Sea star wasting syndrome reaches the high Antarctic: Two recent outbreaks in McMurdo Sound.

Sea star wasting syndrome (SSWS) can cause widespread mortality in starfish populations as well as long-lasting changes to benthic community structure and dynamics. SSWS symptoms have been documented in numerous species and locations around the world, but to date there is only one record of SSWS from the Antarctic and this outbreak was associated with volcanically-driven high temperature anomalies. Here we report outbreaks of SSWS-like symptoms that affected ~30% of individuals of Odontaster validus at two different sites in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica in 2019 and 2022. Unlike many SSWS events i

Calcium Delivery Systems Assembled using Antarctic Krill Derived Heptapeptides: Exploration of the Assembly Mechanism, In Vitro Digestion Profile, and Calcium Absorption Behavior.

A novel heptapeptide QEELISK derived from Antarctic krill was used to assemble a calcium delivery system, of which the calcium binding mechanism of QEELISK, in vitro digestion kinetics, and calcium absorption behaviors were explored. QEELISK with continuous Glu possessed higher calcium binding capacity than that of QELEISK and QAALISK. Ca2+ bound to the carboxyl oxygen of Glu at position 3 of the QEELISK peptide at a stoichiometric ratio of 1:1 through charge-charge interaction; the formed QEELISK-Ca showed superior stability. Moreover, QEELISK-Ca underwent disaggregation and self-assembly dur

Antarctic teleosts with and without hemoglobin behaviorally mitigate deleterious effects of acute environmental warming.

Recent studies forecast that many ectothermic animals, especially aquatic stenotherms, may not be able to thrive or even survive predicted climate change. These projections, however, generally do not call much attention to the role of behavior, an essential thermoregulatory mechanism of many ectotherms. Here we characterize species-specific locomotor and respiratory responses to acute ambient warming in two highly stenothermic Antarctic Notothenioid fishes, one of which (Chaenocephalus aceratus) lacks hemoglobin and appears to be less tolerant to thermal stress as compared to the other (Nototh

Recent changes in the ventilation of the southern oceans.

Surface westerly winds in the Southern Hemisphere have intensified over the past few decades, primarily in response to the formation of the Antarctic ozone hole, and there is intense debate on the impact of this on the ocean's circulation and uptake and redistribution of atmospheric gases. We used measurements of chlorofluorocarbon-12 (CFC-12) made in the southern oceans in the early 1990s and mid- to late 2000s to examine changes in ocean ventilation. Our analysis of the CFC-12 data reveals a decrease in the age of subtropical subantarctic mode waters and an increase in the age of circumpolar

Fluoride content in bones of Adelie penguins and environmental media in Antarctica.

Fluoride (F) distribution and its effects (fluorosis) were investigated in Antarctica. Droppings (L) excreta selected of aquatic birds, lake water, soil and moss (Polytrichum alpinum) showed a high F concentration. Although bones of Adelie penguin (Pygiscelis adeliae) and skua (Catharacta maccormicki) showed exceptionally very high F concentration in the range of 832 to 7187 mg kg(-1), their radiographs did not show any evidence of skeletal fluorosis. The possible reason and geochemical aspects of F in Antarctica region are discussed.

A Synoptic View of the Ventilation and Circulation of Antarctic Bottom Water from Chlorofluorocarbons and Natural Tracers.

Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) is the coldest, densest, most prolific water mass in the global ocean. AABW forms at several distinct regions along the Antarctic coast and feeds into the bottom limb of the meridional overturning circulation, filling most of the global deep ocean. AABW has warmed, freshened, and declined in volume around the globe in recent decades, which has implications for the global heat and sea level rise budgets. Over the past three decades, the use of tracers, especially time-varying tracers such as chlorofluorocarbons, has been essential to our understanding of the format

Pygoscelis penguins as indicators of perfluoroalkyl substances pollution and global health risks - case study from King George Island (Western Antarctic).

Rapid warming in the Antarctic Peninsula not only affects ecosystem structure and species distributions but may also alter the transport, bioavailability, and effects of persistent pollutants - heightening the urgency of understanding contaminant dynamics in this vulnerable region. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are globally recognized persistent organic pollutants, yet their occurrence in Antarctic biota remains poorly constrained. We quantified 15 PFAS in feathers, eggshells and guano of Pygoscelis penguins collected at three colonies on King George Island (2021-2022). Most analy

Mercury concentrations in Antarctic zooplankton with a focus on the krill species, Euphausia superba.

The Antarctic is the most isolated region in the world; nevertheless, it has not avoided the negative impact of human activity, including the inflow of toxic mercury (Hg). Hg deposited in the Antarctic marine environment can be bioavailable and accumulate in the food web, reaching elevated concentrations in high-trophic-level biota, especially if methylated. Zooplankton, together with phytoplankton, are critical for the transport of pollutants, including Hg to higher trophic levels. For the Southern Ocean ecosystem, one of the key zooplankton components is the Antarctic krill Euphausia superba

Derivation of site-specific environmental quality guideline values for fuel-contaminated soils on sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island.

Accidental fuel spills associated with the storage, transfer, and use of diesel fuel for power generation have occurred on sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island since the establishment of the island's research station in 1948. An extensive in situ remediation program was implemented by the Australian government from 2009 to 2016 that used nutrient addition and air sparging to enhance the microbial degradation of petroleum products. During this period, a range of ecotoxicological assessments were conducted to better understand the impacts of fuel in soils on native biota and their sensitivity. This st

High-resolution mapping of Southern Ocean shipping emissions reveals policy-critical hotspots and post-pandemic rebound.

