The distribution of the Burkitt's lymphoma-associated antigen (BLA) or globotriaosylceramide (Pk antigen) in normal human tissues and in 194 haematopoietic neoplasms was demonstrated by immunoperoxidase labelling of frozen tissue sections with monoclonal antibody 38.13. Staining was seen in most tissues of the body and was most pronounced in the epithelial compartments. In normal lymphoid tissue only dendritic reticulum cells, sinus-lining cells, macrophages and endothelial cells stained whereas lymphocytes were unlabelled. Among neoplasms, BLA was expressed strongly in 4/5 Burkitt's lymphomas

Mature T-cell neoplasms are relatively uncommon, accounting for approximately 10% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas. This category of hematopoietic neoplasms is clinically aggressive and shows a poor response to therapy and shortened survival. The antigen CD20 has long been thought to be a specific marker for B-cell lineage and has been used to help differentiate T-cell and B-cell neoplasms. We present two cases of a rare subset of T-cell leukemia/lymphoma having a unique immunophenotype, both being CD20+. The significance of CD20 antigen in T-cell lymphomas is yet to be determined, but may allow t

PurposeTo explore the potential of testosterone therapy in managing cytopenias in myelodysplastic neoplasm and investigate the link between hypogonadism and hematologic malignancies.MethodsA case of a patient with intermediate-risk myelodysplastic neoplasm and hypogonadism treated with testosterone replacement therapy is presented. Testosterone, prostate specific antigen, and erythropoietin levels were checked prior to therapy initiation and 3 months after. Blood counts were monitored over time. This is followed by a literature review of testosterone use in myelodysplastic neoplasm and the pre

1. Immunochemical cross-reactivity, but not identity, has been demonstrated between bovine parathyroid hormone and an antigen in biologically active extracts of human parathyroid tissue by quantitative C' fixation and C' fixation inhibition. 2. An antigen that fixes C' with rabbit antibody to bovine parathyroid hormone has been found in urea extracts of six human non-parathyroid neoplasms associated with a hypercalcemic syndrome mimicking primary hyperparathyroidism. Comparable extracts of control tissues and other tumors were serologically negative. 3. It is concluded that the tumor antigen i

Several syndromes affecting the red cell that mimic those induced by germline mutations may result from a somatic mutation that accompanies a myeloid malignancy. These syndromes are most notable in cases of myelodysplastic syndrome, but they are not limited to any one category of myeloid neoplasm. Their occurrence in males exceed the male predominance that is evident in myeloid neoplasms. The syndromes include disorders of globin chain synthesis (α- and β-thalassemia), heme synthesis (erythropoietic porphyria and erythropoietic uroporphyria), red cell membrane structure (elliptocytosis and sph

A case of nodular lymphocytic (centroblastic/centrocytic) lymphoma that developed within 5 months after the initial diagnosis of lymphoplasmocytic lymphoma is described. The change in the histopathological picture, consisting of the development of a functionally more differentiated B cell neoplasm, occurred in the abdominal lymph nodes while the original pattern persisted in the bone marrow, liver and spleen. The patient was also found to have a serum IgM/lambda monoclonal immunoglobulin exhibiting cold agglutinin activity with specificity for the 'non-I' erythrocyte antigens.

The rare association of severe erosive lichen planus and Castleman's tumor is presented. Castleman's tumor, or giant lymph node hyperplasia, is a benign neoplasm resembling thymic tumors and is associated with several immunologic abnormalities. Lichen planus also is associated with immunologic defects. One hypothesis linking these two diseases is that lymphocytes may become sensitized to tumor antigens on the Castleman's tumor and attack cross-reacting structures in the skin and other stratified squamous mucosae to produce the clinical picture of lichen planus.

The fetoplacental allograft and the malignant neoplasm represent the only 2 biologic conditions in which antigenic tissue is tolerated by a seemingly intact immune system. Recent investigations in the fields of tumor and pregnancy immunology have resulted in the recognition of a variety of immunologic mechanisms which are common to both systems. These common denominators are reviewed and a thesis suggesting a common mechanism in the nonrejection of pregnancy and malignancy, based on the presence of embryonic antigens in both systems, is presented.

Cancer therapy using unconjugated monoclonal antibodies (mAb) has been limited by the lack of immune effector function of the mAb and antigenic modulation. JD118 is a cytotoxic murine IgM mAb with reactivity restricted to a subset of normal B cells, some monocytic series cells, and a large percentage of B cell hematopoietic neoplasms including acute and chronic leukemias and lymphomas. Specificity was determined on several hundred normal and neoplastic, hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells and tissues, as well as progenitor cells. JD118 was able to kill fresh human leukemias and lymphomas

AIMS: To describe 13 examples of clear cell dermal duct tumour, a neoplasm previously underrecognized in the literature.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirteen examples of a neoplasm that we have named clear-cell dermal duct tumour were studied histopathologically and immunohistochemically. Histopathologically, all lesions consisted of mostly dermal neoplasms mainly composed of multiple solid aggregations of clear cells involving the dermis. Although the neoplasms were mostly solid, ductal structures were identified in all cases. Immunohistochemically, neoplastic cells were immunoreactive for MNF116 a

