Use of topical herbal remedies and cosmetics: a questionnaire-based investigation in dermatology out-patients.

BACKGROUND: Although topical remedies and cosmetics based on herbal ingredients are becoming increasingly popular with the public due to the perception that botanical compounds are safer and healthier than their synthetic counterparts, a large number of adverse cutaneous effects of plant extracts, notably contact sensitization, have been reported in medical literature. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of herbal compound usage in a dermatological out-patient population and to estimate the incidence of consequent cutaneous side-effects. METHODS: Four hundred patients were subjected to a s

Homeopathic treatment in emergency medicine: a case series.

Following a multiple-casualty construction disaster in Israel, members of The Center of Integrated Complementary Medicine joined in the emergency activity of the Shaare Zedek Medical Center. They administered homeopathic treatment to injured patients to supplement conventional orthopaedic treatment. This was to our knowledge the first time that complementary medicine had been used officially in conjunction with conventional medicine in an emergency situation. Our objective is to report and summarize the rationale, procedures and outcome of the complementary medicine intervention. Fifteen ortho

Evidence for the efficacy and safety of topical herbal drugs in dermatology: Part I: Anti-inflammatory agents.

Topical herbal drugs have for centuries been used for treating skin ailments. Although they are currently widely accepted by patients, their scientific esteem among dermatologists in particular is limited. A variety of herbal drugs for topical application deserves consideration regarding their widespread use or their still ill-defined potential with respect to their benefit/risk ratio. Clinically, camomile (Chamomilla recutita) and hamamelis preparations look particularly well documented. While the final proof of efficacy in common dermatoses such as atopic dermatitis is still lacking, there i

Practical survey on the use of herbal medicine by patients with systemic sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Systemic scleroderma (SSc) is a rare disease with no aetiological treatment. In this context, and with the development of alternative or complementary medicine, patients may be tempted to use therapies that have not been scientifically evaluated. METHOD: The aim was to carry out a one-off survey of phytotherapy practices among SSc patients. RESULTS: Out of 33 patients, 23 responded to the questionnaire, 8 said they used complementary medicines (yoga, acupuncture, etc.). Nine patients reported using phytotherapy (4 essential oils, 1 herbal tea, 2 Bach flowers, 3 vegetable oils,

Editor's note: From its first issue in 1900 through to the present day, AJN has unparalleled archives detailing nurses' work and lives over more than a century. These articles not only chronicle nursing's growth as a profession within the context of the events of the day, but they also reveal prevailing societal attitudes about women, health care, and human rights. Today's nursing school curricula rarely include nursing's history, but it's a history worth knowing. To this end, From the AJN Archives highlights articles selected to fit today's topics and times. In this month's article, from the M

Ethnopharmacobotanical investigation of plants used for respiratory disorders in Transylvania, Romania.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory disorders remain a significant public‑health concern across Europe, and traditional ethnomedical knowledge continues to play an important role in several Transylvanian communities. This study aims to document the plant species applied for respiratory conditions in Transylvania and to evaluate whether their uses are supported by current pharmacological evidence. By systematically mapping vernacular practices and comparing them with available biomedical data, we seek to clarify the therapeutic relevance and potential scientific grounding of these traditional remedies.

Calea uniflora Less. attenuates the inflammatory response to carrageenan-induced pleurisy in mice.

Calea uniflora Less. (family Asteraceae), also named "arnica" and "erva-de-lagarto", is a native plant to the South and Southeast of Brazil. This species was used to treat rheumatism, respiratory diseases, and digestive problems in Brazilian folk medicine. In vitro studies have shown the important biological effects of C. uniflora. However no studies have focused on the mechanism of action of anti-inflammatory activity of C. uniflora. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of the crude extract, its fractions, and isolated compounds obtained from of C. uniflora, usi

Safety implications regarding use of phytomedicines.

