On Grounds of the Memory Effect in Amorphous and Crystalline Apatite: Kinetics of Crystallization and Biological Response.

Memory effects, despite being intrinsic to biological systems, are rarely potentiated in biomaterials. By exploring the transition between amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) and hydroxyapatite (HAp) from different empirical angles, here, we attempt to set the basis for elicitation of structural memory effects in CPs. Two CPs precipitated under different degrees of saturation (DS), yielding HAp at a low DS and ACP at a high DS, were shown to evolve into structures with a high level of crystallographic similarity after their prolonged aging in the solution and served as the basis for this study.

Stable migration of peri-apatite-coated uncemented tibial components in a multicentre study.

AIMS: Hydroxyapatite coatings for uncemented fixation in total knee arthroplasty can theoretically provide a long-lasting biological interface with the host bone. The objective of this study was to test this hypothesis with propriety hydroxyapatite, peri-apatite, coated tibial components using component migration measured with radiostereometric analysis over two years as an indicator of long-term fixation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 29 patients at two centres received uncemented PA-coated tibial components and were followed for two years with radiostereometric analysis exams to quantify

Strontium-containing apatite/polylactide composites enhance bone formation in osteopenic rabbits.

UNLABELLED: Strontium (Sr) has been shown to favor bone formation and is used clinically to treat osteoporosis. We have previously reported that Sr addition in apatite/polylactide composites could enhance the BMP-induced bone formation around implants at ectopic site in healthy animals. In this study we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Sr addition on the local bone formation in osteoporosis. Apatite/polylactide composite granules with different Sr content were loaded with equal amount of rhBMP-2 and implanted intramuscularly in healthy rabbits (Con) and rabbits that received bilateral

Carbonate apatite nephrolithiasis associated with Corynebacterium urealyticum urinary tract infection in a dog.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections caused by Corynebacterium urealyticum are uncommon in veterinary medicine. Encrusted cystitis, encrusted pyelitis and uroliths have been described as complications in humans, but only encrusted cystitis and cystoliths have been reported in dogs so far. Because C. urealyticum is usually resistant to all standard antibacterial drugs, antimicrobial treatment and elimination of this microorganism are challenging. CASE REPORT: An 11-month-old female spayed mixed-breed dog was evaluated because of a C. urealyticum urinary tract infection, mineralisation within b

The development of carbonate-containing apatite/collagen composite for osteoconductive apical barrier material.

The current report describes the properties of a new apical barrier material formulated from carbonate-containing apatite (CAp) and collagen. CAp particles of around 50 nm were deposited on reconstituted collagen fibers. CAp/col with about 60 wt % CAp (corresponding to apatite content of bone) was obtained after 1 day of calcification. CAp content increased up to about 80 wt % in a 15-day calcification reaction. CAp/col was composed of fine calcified collagen fibers. The crystallinity and Ca/PO(4) ratio of CAp were comparable to those of bone apatite. The mixture of CAp/col and saline reached

Strontium-substituted apatite coating grown on Ti6Al4V substrate through biomimetic synthesis.

During the last few years Strontium has been shown to have beneficial effects when incorporated at certain doses in bone by stimulating bone formation. It is believed that its presence locally at the interface between an implant and bone will enhance osteointegration and therefore, ensure the longevity of a joint prosthesis. In this study we explore the possibility of incorporating Sr into nano-apatite coatings prepared by a solution-derived process according to an established biomimetic methodology for coating titanium based implants. The way this element is incorporated in the apatite struct

The neocartilaginous formation with hydroxyl-apatite in injection laryngoplasty: an experimental study on rabbit model.

Adductor paralysis or the pathologies occurring after laryngeal surgery such as scarring or atrophy of the vocal cords cause glottic insufficiency during phonation. Injection laryngoplasty has been a widely accepted technique due to lower morbidity of the procedure and the applicability via endoscope in the treatment of these pathologies. Various materials have been used in injection laryngoplasty. The primary expectations in these techniques are the persistence of injected material long enough, without resorbtion or any cause of serious tissue response and having beneficial effects in reinfor

In vitro apatite formation on polyamide containing carboxyl groups modified with silanol groups.