A case of ovarian carcinoma and systemic amyloidosis in a 64 year old woman with nephrotic syndrome is reported. Immunohistochemical study of renal and rectal biopsy specimens revealed the presence of amyloidosis AA antigens, consistent with secondary amyloidosis. The absence of chronic inflammatory or infectious disease suggested the presence of a neoplasm. The gynaecological sonogram showed a solid mass located behind the uterus. Laparotomy confirmed a poorly differentiated ovarian carcinoma. The association of systemic amyloidosis and ovarian carcinoma has not to our knowledge been describe

BACKGROUND: Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is a rare life-threatening autoimmune bullous disorder. The clinical picture is often polymorphous and blisters may be absent. Autoantibodies are directed against several target antigens, including plakins and desmogleins. PNP has a high mortality rate that does not directly depend on the malignancy of the neoplasm. No generally accepted diagnostic criteria for PNP have been defined.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: On the basis of four selected PNP patients and the relevant literature, the spectrum of clinical and immunopathological findings as well as pathoge

Adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) is a peripheral T-cell neoplasm caused by human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1). The prognosis of ATL, especially the acute and lymphoma subtypes, is poor with conventional and high-dose chemotherapy. The effectiveness of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) for ATL has been reported, suggesting the presence of a graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effect against this malignancy. To identify the target antigens associated with tumor rejection, we used SEREX (serological identification of antigens by recombinant cDNA expression cloning) to scr

Twenty-three T-cell neoplasms were divided, according to their reactivity with the OKT monoclonal antibodies as follows: Fourteen neoplasms of diverse histopathology expressed the OKT3+ OKT4+ phenotype, commonly associated with the helper T-cell subset; seven histologically similar lymphoblastic neoplasms expressed diverse phenotypes consistent with various stages of intrathymic differentiation and two neoplasms expressed the uncommon OKT3+ OKT10+ phenotype. Thus, T-cell neoplasms are divisible into phenotypes that correspond to normal stages of T-cell differentiation and functionally distinct

Mast cell sarcoma is a rare disease. We report an unusual case of this neoplasm arising in the ascending colon of a 32-year-old Japanese woman who presented with abdominal pain. An ulcerating mass in the colon was resected, along with enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes. Two years after surgery, the neoplasm recurred as left cervical lymphadenopathy and an intra-abdominal mass. Despite predonine and radiation therapy, the disease progressed, and the patient died. The tumor cells had abundant fine granular or clear cytoplasm, and oval, lobulated, or indented nuclei. Numerous mature eosinophils were

A series of 19 duodenal and 16 ampullary neoplasms was studied to determine their pathologic features on endoscopic biopsy, to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of this procedure, and to assess the usefulness of immunohistochemical staining for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in these neoplasms. The 11 benign neoplasms (31 per cent) were adenomas, five of which had focal hyperplastic features; the 24 malignant neoplasms (69 per cent) included ten intestinal-type carcinomas (resembling colonic carcinoma), seven anaplastic carcinomas (resembling diffuse gastric carcinoma), two adenocarcinomas in s

Primary neoplasms of choroid plexus are rare. Six morphological variants have been described: papillary, cystic, acinar, mucus-secreting, oncocytic, and anaplastic. The anaplastic variant, the so-called choroid plexus carcinoma, is the rarest of all and can metastasize. The differential diagnosis of the anaplastic variant of choroid plexus neoplasms with adenocarcinomas, melanomas and undifferentiated neoplasms can be troublesome chiefly in adults. The now large use of immunocytochemical techniques in tissue section has become a powerful tool in the analysis of cell lineages, tumoral and non-t

The authors report their cumulative experience of 19 children with what was previously called malignant histiocytosis (MH) but is now considered a true lymphoma and termed anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). The median age at diagnosis was 10 years and 6 months (range 2 y, 11 m, to 15 y). There were 13 males and 6 females. Most cases presented with fever, wasting and enlarged, often tender, lymph nodes. Other features were: fleeting cutaneous rashes in 7 cases; spontaneous regression of lymph nodes and skin lesions were seen in 5 patients. Bone marrow involvement was present in 3 cases, pul

OBJECTIVE: The origins and clinical significance of endosalpingiosis (ES), ectopic tubal epithelium, are not well understood. These investigations aim to characterize ES as it relates to normal fallopian tube, ovarian surface and serous neoplasms.
METHODS: A retrospective review of pathology reports from all prophylactic gynecologic surgeries from 2000 to 2010 was performed to assess the frequency of ES. Twenty-one archival specimens of ES, 6 normal fallopian tubes, 9 normal ovaries, 21 serous neoplasms and a commercially available ovarian tissue microarray were subjected to immunohistochemis
