The Endocannabinoid System, Aggression, and the Violence of Synthetic Cannabinoid Use, Borderline Personality Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder, and Other Psychiatric Disorders.

Endogenous and exogenous cannabinoids bind to central cannabinoid receptors to control a multitude of behavioral functions, including aggression. The first main objective of this review is to dissect components of the endocannabinoid system, including cannabinoid 1 and cannabinoid 2 receptors; the endogenous cannabinoids anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol; and the indirect cannabinoid modulators fatty acid amide hydrolase and monoacylglycerol lipase; that have shown abnormalities in basic research studies investigating mechanisms of aggression. While most human research has concluded that t

Sex bias in the diagnosis of histrionic and antisocial personality disorders.

The differential prevalence of the histrionic and antisocial personality disorders among men and women has been attributed both to sex biases and to actual variation in disorder base rates. The present study assessed the bias and base rate explanations and examined whether sex biases are minimized by the relatively explicit diagnostic criteria in the DSM-III. Psychologists (N = 354) either diagnosed 9 DSM-III disorders from case histories that varied in the ambiguity of the antisocial and histrionic personality disorder diagnoses or rated the degree to which specific features extracted from th

A twin study of the association between pathological gambling and antisocial personality disorder.

Many individuals with a history of pathological gambling (PG) also have a history of engaging in antisocial behaviors, and this has often been interpreted as a result of the former causing the latter. In a sample of 7,869 men in 4,497 twin pairs from the Vietnam Era Twin Registry, the authors examined (a) the association between PG and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), (b) the extent to which PG might be differentially associated with childhood conduct disorder (CD) and adult antisocial behavior (AAB), and (c) the contribution of genetic and environmental factors to the association of PG

Prevalence, demographics, and clinical correlates of antisocial personality disorder in Chinese methamphetamine patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is very common among methamphetamine (MA) patients, but very few studies have been conducted in China. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and clinical correlates of ASPD among Chinese MA patients. METHODS: We recruited 627 MA patients and collected demographic and MA use data through one-on-one semi-structured interviews. ASPD was measured by the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.). The Desires for Drug Questionnaire (DDQ) and visual analog scale (VAS) were used to assess drug cravings. RESULTS

[Neurobiological aspects of reactive and proactive violence in antisocial personality disorder and "psychopathy"].

Impulsive-reactive violent offenders show increased autonomic activity in response to negative emotional and threatening stimuli. A volume reduction and/or activity decrease of frontal brain structures associated with impulse control and the regulation of fear and anger are likewise found in combination with a fear-related hyperactivity of the amygdala. In addition, impulsive aggression is facilitated by variants of gene polymorphisms influencing the serotonergic system. Conversely, proactive-instrumental violent offender with psychopathy, who are characterized by a lack of empathy and remorse

Increased impulsivity in cocaine dependent subjects independent of antisocial personality disorder and aggression.

Several previous studies show a relationship between impulsivity and substance abuse; however, it is unclear whether the increased impulsivity seen in substance dependent groups is specifically related to substance abuse, or if it is due to concomitant antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) or aggression. The issue of whether impulsivity is specifically related to substance abuse is important since it has a bearing on risk factors for development of substance abuse. To determine whether cocaine dependent subjects show increased impulsivity independent of ASPD, the Barratt impulsiveness scale (

Antisocial Personality Disorder and depression in relation to alcoholism: a community-based sample.

OBJECTIVE: Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) and depression frequently co-occur with alcoholism. This study examined the relationship between the presence of ASPD or depression and the course and severity of alcoholism. METHOD: Alcoholic men (n = 207), recruited from a community-based sample, the Minnesota Twin-Family Study (MTFS), were categorized according to comorbid diagnoses into the following four groups: alcoholics with ASPD (n = 25), alcoholics with depression (n = 24), alcoholics with neither ASPD nor depression, but who were allowed to have additional psychopathology (n = 130)

The relationship of antisocial personality disorder and history of conduct disorder with crime incidence in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Commission of crime and hostility and their forensic consequences in a patient with schizophrenia can worsen the patient's condition and disturb his family, society, and even the psychiatrist. Based on previous research, patients with schizophrenia are at a higher risk for crime. It is not clear whether this is due to the nature of schizophrenia, comorbidity of antisocial personality disorder, or the history of conduct disorder in childhood. In this study, we investigated this hypothesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this case-control study, 30 criminal and 30 non-criminal patients w

Crack users and violence. What is the relationship between trauma, antisocial personality disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder?

