Classic polyarteritis nodosa is a multisystem inflammatory disease associated with necrotizing vasculitis of small and medium arteries. The files of 138 patients suffering from rheumatic heart disease were studied in order to confirm the value of modified Jones' criteria and heart damage and to evaluate the contribution of echocardiography findings. Only files containing complete clinical and laboratory findings were studied. Of the 138 cases reviewed there were 51 cases of carditis (36.6 percent) and 87 cases of heart damage (63.4 percent). The inter-relationships of 25 variables in 140 rheumatoid patients were studied. One group, consisting mainly of hematologic variables, was differentiated on the basis of its high correlation with disease activity. The second group consisted of CRP and rheumatoid factor, which had highly significant positive correlations with each other. The third group consisted of serum aspartate aminotransferase, serum creatinine, antistreptolysin titre and blood eosinophils. These relationships are discussed.

Previous studies have suggested associations between Tourette syndrome and attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder and antistreptococcal antibodies and between Tourette syndrome and antinuclear antibodies. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The literature lacks data about the evaluation of throat-related symptoms proving chronic tonsillitis as the most common indication for adult tonsillectomy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the most important throat-related symptoms suggestive of chronic tonsillitis in adults.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study was carried out. The analysis of throat-related symptoms (complaints, tonsillitis rate, pharyngeal signs, and antistreptolysin-O titer) in 81 adults with histologically confirmed chronic tonsillitis was conducted.

PURPOSE: To determine the origin of scleritis, uveitis, and glaucoma in a boy with fever, sore throat, joint pains, and malaise.
METHODS: The patient underwent extensive hematologic, serologic, rheumatologic, and radiologic examinations.
RESULTS: The patient recovered after extensive medical therapy. He met the Jones criteria for the diagnosis of acute rheumatic fever and had an increased result for antistreptolysin O antibody titer.
CONCLUSIONS: Antistreptococcal antibody testing is helpful in diagnosing rheumatic fever as a cause of scleritis, uveitis, and glaucoma.

We report a case of acute dilated cardiomyopathy with histologic proof of inflammatory myocarditis. Although immunosuppressive therapy seemed to induce the resolution of the inflammatory infiltrate, it had no effect on the clinical course. The diagnosis of isolated rheumatic carditis was considered because of the finding of a very high antistreptolysin O titre and lack of evidence for either viral disease, infection with group C and G streptococci or other causes of spuriously high titres of anti-streptolysin O. In view of our conclusion longterm chemoprophylaxis was instituted.

Two patients diagnosed as Behçet's disease (BD) were found to be neutropenic. Chronic benign neutropenia commonly presents with symptoms that mimic BD. Here, it is important to decide whether neutropenia is a complication of BD or if the symptoms should be attributed to neutropenia. In our patients, symptoms improved after the treatment of neutropenia with granulocyte colony stimulating factor. Both patients had high antistreptolysin O titers denoting a recent streptococcal infection.

A 26-year-old male presented with oedema, massive albuminuria and microscopic haematuria. Kidney biopsy revealed enlarged cellular glomeruli infiltrated by polymorphs and eosinophils with focal fibrin deposits along the basement membrane. Microfilariae were seen in the lumen of few glomerular capillaries. Antistreptolysin titre was negative. The absence of other aetiological factors and presence of microfilariae within glomeruli suggests that nephrotic syndrome may be due to a filarial nephritis.

The case history of a woman born in 1946 is given. In 1968 she developed a syndrome of headache, fever. elevated antistreptolysin titer, enlarged and ballooned sella turcica, hypothyroidism secondary to TSH deficiency, secondary amenorrhoea of pituitary genesis, probable growth hormone deficiency, and secondary adrenocortical insufficiency. From 1972 all the mentioned pituitary defects of function disappeared, and the sella turcica gradually became normal in size as shown by X-ray examination.
