Prevalence of anxiety disorders and anxiety subtypes in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Anxiety disorders are common in Parkinson's disease (PD), but are not well characterized. This study determined the prevalence and clinical correlates of all DSM-IV-TR anxiety disorder diagnoses in a sample of 127 subjects with idiopathic PD who underwent comprehensive assessments administered by a psychiatrist and neurologist. A panel of six psychiatrists with expertise in geriatric psychiatry and/or movement disorders established by consensus all psychiatric diagnoses. Current and lifetime prevalence of at least one anxiety disorder diagnosis was 43% (n = 55) and 49% (n = 63), respectively.

Anxiety sensitivity and the anxiety disorders: a meta-analytic review and synthesis.

There has been significant interest in the role of anxiety sensitivity (AS) in the anxiety disorders. In this meta-analysis, we empirically evaluate differences in AS between anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and nonclinical controls. A total of 38 published studies (N = 20,146) were included in the analysis. The results yielded a large effect size indicating greater AS among anxiety disorder patients versus nonclinical controls (d = 1.61). However, this effect was maintained only for panic disorder patients compared to mood disorder patients (d = 0.85). Panic disorder was also associated wit

Severity of anxiety and work-related outcomes of patients with anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: This study examined associations between anxiety and work-related outcomes in an anxiety disorders clinic population, examining both pretreatment links and the impact of anxiety change over 12 weeks of treatment on work outcomes. Four validated instruments were used to also allow examination of their psychometric properties, with the goal of improving measurement of work-related quality of life in this population. METHODS: Newly enrolled adult patients seeking treatment in a university-based anxiety clinic were administered four work performance measures: Work Limitations Question

The relation between public speaking anxiety and social anxiety: a review.

This article reviewed the literature on public speaking anxiety in the context of social phobia subtyping. In total, 18 empirical studies on subtype issues related to public speaking anxiety were analyzed. Results of the reviewed studies are discussed in relation to their research method, that is, whether it focused on qualitative or quantitative aspects of subtype differences and whether it used a clinical or community sample. Evidence supported the premise that public speaking anxiety is a distinct subtype, qualitatively and quantitatively different from other subtypes of social phobia. The

Distinctions between separation anxiety and social anxiety in children and adolescents.

Separation anxiety and social phobia are intertwined to a considerable degree, and high comorbidity rates have been reported. The present study used latent class analysis (LCA) to investigate if classes of children and adolescents with-simultaneously-high rates of separation anxiety and low rates of social anxiety symptoms, or vice versa, could be identified. Eight- to 18-year-olds from a large general population (n=1000) and referred sample (n=735) were assessed with the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC). With LCA, a separate class of referred 8-11-year-old children with high

[Development of anxiety syndromes in childhood. The fate of children with anxiety disorders].

The authors study the course of childhood anxiety disorders and their relationship with adult psychopathology using data from children presenting anxiety disorders. The evolution of some of these disorders, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, is well documented but the evolution of other anxiety disorders is still controversial.

Tailoring anxiety assessment for Parkinson's disease: The Chinese Parkinson anxiety scale with cultural and situational anxiety considerations.

Recognizing the gap in mental health assessment, particularly in evaluating anxiety among Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, with an emphasis on cultural context and PD-specific situational anxiety. This study aimed to refine the Parkinson Anxiety Scale (PAS) and emphasized the importance of health equity by addressing cultural context and PD-specific situational anxiety. The revised version, named the Chinese Parkinson Anxiety Scale (CPAS), was developed to include PD-specific situational anxiety and culturally relevant items, addressing the unique challenges faced by the Eastern PD populatio

Cognitive errors, anxiety sensitivity, and anxiety control beliefs: their unique and specific associations with childhood anxiety symptoms.

This study examined the interrelations among negative cognitive errors, anxiety sensitivity, and anxiety control beliefs and explored their unique and specific associations with anxiety symptoms in a community sample of youth. Existing research has suggested that these constructs are related to childhood anxiety disorder symptoms; however, additional research is needed to test the interrelations among negative cognitive errors, anxiety sensitivity, and anxiety control beliefs and to determine if they show unique and specific associations with anxiety symptoms. The results of this study indicat

Social anxiety disorder.

Although social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common and disabling disorder that may occur in different cultural settings, it is under-diagnosed by clinicians. In order to facilitate accurate diagnosis, the clinical features and differential diagnosis of SAD are described, together with useful assessment instruments for clinicians. Aetiological evidence suggests that the causal pathways for SAD include genetic, neurobiological, temperamental and cognitive factors. A range of effective treatments for SAD are available: current findings suggest that the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSR

Generalized anxiety disorder.

The diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) was first introduced in 1980 with the publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition (DSM-III) of the American Psychiatric Association. Prior to this, the diagnosis of "anxiety neurosis" was given to patients with symptoms similar to those now incorporated within the GAD category. Originally, GAD was created as a residual category within the anxiety disorders as a rubric for patients with serious anxiety problems but without panic attacks. Panic disorder therefore received far more research attention,

In 1990s, it was found that GSAD is more common, more disabling, and more chronic than previously realized. For the first time, there are good data about a range of effective treatment options that can offer these patients substantial relief and protection from their disability.

Generalized anxiety disorder.

Patients with generalized anxiety disorder experience worry or anxiety and a number of physical and psychologic symptoms. The disorder is frequently difficult to diagnose because of the variety of presentations and the common occurrence of comorbid medical or psychiatric conditions. The lifetime prevalence is approximately 4 to 6 percent in the general population and is more common in women than in men. It is often chronic, and patients with this disorder are more likely to be seen by family physicians than by psychiatrists. Treatment consists of pharmacotherapy and various forms of psychother

[Nonspecific melancholic anxiety].

In this psychopathological study the role of unfathomableness in the experience of anxiety is investigated from semistructured interviews of melancholic (N = 160) and neurotic depressive (N = 93) patients (diagnostic criteria acc. to ICD-9). In melancholic patients groundless anxiety is found as rarely as in the neurotic control group. The patients' reports about their experience of anxiety show that concrete and groundless anxiety are felt as equally unpleasant. Transitional forms between groundless and concrete anxiety can be identified, the frequency of which however, does not contribute to

Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) for detecting anxiety disorders in adults.

BACKGROUND: Despite being highly prevalent mental health conditions, anxiety disorders frequently go undiagnosed. The Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) is a widely used self-report scale for measuring the severity of anxiety, which has also been used for anxiety screening. OBJECTIVES: To assess the test accuracy of the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) in adults against structured or semi-structured diagnostic interviews for the following target conditions: any anxiety disorder (AAD), generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), and panic disorder (PD). SECONDARY OBJECTIVES: - To explore sources of heterogenei
