Umbu-caja and soursop from the Northeast region of Brazil are rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds and are widely processed by the fruit agroindustry. However, there is a lack of research examining the composition and nutritional/technological potential of these co-product fruits. The present study evaluated the nutritional and technological characteristics of umbu-caja and soursop co-product flours (UCF and SCF, respectively), in addition to cytotoxicity in healthy cells. The results demonstrated that they are rich in dietary fiber (approximately 53 %), low in protein (approximately 8.0

Mauritia flexuosa Linnaeus filius (buriti or aguage; Arecaceae) is a palm used by traditional medicine in Brazil to treat dysentery and diarrhea. Our group showed that the soluble dichloromethane (CH2 Cl2 ) fraction from EtOH extract from M. flexuosa stems inhibited the growth of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and it is rich in phenolic compounds. This study aimed to isolate new phenolic compounds from CH2 Cl2 fraction from M. flexuosa stems with in vitro antibacterial activity. The crude CH2 Cl2 fraction was fractionated by gel

BACKGROUND: The large-scale clonal propagation of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) is being stalled by the occurrence of the mantled somaclonal variation. Indeed, this abnormality which presents a homeotic-like conversion of male floral organs into carpelloid structures, hampers oil production since the supernumerary female organs are either sterile or produce fruits with poor oil yields.
SCOPE: In the last 15 years, the prevailing point of view on the origin of the mantled floral phenotype has evolved from a random mutation event triggered by in vitro culture to a hormone-dependent dysfunction o

In the present study we report the chemical composition of the Cretan Phoenix theophrasti Gr. fruits, in comparison with dates, from its close relative Phoenix dactylifera L. for their nutritional value and their potential exploitation as a source of bioactive components such as phytosterols, lipids and polyphenols. The non polar dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) extract of the fruits was analysed by several techniques (TLC, CC, GC and GC-MS) and was found to consist mainly from fatty acids, hydrocarbons and phytosterols. Palmitic acid was the most abundant fatty acid, 12.49% of total saponifiables, wh

Understanding the difference in environmental impact between industrial and smallholder plantations is essential for sustainable oil palm plantation management. In this study, we quantified the loss of forest cover, biomass, peatland, protected area caused by industrial and smallholder plantations from 1990 to 2019. We also analyzed the relationship between environmental impact with plantation type and export price. Results showed that in each continent, the environmental impact caused by industrial plantations per unit area has been generally higher than that of smallholders in the history, b

Chagas disease, a neglected global health concern primarily transmitted through the bite and feces of kissing bugs, has garnered increasing attention due to recent outbreaks in northern Brazil, highlighting the role of oral transmission facilitated by the kissing bugs species Rhodnius robustus and Rhodnius pictipes. These vectors are associated with palm trees with large crowns, such as the maripa palm (Attalea maripa) and moriche palm (Mauritia flexuosa). In this study, we employ maximum entropy (MaxEnt) ecological niche models to analyze the spatial distribution of these vectors and palm spe

Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, known as the Red Palm Weevil (RPW), is reported as a pest of up to 40 palm species. However, the susceptibility degree and the defense mechanisms of these species against this weevil are still poorly known. In Europe, the RPW is a major pest of Phoenix canariensis while other palm species, including the congeneric Phoenix dactylifera, seem to be less suitable hosts for this insect. The aim of our study was to compare the defensive response of P. dactylifera, Chamaerops humilis and Washingtonia filifera against R. ferrugineus and try to define the mechanisms of resist

Dragon's blood is a common but non-specific name for red-coloured resins that are produced by various plants, particularly exudations from plant species belonging to the genera Dracaena and Daemonorops. Although dragon's blood is mentioned in historic sources as a colourant, it has hardly ever been identified in real artworks. This paper reports the identification and discrimination of dragon's blood produced by Dracaena cinnabari, Dracaena draco as well as Daemonorops draco and Daemonorops micracantha by means of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) within the context of a routine ana

The generation of SO2 from a refinery may affect the surrounding environment. Moreover, SO2 and its by-products are phytotoxic as berg. This study aims to investigate plant responses to SO2. The work has been designed with emphasis on using the plants directly in monitoring the contamination of the atmospheric air by SO2. An assessment was made of the impacts of long-term SO2 emissions from an oil refinery on plants located in nearby areas that are likely to be exposed to emission fallout. Three different plant species (Prosopis cineraria. Azadirachta indica, and Phoenix dactilifera) common to

Among 36 species of the genus Livistona (family Palmae or Arecaceae), L. carinensis is considered the only species native to Africa. Previous studies showed the richness of Livistona fruits in phenolic compounds. The goal of the current study was to investigate the phytochemical composition and assess the antiviral mechanisms of the L. carinensis leaves' ethanolic extract cultivated in Egypt for the first time. The ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF-MS/MS) was applied. Moreover, the total crude extract was fractionated using eth

