Concomitant Lemierre's Syndrome and Base-of-Skull Osteomyelitis Caused by Arcanobacterium haemolyticum, Complicated by Ceftriaxone-Associated Cholecystitis: A Case Report.

Lemierre's syndrome and base-of-skull osteomyelitis can occur together in immunocompetent adolescents with Arcanobacterium haemolyticum bacteraemia. Prolonged high-dose ceftriaxone may precipitate symptomatic cholecystitis. Clinicians should consider A. haemolyticum as a causative pathogen in invasive head and neck infection, including Lemierre's syndrome and osteomyelitis, even in immunocompetent hosts.

Experimental Infection of Mink Enforces the Role of Arcanobacterium phocae as Causative Agent of Fur Animal Epidemic Necrotic Pyoderma (FENP).

Fur Animal Epidemic Necrotic Pyoderma (FENP) is a severe, often lethal infectious disease affecting all three fur animal species: mink (Neovision vision), foxes (Vulpes lagopus) and finnraccoons (Nyctereutes procyonoides). Previous studies showed an association between Arcanobacterium phocae and FENP. An experimental infection was conducted to confirm the ability of A. phocae to infect mink either alone or concurrently with a novel Streptococcus sp. found together with A. phocae in many cases of FENP. Different inoculation methods were tested to study possible routes of transmission. Typical s

Double whammy: Delayed cerebral ischemia of a 19-year-old secondary to sinogenic complications from an uncommon bacterial sinusitis, Arcanobacterium haemolyticum.

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum, found as normal flora in healthy individuals, is an unusual culprit for pharyngitis and sinusitis in young adults, rarely leading to severe infections. Here, we present a singular case involving a 19-year-old immunocompetent male who experienced complications arising from A haemolyticum sinusitis, leading to orbital and intracranial sinogenic complications. The patient developed severe cerebral vasospasm with delayed cerebral ischemia, necessitating aggressive management encompassing daily catheter-directed intra-arterial infusions, surgical source control, and ma

Genotypic characterization and evaluation of an antibiotic resistance of Trueperella pyogenes (Arcanobacterium pyogenes) isolated from milk of dairy cows with clinical mastitis.

Trueperella pyogenes, recently reclassified from the genus Arcanobacterium, is considered the causative agent of acute suppurative mastitis called summer mastitis. T. pyogenes produces a variety of known and putative virulence factors that include pyolysin and factors promoting adhesion to host cells. The objective of this study was to report the presence of virulence genes in T. pyogenes isolates that were identified as etiological agents of clinical mastitis in cows, as well as to determine antimicrobial resistance and distribution of selected determinants that can be associated with phenoty

Identification of Arcanobacterium phocae isolated from fur animals by phenotypic properties, by MALDI-TOF MS analysis and by detection of phocaelysin encoding gene phl as probable novel target.

In the present study 12 Arcanobacterium phocae strains isolated from fur animals in Finland, including foxes, minks and Finnraccoons, could successfully be identified phenotypically, by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and genotypically by sequencing 16S rDNA and phocaelysin (PHL) encoding gene phl. The PHL of all 12 A. phocae strains in the present study and reference strains A. phocae DSM 10002T and A. phocae DSM 10003 displayed, as typical members of the cholesterol dependent cytolysin-group of toxins, the variant undecapeptide sequ

A case series on chronic canaliculitis.

INTRODUCTION: Primary chronic canaliculitis is an uncommon disease, which is often misdiagnosed and insufficiently treated. We present two cases of canaliculitis caused by two different organisms, Actinomycetes spp. and Arcanobacterium haemolyticum. To the best of our knowledge, canaliculitis due to Arcanobacterium haemolyticum has not been reported before. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The two cases described in this series show typical clinical features of canaliculitis with an inflamed upper canaliculus, not responsive to topical antibiotics. Appropriate treatment was delayed as they were initiall

Characterization of some Actinomyces-like isolates from human clinical specimens: reclassification of Actinomyces suis (Soltys and Spratling) as Actinobaculum suis comb. nov. and description of Actinobaculum schaalii sp. nov.

Five strains of a hitherto unknown Actinomyces-like bacterium were isolated from human clinical sources, including blood cultures. Biochemical and chemotaxonomic characterization indicated that the strains were distinct from previously described Actinomyces and Arcanobacterium species. A comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis demonstrated that the undescribed strains constitute a new subline within the Actinomyces-Arcanobacterium species complex. The closest known relative of the isolates was found to be Actinomyces suis, although a 16S rRNA sequence divergence value of approximately 6% c

DIAGNOSIS AND MEDICAL AND SURGICAL MANAGEMENT OF CHRONIC INFECTIOUS FIBRINOUS PLEURITIS IN AN OKAPI (OKAPIA JOHNSTONI).