OBJECTIVE: Since the approach of the general population to phytomedicine is that the therapy therapy is natural and therefore safe, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the use of herbal compounds, alone or in combination with traditional drugs, and the appearance of side-effects among a sample of Italian women. METHODS: Our research was conducted over a 5-month period in the outpatient ambulatories of an urban university general hospital. The sample population consisted of women who were interviewed about phytotherapy use on the basis of a pre-structured question

Umbilical cord stump medication with a topical dermo protective powder compared to dry care in healthy full-term and near-term newborns: a two-center prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Proper umbilical cord stump care during the first days of life (both in hospital and at home) should not be overlooked to prevent possible complications (e.g., purulent discharge, granulomas, or periumbilical erythema or omphalitis). Despite the known benefits of its correct execution, the care of umbilical cord stump remains controversial, and many different approaches are described. The World Health Organization suggests the use of dry cord stump care (easy and economic technique) in developed countries, but in many cases in the real life various topical antiseptics are used in c

Spectroscopic investigation of hydrogen bond network stability and microplastic leaching in ethanol-based potentised medicines at extreme dilutions during prolonged plastic storage.

The quality and efficacy of pharmaceutical products stored under proper conditions are critical. This study examined the effects of long-term plastic storage on extremely diluted ethanol-based potentised (EP) medicines using advanced spectroscopic techniques. Four medicines, Arnica montana, Rhus toxicodendron, Conium maculatum, and Belladonna, at ultra-high (200C, 1 M) and moderate-high (30C, 200C) potencies, were stored in glass and plastic containers for one month. Post-storage, antioxidant activity (DPPH assay), pH, and spectroscopic analyses (ATR-FTIR, Raman and DLS) were conducted. Glass-

Herbal medicine for low-back pain.

BACKGROUND: Low-back pain (LBP) is a common condition and imposes a substantial economic burden upon people living in industrialized societies. A large proportion of people with chronic LBP use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), visit CAM practitioners, or both. Several herbal medicines have been purported for use in treating people with LBP. This is an update of a Cochrane Review first published in 2006. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of herbal medicine for non-specific LBP. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the following electronic databases up to September 2014: MEDLINE,

The use of homeopathic products in childhood: data generated over 8.5 years from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC).

BACKGROUND: Very little is known about the use of homeopathic products (HP) in children. The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), a population-based cohort in the South-West of England, has collected homeopathic data through self-completion questionnaires posted to the mother at regular time points throughout childhood. The aim of this article is to describe the use of these products in a large cohort of children from birth to 8.5 years of age. METHODS: Questions asked about the use of HP within a preceding time period at seven time points from birth to 8.5 years of age.

Relating skin sensitizing potency to chemical reactivity: reactive Michael acceptors inhibit NF-κB signaling and are less sensitizing than S(N)Ar- and S(N)2- reactive chemicals.

The skin sensitization potency of chemicals is partly related to their reactivity to proteins. This can be quantified as the rate constant of the reaction with a model peptide, and a kinetic profiling approach to determine rate constants was previously proposed. A linear relationship between the skin sensitization potency in the local lymph node assay (LLNA) and the rate constant for Michael acceptors was reported, characterized by a relatively flat regression line. Thus, a 10-fold increase of reactivity correlates to an increase of the sensitization potential of only 1.7-fold. Here, we first

Ethnoveterinary medicines used for ruminants in British Columbia, Canada.

BACKGROUND: The use of medicinal plants is an option for livestock farmers who are not allowed to use allopathic drugs under certified organic programs or cannot afford to use allopathic drugs for minor health problems of livestock. METHODS: In 2003 we conducted semi-structured interviews with 60 participants obtained using a purposive sample. Medicinal plants are used to treat a range of conditions. A draft manual prepared from the data was then evaluated by participants at a participatory workshop. RESULTS: There are 128 plants used for ruminant health and diets, representing several plant

In vitro and in vivo analysis of pro- and anti-inflammatory effects of weak and strong contact allergens.

Inflammation is a crucial step in the development of allergic contact dermatitis. The primary contact with chemical allergens, called sensitization, and the secondary contact, called elicitation, result in an inflammatory response in the skin. The ability of contact allergens to induce allergic contact dermatitis correlates to a great extent with their inflammatory potential. Therefore, the analysis of the sensitizing potential of a putative contact allergen should include the examination of its ability and potency to cause an inflammation. In this study, we examined the inflammatory potential
