Antibiotics, primary symbionts and wing polyphenism in three aphid species.

The possible role of the primary Buchnera symbionts in wing polyphenism is examined in three aphid species. Presumptive winged aphids were fed on antibiotic-treated beans to destroy these symbionts. As previously reported, this leads to inhibited growth and low/zero fecundity. When such treatment is applied to the short-day-induced gynoparae (the winged autumn migrant) of the black bean aphid, Aphis fabae, it also causes many insects to develop as wingless or winged/wingless intermediate adult forms (apterisation). However, whilst antibiotic treatment of crowd-induced, long-day winged forms of

Induction of soluble and cell wall peroxidases by aphid infestation in barley.

Peroxidase enzymes have been found in soluble, ionically bound, and covalently bound forms and have been implicated in several physiological processes in plants. This paper investigates the effect of aphid infestation on soluble and bound-cell wall peroxidase activity and bound-cell wall isoform changes of barley plants. Peroxidase activity was measured in control plants and plants infested with the aphid Schizaphis graminum (Rondani). The activity of soluble peroxidases increased with time of infestation, older plants being more affected than younger ones. The increase in bound-cell wall pero

Overwintering adaptations in the lettuce root aphid Pemphigus bursarius (L.).

Pemphigus bursarius (L.) is a host alternating root-feeding aphid with a proportion of the population overwintering as asexual hiemalis in the soil. These hiemalis must be sufficiently cold tolerant to survive at the temperatures they would experience in winter, and also be able to overcome a period of prolonged starvation brought about by the absence of secondary host plants. Cold tolerance experiments showed field collected hiemalis to be considerably more cold hardy than laboratory summer apterae, with an LTemp(50) of -13.1 degrees C compared with 2.3 degrees C. In a constant exposure at 0

Detection of Stress in Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) Caused by Aphids Using Leaf Level Hyperspectral Measurements.

: Remote sensing can be a rapid, accurate, and simple method for assessing pest damage on plants. The objectives of this study were to identify spectral wavelengths sensitive to cotton aphid infestation. Then, the normalized difference spectral indices (NDSI) and ratio spectral indices (RSI) based on the leaf spectrum were obtained within 350⁻2500 nm, and their correlation with infestation were qualified. The results showed that leaf spectral reflectance decreased in the visible range (350⁻700 nm) and the near-infrared range (NIR, 700⁻1300 nm) as aphid damage severity increased, and significan

Methyl salicylate attracts natural enemies and reduces populations of soybean aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in soybean agroecosystems.

Methyl salicylate, an herbivore-induced plant volatile, has been shown to attract natural enemies and affect herbivore behavior. In this study, methyl salicylate was examined for its attractiveness to natural enemies of the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), and for its direct effects on soybean aphid population growth rates. Methyl salicylate lures were deployed in plots within organic soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] fields. Sticky card traps adjacent to and 1.5 m from the lure measured the relative abundance of natural enemies, and soybean aphid populations were

A gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase of Aphidius ervi venom induces apoptosis in the ovaries of host aphids.

Parasitism by the endophagous braconid Aphidius ervi (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) has a negative impact on the reproductive activity of its host, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Homoptera, Aphididae). The host castration is induced by the parasitoid venom and is reproduced by the injection of chromatographic fractions highly enriched with two proteins, of 18 (p18) and 36 kDa (p36) in size, respectively. Here we demonstrate that these bioactive proteins trigger apoptosis of the cells in the germaria and ovariole sheath of the host aphid. Both p18 and p36 were internally sequenced and the gathered information

Genome-wide studies of PAL genes in sorghum and their responses to aphid infestation.

Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL, EC 4.3.1.25) plays a crucial role in plant adaptation to biotic and abiotic stresses. However, the current knowledge about PAL proteins in sorghum is essentially lacking. Thus, in this study we aimed to analyze the PAL family genes in sorghum using a genome-wide approach and to explore the role of PAL genes in host plant resistance to aphids via SA-mediated defense signaling. Here, we report gene structural features of 8 PAL (SbPAL) genes in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), their phylogeny, protein motifs and promoter analysis. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the

Identification of G protein-coupled receptors in the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum.

GPCRs play crucial roles in the growth, development and reproduction of organisms. In insects, a large number of GPCRs have been reported for Holometabola but not Hemimetabola. The recently sequenced pea aphid genome provides us with the opportunity to analyze the evolution and potential functions of GPCRs in Hemimetabola. 82 GPCRs were identified from the representative model hemimetabolous insect Acyrthosiphon pisum, 37 of which have ESTs evidence, and 73 are annotated for the first time. A striking difference between A. pisum, Drosophila melanogaster and Tribolium castaneum is the duplicati

Population dynamics of soybean aphid and biotic mortality at the edge of its range.

The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, was introduced to north central North America from Asia in 2000, and it has become a major pest of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr. Understanding how natural enemies impact aphid populations in the field is an important component in developing a comprehensive management plan. We examined the impact of naturally occurring predators in the field by using exclusion cages during July-August 2004 and 2005. Field cages of different mesh diameters were used to exclude different sizes of natural enemies from aphid-infested plots. Plots were surveyed twice we

Specialised placement of morphs within the gall of the social aphid Pemphigus spyrothecae.

