[Effect comparison of arachnoid cysts in sacral canal].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of two different surgical treatments for arachnoid cysts in sacral canal. METHODS: From January 2004 to March 2009, 55 cases of arachnoid cysts in the sacral canal were treated by traditional simple sacral laminectomies with resection of the cysts (group A, 25 cases) and novel CT-guided percutaneous fibrin glue therapy of arachnoid cysts (group B, 30 cases). Of them, there were 23 males and 32 females, aging 15-66 years with an average of 42.6 years; the duration of symptoms was 6 months to 15 years with an average of 3.5 years. L5-S1 was involved

Coexistent intraventricular abnormalities in periventricular giant arachnoid cysts.

OBJECT: Arachnoid cysts are congenital lesions that arise during development by splitting of the arachnoid membrane. Large cysts can be adjacent to CSF pathways causing a marked midline shift and hydrocephalus. The association between a large arachnoid cyst and hydrocephalus has been commonly described as being due to a mass effect, but these previous reports have not focused closely on any associated intraventricular abnormalities. METHODS: Seven patients who were previously treated with a cystoperitoneal shunt presented with shunt failure, hydrocephalus, and/or cyst expansion. All of these

Radiologic differentiation of intracranial epidermoids from arachnoid cysts.

OBJECTIVE: Intracranial epidermoids (cholesteatomas) mimic arachnoid cysts in their radiologic characteristics, especially in the cerebellopontine angle. It is essential to differentiate the two conditions because they warrant different therapeutic interventions. The objective of this study is to elucidate the different radiologic characteristics of the conditions. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a retrospective study of 4 patients referred for a differential diagnosis and management of intracranial cystic lesions to the Departments of Neurotology/Neurosurgery and Neuroradiology in a terti

Stereotactic cysto-ventricular shunting in diencephalic (arachnoid) cysts.

Stereotactic cysto-ventricular shunting in three patients with congenital (subependymal cyst of the 3rd ventricle, subependymal cyst of foramen of Monroi, cyst of cavum septi pellucidi) is dealt with in this paper. The first operation was performed in May 1992 and the latest, being considered in this paper, in January 1993. All patients were admitted to our hospital suffering from increased intracranial pressure. CT-scans revealed an obstructive hydrocephalus subjected to the cystic lesions. After stereotactic puncture of these cysts, aspiration of their contents as well as biopsy of the wall

Arachnoid Cyst: An Asymptomatic Exuberance.

A 66-year-old man presented to the emergency department with sudden onset of dysarthria, left central facial palsy, and left hemihypesthesia involving the tongue. The patient was hemodynamically stable (blood pressure of 153/84 mmHg and heart rate of 80 bpm) and normoglycemic, without a history of trauma or toxic exposure. Assuming an acute stroke, the patient immediately underwent a brain CT scan that revealed a large left-sided fronto-parieto-temporal arachnoid cyst, with approximately 9.5 x 5.1 cm of maximum diameters (anteroposterior and transversal), compressing the brain parenchyma and t

Extradural Arachnoid Cyst Excision.

Arachnoid cysts are an uncommon postoperative complication and can result in back pain, radiculopathy, and/or cauda equina syndrome. For symptomatic postoperative arachnoid cysts, surgical management is the accepted treatment. While excision of arachnoid cysts is the preferred surgical method, cysts with adhesions to nerve roots and/or dura can be treated with cyst fenestration to reduce morbidity of excision. Surgeons should be prepared for dural defects after cyst excision, which can require dural grafting and lumbar drains for cerebrospinal fluid diversion.

Asymptomatic giant arachnoid cyst.

A 51-year-old male bricklayer without cerebral symptoms underwent whole-body FDG PET for suspicion of mediastinal sarcoidosis. PET/CT incidentally demonstrated a voluminous right frontal arachnoid cyst with normal glucose metabolism in the adjacent cortex. MRI demonstrated compression of the ipsilateral cerebral parenchyma and precentral, angulate, callosal, and superior frontal sulci. Functional bilateral finger-thumb paradigm MRI revealed right hemispheric reorganization of cortical motor activation with prominent activation between the inferior frontal gyrus and the postcentral gyrus.

