Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, the causative agent of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), was first isolated from armadillos from the Amazonian region where the mycosis is uncommon. In the present study, we report on the high incidence of PCM infection in armadillos from a hyperendemic region of the disease. Four nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) were captured in the endemic area of Botucatu, Sao Paulo, Brazil, killed by manual cervical dislocation and autopsied under sterile conditions. Fragments of lung, spleen, liver, and mesenteric lymph nodes were processed for histology, cultured o

Six-banded armadillos (Euphractus sexcinctus), a non-endangered species, serve as a valuable experimental model for developing assisted reproductive technologies aimed at conserving endangered species within the order Cingulata. However, limited knowledge of their reproductive biology presents a critical challenge. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a pharmacological semen collection protocol and compare Karras-modified staining using brightfield microscopy (KA), phase contrast microscopy (PC), and differential interference contrast microscopy (DIC) for assessing sperm morpholog

Originally endemic to South America, the nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) has recently expanded its range northward to Illinois. With this range expansion comes concern regarding potential incoming pathogens; our research, conducted during 2012-2020, consisted of screening armadillos for the presence of helminths, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Mycobacterium leprae. We screened for the presence of T. cruzi and M. leprae, 2 pathogens known to infect humans, using polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. All 80 samples screened for T. cruzi and all 25 sa

A 70-year-old man from rural Colombia presented with new-onset atrial fibrillation, dyspnea, and palpitations. A peripheral blood smear revealed a Trypanosoma cruzi trypomastigote, which was confirmed by molecular testing. He reported ingesting armadillo blood 3 weeks earlier, identifying oral transmission as the likely route. Treatment with nifurtimox, oral metoprolol, and enoxaparin resulted in conversion to sinus rhythm and symptomatic improvement, although a parasitological cure could not be confirmed. Because the patient had several competing risk factors for atrial fibrillation-advanced

A six-banded armadillo (Euphractus sexcinctus) from a zoo collection in central California developed acute neurologic signs followed by death. Postmortem examination revealed multisystemic bacterial disease (fibrinosuppurative meningoencephalomyelitis, splenitis, and endocarditis) with fibrinous necrotizing vasculitis and thrombosis. Streptococcus gallinaceus was isolated from the heart, lung, and meninges. To our knowledge, this microorganism has not been reported previously in association with systemic disease in an armadillo. Although the source of infection remains unknown, the animal was

Euphractus sexcinctus is a wild mammal native to the Americas; they have great diversity and are not in danger of extinction like other armadillo species. Despite the diversity, the morphology of several biological systems of this species has not been fully described. This study details the gross and microscopic anatomy of the urinary system in Euphractus sexcinctus, a six-banded armadillo, compared with other mammalian study models. Six animals were dissected in the study. In the anatomical analysis, the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder and urethra were dissected and photographed; then, frag

Formation and subsequent break down of ovarian germ cell (GC) cysts is a key and an evolutionary-conserved developmental event, described in phylogenetically diverse species of invertebrates and vertebrates. In mammals, cyst break down (CBD) ends at the time of, or soon after, birth with the formation of primordial follicles enclosing single oocytes, which constitute the sole reservoir of gametes available through the whole female's reproductive life. In this study, we challenge this paradigm demonstrating the constitutive presence of a large number of cysts, enclosing two-thirty GCs, in the o

Armadillos, Xenarthras representatives, known for adaptability to different ecosystems, own specific morphophysiological characteristics that are not known and deserve to be studied. The aim of this study was to describe the morphology of cartilage of the larynx of the nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus). Five dead armadillos were donated by the Chico Mendes Institute of Biodiversity (ICMBio-PI) to the Federal University of Piauí. The animals were fixed and dissected for removal of the larynx. The cartilages were identified and described, photodocumented, and schematized. Fragments wi

Armadillos and anteaters usually interact with a wide range of ectoparasites and associated pathogens. Combined with their unique physiological and ecological characteristics, these interactions make them potential hosts for a diverse range of vector-borne agents (VBA). Despite this, relatively few studies have investigated the occurrence of VBA in mammals of the superorder Xenarthra in Brazil. The present study aimed to investigate the occurrence and phylogenetic assessment of filarioid nematodes in wild armadillos and anteaters sampled in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Central-Western Braz

Armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) were inoculated with Mycobacterium leprae isolated from lepromas taken from untreated lepromatous patients or from the spleen of an armadillo previously infected with human M. leprae. The effect of the infection on the serum levels of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), alkaline phosphatase (AlkP), glutamate-oxalacetate (GOT) and glutamate-pyruvate (GPT) transaminases was investigated. In general, there was a good correlation between positive evidences of infection and alterations in the levels of LDH, GOT, and GPT. Although elevations in LDH levels were more striking

A total of 20 specimens of Tolypeutes matacus (Desmarest, 1804) from the Chaco Region in Argentina were examined. This study revealed the presence of 3 species of the genus Mathevotaenia Akumyan, 1946 (Cestoda Anoplocephalidae), two of them new for science. These species are described, illustrated, and compared with related species. Mathevotaenia chamicalensis n. sp. is characterized by having a small body with 45-65 proglottids; a globose scolex, longer than wide and well delimited from strobila; a long neck; mature and gravid proglottids longer than wide; and 20-35 testes located in a single

Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and the related species P. americana, P. restrepiensis, P. venezuelensis, and P. lutzii (Ascomycota, Ajellomycetaceae) are the etiological agents of paracoccidoidoimycosis (PCM), one of the most important systemic mycoses in Latin America. They are dimorphic fungi, with a mycelial life cycle in soil and a yeast phase associated with tissues of mammalian hosts. This study aimed to detect Paracoccidioides spp. in armadillo tissues and associated soil samples in three well-defined geographic areas, including the Alta Floresta, an area not only endemic for PCM in the

Recent studies have established that the "naturally-occurring leprosy-like disease of wild armadillos" is, indeed, caused by Mycobacterium leprae indistinguishable from M. leprae from human lepromatous leprosy. The present study reports the ultrastructure of the mycobacteria and host response in deep viscera, liver and spleen, in Texas armadillos with sylvatic leprosy. Evidence for acid-fast bacillary proliferation in these organs and penetration of hepatocytes is given. Acid-fast bacilli concentrated in activated macrophages in Billroth cords and sheaths of Schweigger-Seidel of the spleen and

BACKGROUND: Hansen's disease (HD, leprosy) had a global incidence of approximately 200 000 new cases per annum over the last decade. Armadillos are recognized reservoirs of Mycobacterium leprae in the Americas and HD is considered a zoonosis in the USA. Our aim was to evaluate the association between armadillo meat consumption and HD in Brazil.
METHODS: We conducted a case-control study (n=59 patients with HD, n=59 controls) in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil, between February and December 2025. Data collected included clinical and sociodemographic, armadillo meat consumption and known (h

The vertebral column has evolved to accommodate the broad range of locomotor pressures found across vertebrate lineages. Xenarthran (armadillos, sloths and anteaters) vertebral columns are characterized by xenarthrous articulations, novel intervertebral articulations located in the posterior trunk that are hypothesized to stiffen the vertebral column to facilitate digging. To determine the degree to which xenarthrous articulations impact vertebral movement, we passively measured compliance and range of motion during ventroflexion, dorsiflexion and lateral bending across the thoracolumbar regio

The Xist gene belongs to the class of long noncoding regulatory RNA genes which play a key role in the process of inactivation of one of the X chromosomes in females of placental mammals. Based on interspecific comparative sequence analysis performed using a set ofbioinformatic programs and approaches, the exon-intron gene structure was first described in two species, elephant and armadillo, belonging to the most primitive placental mammal groups, Afrotheria and Xenarthra. Using multiple sequence alignment of the species representing all main groups of placental mammals (12 species), consensus

Twenty-seven nine-banded armadillos captured from the wild and tested free of wild M. leprae infection were distributed into four groups. They were injected at the right hind footpad with saline suspensions of M. Leprae at doses of 10(3), 10(4), 10(5) and 10(6). PGL-1 antibody levels were estimated using an ELISA test, twice during six months before the infection and every two months after the infection. One animal from each group was sacrificed at 6, 12, 18, 24, and 30-month intervals and another eight at unspecified intervals. A thorough autopsy and histopathological examination were conduct

Xenarthrans face increasing viral threats from anthropogenic pressures and domestic animals. In this study, we investigated the presence of coronaviruses, paramyxoviruses, and poxviruses in anteaters and armadillos from Brazilian biomes. We screened 236 individuals for these viruses by molecular methods. Canine distemper virus (CDV) was identified in four giant anteaters and one six-banded armadillo. A poxvirus, showing 88% sequence identity to molluscum contagiosum virus, was detected in one giant anteater. No coronaviruses were detected. These findings expand our knowledge on the host range