BACKGROUND: The strategic placement and aggregation of certain castes within the nests of eusocial insects such as bees and ants results in complex colonies that enjoy increased fitness through improved efficiency of social tasks. To examine if this advanced social phenomenon might apply to social aphids, the location of the numerous morphs within the nests (plant galls) of the aphid species Pemphigus spyrothecae was examined. RESULTS: A strong, almost exclusive tendency for soldiers to occupy the gall section nearest to the opening was detected. In addition, it was found that the most reprod

Systemic response to aphid infestation by Myzus persicae in the phloem of Apium graveolens.

Little is known about the molecular processes involved in the phloem response to aphid feeding. We investigated molecular responses to aphid feeding on celery (Apium graveolenscv. Dulce) plants infested with the aphid Myzus persicae, as a means of identifying changes in phloem function. We used celery as our model species as it is easy to separate the phloem from the surrounding tissues in the petioles of mature leaves of this species. We generated a total of 1187 expressed sequence tags (ESTs), corresponding to 891 non-redundant genes. We analysed these ESTs in silico after cDNA macroarray hy

Identification and Functional Analysis of Candidate Effectors in the Sorghum Aphid, Melanaphis sorghi.

The sorghum aphid (Melanaphis sorghi), a phloem-feeding insect pest, causes severe economic losses in sorghum-producing regions worldwide. During feeding, aphids secrete salivary proteins with potential effector functions that play pivotal roles in plant-insect interactions. However, relatively few secreted proteins and effectors have been characterized in M. sorghi. In this study, proteomic analysis of aphid-infested sorghum leaves identified 69 putative aphid-derived proteins. Bioinformatic analyses were subsequently used to predict signal peptides within these proteins. Among the five candi

Lipid metabolism in the aphid-Buchnera symbiosis: an underexplored dimension of insect physiology.

Lipids are essential biomolecules that function as energy reserves, signaling mediators, and structural components of cellular membranes, yet their roles in insect-microbe symbiosis remain poorly understood. In contrast to the well-established contributions of microbial symbionts to amino acid and vitamin metabolism, symbiotic lipid metabolism has received comparatively little attention. Here, we review current knowledge of lipid metabolism in insect symbiosis, focusing on the aphid-Buchnera association as a model of obligate mutualism. Physiological evidence indicates that aphids rely primari

FESW-UNet: A Dual-Domain Attention Network for Sorghum Aphid Segmentation.

Current management strategies for sorghum aphids heavily rely on indiscriminate chemical application, leading to severe environmental consequences and impacting food safety. While precision spraying offers a viable remediation for pesticide overuse, its effectiveness depends on accurately locating and classifying pests. To address the critical challenge of segmenting small, swarming aphids in complex field environments, we propose FESW-UNet, a dual-domain attention network that integrates Fourier-enhanced attention, spatial attention, and wavelet-based downsampling into a UNet backbone. We int

Symbiotic weaponry: the role of bacterial mediators in aphid-plant defense conflicts.

Severe aphid infestations drive unsustainable pesticide use, necessitating deeper understanding of aphid-plant-microbe interactions. To control those pests like aphids, which may cause severe infestations on vegetables and field crops, we need to understand how they maintain the relationship with the host plant. So, these studies compiled interesting characteristics of microbial involvements in plant-aphid interaction and the specific roles of bacterial communities, and how those impact the actual interactions between aphids and their plant hosts. This includes aphid-sympathetic (obligate and

Categories of Resistance to Sugarcane Aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae) Among Sorghum Genotypes.

The sugarcane aphid Melanaphis sacchari (Zehnter) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) has emerged as a potential threat to sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) production in the United States. Since the late summer of 2013, finding and advancing M. sacchari-resistant germplasm has been a priority for all stakeholders involved. We evaluated 23 sorghum genotypes for resistance to the sugarcane aphid by testing for tolerance, and antixenosis. In addition, nine sorghum germplasm were evaluated for the expression of antibiosis. Free-choice and no-choice tests were conducted to explore the functional categories

Modelling and manipulation of aphid-mediated spread of non-persistently transmitted viruses.

Aphids vector many plant viruses in a non-persistent manner i.e., virus particles bind loosely to the insect mouthparts (stylet). This means that acquisition of virus particles from infected plants, and inoculation of uninfected plants by viruliferous aphids, are rapid processes that require only brief probes of the plant's epidermal cells. Virus infection alters plant biochemistry, which causes changes in emission of volatile organic compounds and altered accumulation of nutrients and defence compounds in host tissues. These virus-induced biochemical changes can influence the migration, settl

Heritable Phytohormone Profiles of Poplar Genotypes Vary in Resistance to a Galling Aphid.

Insect galls are highly specialized structures arising from atypical development of plant tissue induced by insects. Galls provide the insect enhanced nutrition and protection against natural enemies and environmental stresses. Galls are essentially plant organs formed by an intimate biochemical interaction between the gall-inducing insect and its host plant. Because galls are plant organs, their development is likely to be governed by phytohormones involved in normal organogenesis. We characterized concentrations of both growth and defensive phytohormones in ungalled control leaves and galls

Trans-generational effects on diapause and life-history-traits of an aphid parasitoid.

Transgenerational effects act on a wide range of insects' life-history traits and can be involved in the control of developmental plasticity, such as diapause expression. Decrease in or total loss of winter diapause expression recently observed in some species could arise from inhibiting maternal effects. In this study, we explored transgenerational effects on diapause expression and traits in one commercial and one Canadian field strain of the aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi. These strains were reared under short photoperiod (8:16 h LD) and low temperature (14 °C) conditions over two generatio