TITLE: Crack users and violence. What is the relationship between trauma, antisocial personality disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder? BACKGROUND: Crack use is frequently related to severe social and psychiatric conditions including Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Social vulnerabilities increase the frequency of traumatic exposure. The relationship of trauma and psychiatric disorders among crack users is still unclear. OBJECTIVES: To describe the characteristics of crack users with ASPD and to verify of the association between ASPD and P

Impaired striatal glutamate/GABA regulation in violent offenders with antisocial personality disorder and psychopathy.

Men with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) with or without psychopathy (+/-P) are responsible for most violent crime in society. Development of effective treatments is hindered by poor understanding of the neurochemical underpinnings of the condition. Men with ASPD with and without psychopathy demonstrate impulsive decision-making, associated with striatal abnormalities in functional neuroimaging studies. However, to date, no study has directly examined the potential neurochemical underpinnings of such abnormalities. We therefore investigated striatal glutamate: GABA ratio using Magnetic

Neither mad nor bad? The classification of antisocial personality disorder among formerly incarcerated adults.

Using the National Comorbidity Survey, this study explores the presence and symptoms of antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) among people with varying degrees of contact with the criminal justice system. The study finds an elevated prevalence of ASPD among formerly incarcerated persons, but also that ASPD is not a simple linear function of actual or potential contact with the criminal justice system. For example, among people who have been arrested the prevalence of ASPD is not much greater than among those who committed a crime but were never arrested. Furthermore, the difference in prevale

Nonpsychotic thought disorder: objective clinical identification of somatization and antisocial personality in language patterns.

This report describes a new method of using language patterns to identify somatization and antisocial personality (ASPD) disorders in clinical practice. A set of definitions describing characteristic speech patterns was developed to identify "nonpsychotic thought disorder" (NPTD). Speech patterns of subjects with somatization disorder and/or ASPD were compared with those of controls. Blind raters assessed audiotaped samples of speech obtained through open-ended interviews for instances of elements of NPTD. Women with somatization or ASPD had significantly more NPTD speech responses than contro

Defense mechanisms in schizotypal, borderline, antisocial, and narcissistic personality disorders.

Numerous authors have theorized that defense mechanisms play a role in personality disorders. We reviewed theoretical writings and empirical studies about defenses in schizotypal, borderline, antisocial, and narcissistic personality disorders, developing hypotheses about these differential relationships. We then examined these hypotheses using dynamic interview data rated for defenses in a study of participants (n = 107) diagnosed with these four personality disorder types. Overall, the prevalence of immature defenses was substantial, and all four disorders fit within the broad borderline pers

The diagnosis of antisocial and hysterical personality disorders. An example of sex bias.

The author submits evidence to support the contention that antisocial and hysterical personality disorders are essentially sex-typed forms of a single condition. The features of each condition, he argues, are either common to both disorders or are related to sexual stereotypic traits. He reports on a study which indicates that mental health professionals tend to label men as antisocial personalities and women as hysterical personalities, even when these patients have identical clinical features. It is suggested that a unification of the two labels could have a beneficial effect on research and

A randomised controlled trial of mentalization-based treatment versus structured clinical management for patients with comorbid borderline personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is an under-researched mental disorder. Systematic reviews and policy documents identify ASPD as a priority area for further treatment research because of the scarcity of available evidence to guide clinicians and policymakers; no intervention has been established as the treatment of choice for this disorder. Mentalization-based treatment (MBT) is a psychotherapeutic treatment which specifically targets the ability to recognise and understand the mental states of oneself and others, an ability shown to be compromised in people with ASPD. The a

Comorbidity of borderline with antisocial and narcissistic personality disorders: a multimethod study.

BACKGROUND: The construct of borderline personality disorder (BPD) remains contentious, with some arguing that it embraces too much pathology to be of any real value as a clinical diagnosis. Examining BPD's comorbidity is key to understanding its heterogeneous vs. homogeneous nature. METHODS: This study aimed to uncover differences in patterns of symptoms and their severity between 3 groups of patients a with a DSM-5 diagnosis of BPD: (i) those with a single borderline diagnosis; (ii) those with a dual diagnosis of BPD and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD); those with a dual diagnosis of

Gender bias of antisocial and borderline personality disorders among psychiatrists.

PURPOSE: Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) challenge mental health professionals with similar maladaptive behaviors. However, these two disorders differ regarding available evidence-based treatments. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) has been criticized as being gender-biased diagnostic construct. The present study aimed to determine the gender bias of ASPD and BPD among Turkish psychiatrists. METHODS: Three case vignettes were randomly presented as male or female to the psychiatrists online. The first case was a pat