A 10-yr-old female okapi (Okapia johnstoni) at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park was evaluated for intermittent malaise, inappetence, occasional cough, abdominal splinting, and licking at both flanks. Physical examination revealed tachypnea, tachycardia, and fluid sounds on thoracic auscultation. Transthoracic ultrasound showed multiple uniform, anechoic filled structures in the right and left pleural space. Surgical exploration of the thoracic cavity revealed bilateral, mature, fibrous, compartmentalizing adhesions between the visceral and parietal pleura, confirming a diagnosis of chronic, infec

Application of a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for molecular identification of Trueperella pyogenes isolated from various origins.

In the present study 28 Trueperella pyogenes strains isolated from various origins could successfully be identified with a newly designed loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay based on gene cpn60 encoding chaperonin. No cross reaction could be observed with control strains representing four species of genus Trueperella and seven species of closely related genus Arcanobacterium. The present cpn60 LAMP assay might allow a reliable and low cost identification of T. pyogenes also in laboratories with less specified equipment.

Influence of various treatment methods on bacteriological findings in cows with puerperal endometritis.

The aim of the study was to identify the species of microorganisms isolated from the uterus of healthy cows (control group) and cows affected with puerperal metritis (PM) before and after an experimental therapy with an immunomodulator and antibiotics versus commonly applied methods (antibiotic + beta-blocker or antibiotic + PGF2alpha). Examinations were carried out on 110 cows with PM in three farms with similar system of rearing and nutrition. The control group consisted of 21 cows without postpartum disturbances. Smears from the uterus were taken before treatment and then at 21st day of obs

Characterization of Actinomyces turicensis and Actinomyces radingae strains from human clinical samples.

Whole-organism protein electrophoresis was used to compare and group unidentified coryneform bacteria resembling Gardnerella vaginalis and various Actinomyces and Arcanobacterium species. The obtained clusters of strains were further characterized by whole-cell fatty acid analysis and a variety of biochemical tests. Species-specific oligonucleotide probes based on 16S rRNA gene sequences were designed. The results demonstrate that the majority of the isolates belonged to Actinomyces turicensis; the other strains belonged to Actinomyces radingae. The descriptions of both species are emended.

Mandibular pyogranulomatous osteomyelitis in a Sannen goat.

Mandibular pyogranulomatous osteomyelitis was diagnosed in a female Sannen goat. The doe presented for difficulty prehending and chewing food. The left mandible was swollen and firm on palpation. Radiographs revealed changes consistent with osteomyelitis of the affected mandible. Arcanobacterium pyogenes was isolated from aspirates of swollen mandible. Despite antimicrobial therapy, the goat died. Histopathological findings were consistent with pyogranulomatous disease of the affected mandible. The histopathological findings were similar to those reported for actinomycosis, caused by Actinomyc

Human infections with Actinomyces pyogenes (Corynebacterium pyogenes).

Actinomyces pyogenes (Corynebacterium pyogenes), a well-known pathogen in many animals, was isolated from 11 Danish patients since 1968. Bacteriologic characteristics and clinical pictures of the patients are described. Ability to hydrolyze gelatine, to produce beta-glucuronidase, to reach with antisera against group-G streptococci, and to produce acid from xylose differentiates A. pyogenes from Arcanobacterium haemolyticum, with which it has at times been confused. Actinomyces pyogenes is an established, but often misrecognized, human pathogen that should be better known to clinical microbiol

An unusual case of post-trauma polymicrobial cutaneous diphtheria.

We report a rare case of post-traumatic cutaneous diphtheria in a patient referred from a hospital in rural India. The diagnosis of cutaneous diphtheria was confirmed by the isolation of Corynebacterium diphtheriae cultured from the ulcer of the leg, along with Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Arcanobacterium haemolyticum. The patient was kept on isolation and treated with erythromycin for 14 days without antitoxin. He was discharged when his subsequent cultures turned out to be negative. Chemoprophylaxis was also given to his family members. Such a case highlights the revisi

Molecular characterisation of Mycoplasma species isolated from the genital tract of Dorper sheep in South Africa.

Biochemical and molecular analysis were conducted on 34 strains of Mycoplasma species isolated between 2003 and 2009 from the genital tract of clinically healthy Dorper sheep and sheep with ulcerative vulvitis and balanitis. Earlier publications identified the causative agent as Mycoplasma mycoides mycoides large colony (MmmLC) and Arcanobacterium pyogenes. The aims of the study were to characterise Mycoplasma species isolated from the genital tract of Dorper sheep with polymerase chain reaction assay, cloning and gene sequencing. Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) results revealed six

An investigation of the aetiological role of bovine herpesvirus 4 in bovine endometritis.

Uteri from 31 infertile cattle were examined for the presence of bovine herpesvirus 4 (BoHV-4) by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Samples were also tested for bacteria, including chlamydiae and Mycoplasma bovis. BoHV-4 was detected by PCR in 27/31 (87.1%) samples, but the presence and amount of viral DNA was not correlated with histological and bacteriological findings. Arcanobacterium pyogenes, Histophilus somni and Pasteurella multocida were isolated from five cows with endometritis. Chlamydiae were detected in four cases (12.9%), but only two of these had endometritis. The study doe