Antarctic shipping emissions are currently unregulated despite occurring in a sensitive environmental and geopolitical context. While previous studies have estimated tourism-related emissions, they lack the vessel type and spatial resolution necessary for effective mitigation strategies. This study integrates high-resolution Automatic Identification System (AIS) data with power-based modelling to quantify CO2 emissions from all ship classes operating in the Southern Ocean between 2019 and 2022. The findings reveal that ships operating south of 60°S emitted 0.63 million tonnes of CO2, with iceb

Exploring micropollutants in polar environments based on non-target analysis using LC-HRMS.

The routine use of chemicals in polar regions contributes to unexpected occurrence of micropollutants, with sewage discharge as a prominent pollution source. The aim of this study was to identify and quantify micropollutants in polar environments near potential point sources using non-target analysis (NTA) with liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry. Seawater samples were collected from Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard and Marian Cove, King George Island, in 2023. We tentatively identified 32 compounds with NTA, along with 105 homologous series substances. Of these, 18 substances were con

Melanoma and other skin cancers in circumpolar areas.

During the recent decades, the thickness of the ozone layer over the northern hemisphere has declined by 10 to 40 percent during the winter and spring months. Since ozone is the major barrier protecting the earth from dangerous short wave UV-radiation (UVB), the depletion in the ozone layer consequently increases the amount of UV-radiation reaching the earth's surface. As a rule a 10 percent reduction in the ozone layer causes ca. 20% increase in UV-radiation and a 40% increase in skin cancers. Thus relatively minor changes in ozone layer thickness may a have marked impact on the health of hum

Diversity and ecology of the prokaryotic microbiome associated with marine sponges across Antarctica.

Antarctic sponges host diverse and functionally relevant microbial communities that play central roles in the structure and resilience of polar benthic ecosystems. This review provides a focused analysis of the prokaryotic microbiomes associated with Antarctic sponges, with an emphasis on three ecologically significant species: Mycale (Oxymycale) acerata, Dendrilla antarctica, and Hymeniacidon torquata. Drawing from recent molecular studies, we examine the composition, predicted functional potential, and environmental responsiveness of these bacterial and archaeal communities. Comparative anal

Skuas as sentinels of high pathogenicity avian influenza H5N1 on the Antarctic Peninsula in the 2024/2025 austral summer.

Despite Antarctica's geographic isolation, the first incursion of high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 was detected in the 2023/2024 austral summer. Surveillance for HPAI H5N1 in Antarctica remains patchy due to logistical, financial and infrastructure challenges, with many suspected cases remaining unconfirmed and few viral genome sequences available to date. Through the 2024/2025 austral summer, we undertook five sampling expeditions to the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula facilitated by cruise ships/operators. Across more than 500 faecal environmental samples collect

Characterization of Toll-like receptor gene expression and the pathogen agonist response in the antarctic bullhead notothen Notothenia coriiceps.

Notothenia coriiceps, a typical Antarctic notothenioid teleost, has evolved to adapt to the extreme Antarctic marine environment. We previously reported an extensive analysis of the Antarctic notothenioid transcriptome. In this study, we focused on a key component of the innate immune system, the Toll-like receptors (TLRs). We cloned the full-length sequence of 12 TLRs of N. coriiceps. The N. coriiceps transcriptome for TLR homologue (ncTLR) genes encode a typical TLR structure, with multiple extracellular leucine-rich regions and an intracellular Toll/IL-1 receptor (TIR) domain. Vulnerability of Antarctica's ice shelves to meltwater-driven fracture.

Atmospheric warming threatens to accelerate the retreat of the Antarctic Ice Sheet by increasing surface melting and facilitating 'hydrofracturing'1-7, where meltwater flows into and enlarges fractures, potentially triggering ice-shelf collapse3-5,8-10. The collapse of ice shelves that buttress11-13 the ice sheet accelerates ice flow and sea-level rise14-16. However, we do not know if and how much of the buttressing regions of Antarctica's ice shelves are vulnerable to hydrofracture if inundated with water. Here we provide two lines of evidence suggesting that many buttressing regions are vuln

Diversity of Antarctic sea ice and under-ice seawater RNA viruses.

UNLABELLED: Sea ice is vital to polar ecosystems and serves as a natural laboratory for studying microbial adaptations in extreme environments. Nevertheless, the diversity and ecology of Antarctic marine RNA viruses have not been sufficiently explored. Here, 11 metatranscriptomes from Antarctic sea ice and ice-associated environments were analyzed to characterize RNA viral communities and their ecological differentiation between sea ice and seawater. Diverse RNA viral lineages were identified, of which Cryppavirales and Picornavirales were dominant. Lenarviricota was predominant in sea ice, hi

Plants, algae and lichens communities of Hope Bay, Antarctic Peninsula: floristic inventory and seabirds' influence.

The study aimed to describe and map the different plant communities that occur in Hope Bay (HB), Antarctic Peninsula. Floristic description was based on mosses, lichens and terrestrial algae species, forming a mosaic of cryptogamic plant communities. A vegetation map was developed based on images taken by the QuickBird sensor. Field campaigns were performed visiting 15 points previously selected in the image. All communities were georeferenced, and floristic work was done. The green alga Prasiola crispa forms the most widespread plant community in HB, closely associated with ornithogenic soils