Modification of organic polymer with silanol groups in combination with calcium salts enables the polymer to show bioactivity, that is, the polymer forms apatite on its surface after exposure to body environment. However, how modification with silanol groups influences ability of apatite formation on the polymer substrate and adhesive strength between polymer and apatite is not yet known. In the present study, polyamide containing carboxyl groups was modified with different amounts of silanol groups, and its apatite-forming ability in 1.5SBF, which contained ion concentrations 1.5 times those

Coating of an apatite layer on polyamide films containing sulfonic groups by a biomimetic process.

Coating organic polymers with hydroxyapatite is an attractive method for the development of materials for medical applications, as it allows hydroxyapatite to show its unique biological properties such as its ability for bone bonding and protein adsorption. The biomimetic process focuses attention on fabricating such hydroxyapatite-polymer hybrids, where bone-like apatite is deposited on an organic polymer surface in solutions mimicking physiological conditions. In this process, a bone-like apatite layer can be coated onto organic substrates either by using a simulated body fluid (SBF), which

Nucleation of apatite crystals in vitro by self-assembled dentin matrix protein 1.

Bones and teeth are biocomposites that require controlled mineral deposition during their self-assembly to form tissues with unique mechanical properties. Acidic extracellular matrix proteins play a pivotal role during biomineral formation. However, the mechanisms of protein-mediated mineral initiation are far from understood. Here we report that dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1), an acidic protein, can nucleate the formation of hydroxyapatite in vitro in a multistep process that begins by DMP1 binding calcium ions and initiating mineral deposition. The nucleated amorphous calcium phosphate preci

Matrix vesicles in osteomalacic hypophosphatasia bone contain apatite-like mineral crystals.

Hypophosphatasia, a heritable disease characterized by deficient activity of the tissue nonspecific isoenzyme of alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP), results in rickets and osteomalacia. Although identification of TNSALP gene defects in hypophosphatasia establishes a role of ALP in skeletal mineralization, the precise function remains unclear. The initial site of mineralization (primary mineralization) normally occurs within the lumen of TNSALP-rich matrix vesicles (MVs) of growth cartilage, bone, and dentin. We investigated whether defective calcification in hypophosphatasia is due to a paucity and

Two bovine models of osteogenesis imperfecta exhibit decreased apatite crystal size.

In recent years advances have been made in detailing the changes in both collagen and noncollagenous proteins caused by a variety of mutations leading to osteogenesis imperfecta. Much less, however, is known about the mineral phase in the affected bone. In this report, we measured the crystallinity of the apatite in bovine OI bone. Line broadening of the 002 reflection (which estimates changes in the long or c axis of the crystals) and of the 310 reflection (which estimates changes in the thickness of the crystals) both show large decreases (30 and 35% respectively). Synergistic Flotation Mechanism of Apatite Using Lauric Acid-Lauryl Alcohol Combined Collector.

To investigate the synergistic effect of fatty alcohols on the flotation performance of fatty acid collectors, a novel combined collector comprising lauric acid and lauryl alcohol was prepared. Flotation results of apatite indicated that the combined collector with 30% lauryl alcohol exhibited the best flotation performance. Under the conditions of pH 9 and a combined collector dosage of 50 mg/L, the flotation recovery of apatite exceeded 99% in the temperature range of 5-45 °C. In contrast, lauric acid alone produced a lower flotation recovery and exhibited strong temperature dependence. Ther

Effect of the fluoride concentration in electrolyte on adhesion of an apatite layer formed on an anodized zirconium surface.

Zirconium is used clinically as a material for hard-tissue repair because it has excellent corrosion resistance, low magnetic susceptibility, and low cytotoxicity. Bone-bonding ability is required to stably fix zirconium implants in bone, and anodization in a fluoride solution has been proposed as a method to achieve this. Because the corrosion reaction rate and surface crystalline phase change according to the fluoride concentration, it is assumed that the fluoride concentration in the electrolyte will affect bone bonding and mechanical properties. However, few studies have investigated this.

PMMA bone cement with L-arginine/nano fish bone nanocomplex for apatite formation.

Bone cement is one of the materials used in orthopaedics that serves various functions, such as binding bone implants, replacing damaged bones and filling spaces within bones. Various materials have been used to synthesize bone cement, and one promising material for further research is fish bone waste-based bone cement. This study investigates the potential of fish bone waste-based bone cement by incorporating nano fish bone (NFB) and L-arginine (L-Arg) protein into polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) to examine apatite growth. NFB derived from the Salmo salar fish positively influences osteoblast