Spinal extradural arachnoid cyst.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Spinal extradural arachnoid cysts are uncommon expanding lesions. Idiopathic arachnoid cysts are not associated with trauma or other inflammatory insults. If they enlarge, they usually present with progressive signs and symptoms of neural compression. PURPOSE: Total removal of the cyst and repair of the dural defect is the primary treatment for large thoracolumbar spinal extradural arachnoid cysts causing neurogenic claudication. Laminoplasty may prevent spinal deformities in long segmental involvement. STUDY DESIGN: A clinical case was performed. PATIENT SAMPLE: We repo

Ophthalmic manifestations of ruptured arachnoid cysts in children.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial arachnoid cysts are relatively common in the pediatric population. Rarely, they rupture, leading to acute subdural fluid collections, which can cause a sudden increase in intracranial pressure. The purpose of this study was to characterize ophthalmic sequelae in a large cohort of these patients. METHODS: The medical records of all children treated for ruptured arachnoid cysts who presented at a single tertiary pediatric hospital for initial assessment between 2009 and 2021 were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: Of 35 children treated for ruptured arachnoid cysts dur

Long-term endocrine outcome of suprasellar arachnoid cysts.

OBJECTIVE Due to their distinct location, suprasellar arachnoid cysts are known to cause a wide variety of problems, such as hydrocephalus, endocrine symptoms, and visual abnormalities. The long-term outcome of these cysts has not been elucidated. To find out the long-term outcome of suprasellar arachnoid cysts, a retrospective review of the patients was performed. The neurological and endocrine symptoms were thoroughly reviewed. METHODS Forty-five patients with suprasellar arachnoid cysts, with an average follow-up duration of 9.7 years, were enrolled in the study. A comprehensive review was

[Epidemiology and classification of arachnoid cysts in children].

The prevalence of arachnoid cysts in children is 1-3%. They are more frequent in boys. They can be located intracranially or in the spine. Intracranial cysts are classified as supratentorial, infratentorial, and supra-infratentorial (tentorial notch). Supratentorial are divided into middle cranial fossa, convexity, inter-hemisferic, sellar region, and intraventricular. Infratentorial are classified into supracerebellar, infracerebellar, hemispheric, clivus, and cerebellopontine angle. Finally spinal arachnoid cysts are classified taking into account whether they are extra- or intradural, and n

Children With Intracranial Arachnoid Cysts: Classification and Treatment.

We performed a dynamic study of arachnoid cysts (ACs) using magnetic resonance cisternography (MRC) and proposed a classification of ACs.Twenty-three suitable patients in our hospital entered into this study according to our inclusion criteria. MRC images were collected in all the subjects at 1 and 24 hours after the administration of intrathecal gadolinium-diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid (Gd-DTPA). We allocate the enrolled patients into 2 groups, MRC group and surgery group. The MRC results were considered before treatment in 1 group (MRC group, 13 patients), whereas another group was su

Petrous and sphenoid arachnoid cysts: diagnosis and management.

BACKGROUND: Intraosseous arachnoid cysts are rare and difficult to diagnose. The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical and radiological semiology of petrous and sphenoid arachnoid cysts and to propose a specific management strategy. METHODS: This was a retrospective, descriptive study of patients with arachnoid cysts, which utilized CT, MRI, and the patients' medical histories. RESULTS: Ten patients were included in this study. On CT, the lesions were lytic with bony delineation. On MRI, the lesions exhibited the same signals as cerebrospinal fluid and were not enhanced after co

Maze learning in patients with intracranial arachnoid cysts.

BACKGROUND: The temporal lobe is of importance for visuospatial orientation. Intracranial arachnoid cysts have a predilection for the temporal fossa, and might therefore affect visuospatial orientation. The aim was to find out whether temporal cysts affect maze learning and if surgical cyst decompression improves maze performance. METHODS: Forty-five patients with a temporal arachnoid cyst and 17 control patients with cervical disc disease were tested in a labyrinth route in the hospital corridors the day before surgery and at least 3 months postoperatively. RESULTS: Thirty-five cyst patient
