORF5 gene by a two-step red recombination system, which cloned the DPV Chinese virulent strain (DPV CHv) genome into a bacterial artificial chromosome (DPV CHv-BAC); the proliferation law of
