Emergent Arboviruses and Renal Transplantation: A Global Challenge.

In recent years, Zika, Chikungunya, Dengue, West Nile Fever, and Yellow Fever epidemics have generated some concerns. Besides difficulties related to vector control, there are challenges related to behavior of pathologies not yet fully understood. The transplanted population requires additional care due to immunosuppressive drugs. Furthermore, the potential risk of transmission during donation is another source of uncertainty and generates debate among nephrologists in transplant centers. Do the clinical outcomes and prognoses of these infections tend to be more aggressive in this population?

Sylvatic cycles of arboviruses in non-human primates.

Arboviruses infecting people primarily exist in urban transmission cycles involving urban mosquitoes in densely populated tropical regions. For dengue, chikungunya, Zika and yellow fever viruses, sylvatic (forest) transmission cycles also exist in some regions and involve non-human primates and forest-dwelling mosquitoes. Here we review the investigation methods and available data on sylvatic cycles involving non-human primates and dengue, chikungunya, Zika and yellow fever viruses in Africa, dengue viruses in Asia and yellow fever virus in the Americas. We also present current putative data t

Factors contributing to and strategies to combat emerging arboviruses.

Less than half a century ago infectious diseases appeared to be destined to be extinguished via as a culmination of medical triumphs. As focus turned towards combating non-communicable diseases, emerging and re-emerging diseases (EIDs) have bloomed from those ashes. Five epidemic mosquito-borne arboviruses (Yellow Fever virus (YFV), Dengue virus, West Nile virus, Chikungunya virus, and Zika virus) have emerged in the recent past. Arboviruses are of the utmost importance with respect to EIDs due to intensive growth of globalisation, arthropod urban fitness/adaption, and environmental changes. W

[Transovarial transmission of arboviruses by mosquitoes (author's transl)].

An important aspect of the epidemiology of arboviruses is the manner in which the viruses are maintained during winter, dry season, or other adverse environmental periods when their arthropod hosts are inactive. One possibility is that the viruses survive in arthropods. In the case of mosquito-borne viruses, it is probable that such viruses could be maintained in this manner only if they were transmitted from one insect generation to the next by transovarial transmission. Such transmission was reported in 1905 by Marchoux and Simond for yellow fever virus in Aedes aegypti. Other workers were u

Epidemiological investigation for arboviruses in Jamaica, West Indies.

Arbovirus investigation in Jamaica was undertaken between 1960 and 1975. Serological studies showed that antibodies to dengue type virus and St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLE) were prevalent throughout the island for several years. In urban communities, the incidence of dengue antibody was higher than for SLE; however, in children under 10 years of age antibody to both viruses was rarely present. In rural areas, SLE was prevalent in adults and children. This virus was isolated fom Culex nigripalpus (mosquitoes) and from a nestling Mockingbird, Mimus polyglottos, in the same rural area. Dengue

[A serological survey of arboviruses in the human population of Senegal].

2,457 serum samples collected during an epidemiological survey on treponematosis in Senegal by the W. H. O. IR051 team in five areas of Senegal between 1972 and 1975 were studied for arbovirus antibodies using hemagglutination inhibition test. In addition 998 were studied using CF test and 1012 in neutralization test with yellow fever virus. The prevalence of arbovirus antibodies is important in all the country and does not vary basically between the different areas. In group A, chikungunya antibody is the most frequent and Sindbis antibody was found only in areas where migrant birds are resti

[Use of suspension adsorption methods for studying arboviruses].

Hemagglutinating antigens of Western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) virus and 5 strains of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus were charcaterized by their capacity to adsorb on inorganic (kaolin, bentonite, barium sulphate) and organic (chick embryo fibroblasts) adsorbents. The adsorption capacity of TBE virus was more marked than that of WEE. The TBE virus strains 4072 and 1524 avid in serological tests adsorbed better on inorganic adsorbents than nonavid strains No. 80 and 1509. In contrast, nonavid strains interacted better with biologic adsorbents. The adsorption capacity of tissue culture

Comparison of the virion polypeptides of group B arboviruses.

The virion polypeptides of eight group B arboviruses were compared by polyacrylamide gel coelectrophoresis. All contained three polypeptides, V-1, V-2, and V-3. The mosquito-borne viruses had electrophoretically similar small membrane polypeptides (V-1); the tick-borne viruses had a V-1 of significantly decreased mobility.

Nanostructured impedimetric lectin-based biosensor for arboviruses detection.

