The effect of experimentally induced uniocular trauma was investigated in the adult albino rabbit by means of iris fluorescein angiography. Paracentesis, blunt trauma, occlusion of all four vortex veins or of the two long posterior ciliary arteries, or local instillation of nitrogen mustard, were performed in a number of animals, some of which received systemic aspirin preoperatively. Iris angiograms of the injured and the contralateral eye were performed immediately after the traumatic insult. The injured eye always showed an increased permeability to fluorescein. We treated 15 patients whose common characteristic was a severe windscreen injury (7 eyes) or an (mine) explosion trauma (8 eyes), nearly always affecting both eyes. 54 cases (54 eyes) of severe injury in the anterior segment of eye with little light perception were treated by reconstruction for the anterior segment of eye. The results showed that the eyeballs in 48 cases (88.9%) were survived successfully, and 28 cases (51.9%) of the grafts were clear. The procedures included keratoplasty, iridectomy, lensectomy, anterior vitrectomy, and reconstruction of the anterior chamber to restore the cosmetic shape of the eyeball. The indications, complications of the operation, and the surgical technique are discussed.

Because the part of the globe in direct contact with the transducer cannot be visualised and focussed transducers have poor imaging qualities at a distance less than 5-8 mm from their surface, diagnostic ultrasound of the anterior eye segment has been treated in a stepmotherly way. With a simplified immersion technique we can visualize quite accurately a variety of pathologic conditions of the cornea, anterior chamber, iris, lens and ciliary body. The presence of microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus in the eye is associated with an increased risk of deterioration of existing eye lesions. An opthalmological and parasitological examination of 630 persons was carried out in a hyperendemic focus of onchocerciasis in northern Togo.