BACKGROUND: Selection for camouflage coloration can lead to phenotypic convergence when closely-related taxa adapt to microhabitats with similar substrate color. Such convergence can, in turn, complicate species diagnosis - an issue of practical relevance when human-disease vectors are involved. Here, we present evidence suggesting that the Chagas disease vectors Rhodnius neglectus and R. nasutus may express similar, substrate-matching color phenotypes when they occupy Copernicia prunifera palms - the primary habitat of R. nasutus in northeastern Brazil.
METHODS: We studied triatomines from C

The main objective of this study was to assess cellulolytic probiotic strains from traditional fermented beverages such as palm wine in order to supplement the animal feed and strengthen the gut health of the animal for better digestibility and absorption. In the present study, different types of microbes were isolated from traditionally prepared palm wine and analyzed for their probiotic nature. For any microbe to be probiotic in nature, it has to sustain the harsh conditions of the human gastrointestinal tract such as acid tolerance, bile tolerance at the lower range of pH, and other propert

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, one of the most important neglected tropical diseases in the countries of Latin America, is considered to be a particularly important public health concern in the Amazon region due to increases in the number of outbreaks of acute Chagas disease and increased local transmission in the last 20 years. However, relative to other countries, in Bolivia there is little information available on its transmission in the Amazon region. The aim of this study was to investigate the infestation of palm trees, the main habitat of Triatominae in the region, in several localities, t

In the present work, two pretreatment techniques using either dilute acid (H2SO4) or dilute alkali (NaOH) have been compared for producing bioethanol from Empty Fruit Bunches (EFBs) from oil palm tree, a relevant feedstock for tropical countries. Treatments' performances under different conditions have been assessed and statistically optimized with respect to the response upon standardized enzymatic saccharification. The dilute acid treatment performed at optimal conditions (161.5°C, 9.44 min and 1.51% acid loading) gave 85.5% glucose yield, comparable to those of other commonly investigated f

Among the states that comprise the legally defined Amazon region of Brazil, Pará has presented the highest occurrences of acute cases of Chagas disease over the last two decades. These cases have been attributed to consumption of fruits from native palm trees. In surveys in rural and wild areas of the municipality of Oriximiná, Pará, triatomine fauna, their main ecotopes and the infection rate due to Trypanosoma cruzi were identified using active and passive search methods: manual capture and Noireau traps, respectively. A total of 582 ecotopes were surveyed using 1496 Noireau traps. Out of 44

The genus Butia (Arecaceae), native to southern South America, has attracted increasing scientific interest because of the nutritional composition, bioactive compounds, and technological potential of its fruits. This review critically examines the physicochemical composition, bioactive compounds, antioxidant capacity, biological effects, postharvest management, preservation strategies, and food applications of Butia pulp. Available evidence indicates that the pulp of different Butia species contains dietary fiber, minerals, phenolic compounds, carotenoids, vitamin C, and predominantly unsatura

Agricultural expansion is one of the main threats to global biodiversity. Yet, many wildlife species survive, and sometimes even thrive, in agricultural landscapes that retain patches of natural ecosystems. This paradox is evident in tropical oil palm (Elaeis guineensis, Jacq.) plantations that have both replaced tropical forest and other species-rich ecosystems, but can also function as wildlife habitat, especially if fragments of natural ecosystems are retained. There is an urgent need to understand how to manage and monitor wildlife in these landscapes. The lack of large, quantitative datas

BACKGROUND: Land-use change can influence parasite transmission by reshaping ecological interactions among parasites, vectors, and hosts. In particular, deforestation and agricultural expansion modify habitat structure and resource availability, potentially altering the prevalence and distribution of vector-borne diseases.
METHODS: Fieldwork was conducted on São Tomé Island (Gulf of Guinea, Central Africa) across a land-use gradient from the core of an oil palm plantation to adjacent native forest. Culicoides biting midges and birds were sampled across four habitat types (village, oil palm pl

Date palm, Phoenix dactylifera L. (Arecaceae), grows commonly in the Arabian Peninsula and is traditionally used to treat various diseases. The aim of the present study was to identify chemical composition of the essential oil and to investigate the repellent activity. The essential oil of P. dactylifera was obtained by hydrodistillation from the spathe, a specialized leaf structure that surrounds the pollinating organs of the palm. The oil was subsequently analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. The oil showed promising repellent activity against yellow fever mosquito - Aedes aegypti. Sixteen component

Rhodnius nasutus, a triatomine species autochthonous in the Brazilian Northeast, is primarily associated with the Copernicia prunifera palm tree (Carnauba). For the first time, the colonization of this triatomine in another tree species is reported. To investigate the existence of an infected triatomine focus located in a periurban area of the county of Jaguaruana, Ceará, situated in the Brazilian Northeast, where soil is greatly altered and natural vegetation scarce, an entomological survey was performed. During 2 consecutive days in August 2006 and 4 in December 2006, with the aid of live-ba