Arboviruses have been emerging as a significant global health problem due to the recurrent epidemics. Arboviruses require the development of new diagnostic devices due to the nonspecific clinical manifestations. Herein, we report a biosensor based on cysteine (Cys), zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONp), and Concanavalin A (ConA) lectin to differentiate between arboviruses infections. ConA is capable of interacting with the saccharide components of the viral capsid. In this study, we evaluated the reproducibility, sensitivity, and specificity of the sensor for the virus of Dengue type 2 (DENV2), Zi

Neglected Australian Arboviruses Associated With Undifferentiated Febrile Illnesses.

Infections with commonly occurring Australian arthropod-borne arboviruses such as Ross River virus (RRV) and Barmah Forest virus (BFV) are diagnosed routinely by pathology laboratories in Australia. Others, such as Murray Valley encephalitis (MVEV) and Kunjin (KUNV) virus infections may be diagnosed by specialist reference laboratories. Although Alfuy (ALFV), Edge Hill (EHV), Kokobera (KOKV), Sindbis (SINV), and Stratford (STRV) viruses are known to infect humans in Australia, all are considered 'neglected.' The aetiologies of approximately half of all cases of undifferentiated febrile illness

Arboviruses in water birds (Ciconiiformes, Pelecaniformes) from Florida.

Sera from 360 ciconiform and pelecaniform birds collected in Florida (USA) from 1974 to 1990 were tested for serum neutralizing (SN) antibodies to eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), St. Louis encephalitis (SLE), and Everglades (EVE) viruses. Serum neutralizing antibodies to EEE virus were detected in 2%, to SLE virus in 7%, and to EVE virus in none of the samples. Pelecaniform birds (16%) had a higher antibody prevalence (P < 0.02) for SLE virus than did ciconiform birds (5%). Virus could not be isolated from 67 samples. Nestling birds with SN antibodies to both EEE and SLE viruses were found

Trifluoperazine exhibits broad-spectrum antiviral activity against arboviruses.

The recurrent outbreaks and geographical expansion of mosquito-borne arboviruses pose a significant challenge to public health worldwide. The disease outcome for arboviral infections ranges from acute febrile illness to severe conditions such as encephalitis, hemorrhagic shock, and mortality. Current treatment options for these viruses are limited to supportive care, necessitating an urgent need for a safe and effective broad-spectrum antiviral. In this study, we have identified trifluoperazine (TFP), an FDA-approved antipsychotic, as a potent broad-spectrum antiviral against Japanese encephal

Detection of neutralizing antibodies against arboviruses from liver homogenates.

Yellow fever virus (YFV) circulates in a sylvatic cycle between non-human primates (NHPs) and arboreal mosquitoes in Brazil. Passive monitoring of ill or deceased NHPs is a key component of the Brazilian yellow fever (YF) surveillance program. Samples from NHPs carcasses are usually suitable for molecular tests but not for serological assays. As an alternative to the conventional plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) based on sera, we tested the utility of liver homogenates from experimentally infected (YFV, Mayaro virus [MAYV], chikungunya virus [CHIKV], or mock) mice to quantify PRNTs.

ArboAlvo: stratification method for territorial receptivity to urban arboviruses.

OBJECTIVE: To present the urban arboviruses (dengue, zika and chikungunya) stratification methodology by the territorial receptivity Index, an instrument for the surveillance and control of these diseases, which considers the heterogeneity of an intra-municipal territory. METHODS: Ecological study that uses as unit of analysis the areas covered by health centers in Belo Horizonte. For the development of a territorial receptivity index, indicators of socio-environmental determination of urban arboviruses were selected in order to integrate the analysis of main components. The resulting compone

Arboviruses and Muscle Disorders: From Disease to Cell Biology.

Infections due to arboviruses (arthropod-borne viruses) have dramatically increased worldwide during the last few years. In humans, symptoms associated with acute infection of most arboviruses are often described as "dengue-like syndrome", including fever, rash, conjunctivitis, arthralgia, and muscular symptoms such as myalgia, myositis, or rhabdomyolysis. In some cases, muscular symptoms may persist over months, especially following flavivirus and alphavirus infections. However, in humans the cellular targets of infection in muscle have been rarely identified. Animal models provide insights t

Laboratory transmission potential of British mosquitoes for equine arboviruses.

BACKGROUND: There has been no evidence of transmission of mosquito-borne arboviruses of equine or human health concern to date in the UK. However, in recent years there have been a number of outbreaks of viral diseases spread by vectors in Europe. These events, in conjunction with increasing rates of globalisation and climate change, have led to concern over the future risk of mosquito-borne viral disease outbreaks in northern Europe and have highlighted the importance of being prepared for potential disease outbreaks. Here we assess several UK mosquito species for their potential to transmit
