Comparative effects of the two copper compounds: Copper chloride and copper sulfate on bioaccumulation, fecundity, and stress responses in the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana.

To evaluate the toxicological impacts of the two copper formscopper chloride (CuCl₂) and copper sulfate (CuSO4), on the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana, we examined the bioaccumulation, life cycle parameters (survival and hatching rates), reactive oxygen species (ROS), antioxidant enzymatic activities (e.g., glutathione S-transferase [GST], glutathione peroxidase [GPx], and superoxide dismutase [SOD]) with transcriptional expression of heat shock protein (hsp) genes in response to CuCl₂ and CuSO4. Higher accumulation rates of CuCl₂ and CuSO4 were observed in concentration- and time-dependent

Lethal, behavioral, growth and developmental toxicities of alkyl-PAHs and non-alkyl PAHs to early-life stage of brine shrimp, Artemia parthenogenetica.

Alkyl-PAHs are the predominant form of PAHs in crude oils which are supposed to demonstrate different toxicities compared to non-alkyl PAHs. Little information is available about the toxicity of alkyl-PAHs on marine Artemia. This study addressed and compared the lethal, behavioral, growth and developmental toxicities of three alkyl-PAHs, namely 3-methyl phenanthrene (3-mPhe), retene (Ret) and 2-methyl anthracene (2-mAnt), to their non-alkyl forms, phenanthrene (Phe) and anthracene (Ant) using Artemia parthenogenetica (nauplii, <24 h) as test organism following a 48 h and a 7 d of exposure, res

Experimental vertical transmission of Macrobrachium rosenbergii nodavirus (MrNV) and extra small virus (XSV) from brooders to progeny in Macrobrachium rosenbergii and Artemia.

White tail disease (WTD) is a serious problem in hatcheries and nursery ponds of Macrobrachium rosenbergii in India. Experiments were carried out to determine the possibility of vertical transmission of M. rosenbergii nodavirus (MrNV) and extra small virus (XSV) in M. rosenbergii and Artemia. Prawn broodstock inoculated with MrNV and XSV by oral or immersion challenge survived without any clinical signs of WTD. The brooders spawned 5-7 days after inoculation and the eggs hatched. The survival rate of larvae gradually decreased, and 100% mortality was observed at the post-larvae (PL) stage. Whi

Toxic Effects of Dietary and Waterborne PCB-153 on Survival, Growth, Grazing, and Physiological Responses in Artemia salina Using an Intermittent Exposure Approach.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), as ubiquitous persistent organic pollutants (POPs), pose substantial threats to the physiological and ecological homeostasis of aquatic organisms. To minimize cross-contamination and better simulate fluctuating pollutant exposure dynamics in natural aquatic ecosystems, an intermittent exposure regime was employed in this study. This study investigated the effects of PCB-153 (2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl) on growth, ingestion, and the antioxidant-detoxification system in Artemia via dietary (4:20 stress:non-stress, 4 days) and waterborne (22:2 stress:non-s

On how titanium dioxide nanoparticles attenuate the toxicity of mercuric chloride to Artemia salina: investigation of fatty acid composition, oxidative stress, and lipid peroxidation.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) as an emerging pollutant in aquatic environments can interact with metals reducing or enhancing their toxicity in these environments. This study examined and compared the toxic effects of mercury ions (Hg2+ ions) on immobilization percentage, fatty acid profile, and oxidative stress of Artemia salina nauplii, individually (Hg) and simultaneously in the presence of 0.10 mg.L-1 (Hg-0.1TiO2NPs) and 1.00 mg.L-1 TiO2NPs (Hg-1TiO2NPs). The interaction between Hg2+ ions and TiO2NPs was evaluated using DLS and AAS-VGA. Simultaneous exposures exhibited an unexpe

Environmental risks and cytotoxic effects of the organophosphorus flame-retardant tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) on aquatic organisms: An assessment using the Artemia model.

Tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) is a widespread chlorinated organophosphate flame retardant, yet its biological impacts on saline aquatic biota remain largely undefined. Using the brine shrimp Artemia parthenogenetica, we examined TCEP toxicity across a concentration spectrum from environmentally relevant (2 µg/L) to acutely lethal levels (48-h LC₅₀ = 641.3 mg/L, 95% CI: 603.5-686.1 mg/L), revealing exceptional native tolerance. At 2 µg/L, no teratogenicity or oxidative damage occurred, though glutathione S-transferase (GST) detoxification genes GstS1 and GstO1 were transcriptionally ind

Helminth parasites of Artemia franciscana (Crustacea: Branchiopoda) in the Great Salt Lake, Utah: first data from the native range of this invader of European wetlands.

The present study is the first survey on the role of Artemia franciscana Kellogg as intermediate host of helminth parasites in its native geographical range in North America (previous studies have recorded nine cestode and one nematode species from this host in its invasive habitats in the Western Mediterranean). Samples of Artemia franciscana were collected from four sites in the Great Salt Lake (GSL), Utah, across several months (June-September 2009). A. franciscana serves as intermediate host of five helminth species in this lake. Four of them are cestodes: three hymenolepidids, i.e. Conflu

A functional comparison of the venom of three Australian jellyfish--Chironex fleckeri, Chiropsalmus sp., and Carybdea xaymacana--on cytosolic Ca2+, haemolysis and Artemia sp. lethality.

Cnidarian venoms produce a wide spectrum of envenoming syndromes in humans ranging from minor local irritation to death. Here, the effects of Chironex fleckeri, Chiropsalmus sp., and Carybdea xaymacana venoms on ventricular myocyte cytosolic Ca2+, haemolysis and Artemia sp. lethality are compared for the first time. All three venoms caused a large, irreversible elevation of cytosolic Ca2+ in myocytes as measured using the Ca2+ sensitive fluorescent probe Indo-1. The L-type Ca2+ channel antagonist verapamil had no effect on Ca2+ influx whilst La3+, a non-specific channel and pore blocker, inhib

Effect of Bauhinia monandra Kurz Leaf Preparations on Embryonic Stages and Adult Snails of Biomphalaria glabrata (Say, 1818), Schistosoma mansoni Cercariae and Toxicity in Artemia salina.

Biomphalaria glabrata snails constitute the main vector of schistosomiasis in Brazil, and Bauhinia monandra Kurz, the leaves of which contain BmoLL lectin with biocidal action, is a plant widely found on continents in which the disease is endemic. This work describes the composition of B. monandra preparations and the effect on embryos and adult snails, their reproduction parameters and hemocytes. We also describe the results of a comet assay after B. glabrata exposure to sublethal concentrations of the preparations. Additionally, the effects of the preparations on S. mansoni cercariae and env

Determination of 54 pesticides in waters of the Iberian Douro River estuary and risk assessment of environmentally relevant mixtures using theoretical approaches and Artemia salina and Daphnia magna bioassays.

As a case study, the estuary of the international Douro River (Iberian Peninsula) was sampled over a year (2010) at six sampling sites to determine the presence of 56 pesticides of different categories (insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides). 96% of measured pesticides were detected in 79% of the quantified samples. Individual average pesticide concentrations ranged from 39 to 1 265ng/L, indicating a ubiquitous presence of the selected compounds; moreover, twelve pesticides were above the 2013/39/EU Directive limits. Due to its highly impacted profile, a theoretical hazard assessment was do

Exploring parasites in extreme environments of high conservational importance: Artemia franciscana (Crustacea: Branchiopoda) as intermediate host of avian cestodes in Andean hypersaline lagoons from Salar de Atacama, Chile.

The hypersaline lagoons located in evaporation basins or salars (salt flats) in the Atacama Desert are extreme environments harbouring a specialised biota able to survive harsh conditions for life. The knowledge of the parasitic biodiversity of these extreme habitats is still scarce despite their functional importance in regulating relevant non-economic services like habitats of waterbirds. The present study is the first report on the cestode infection of Artemia franciscana Kellogg in Salar de Atacama lagoons in northern Chile. A total of 23 parasite larvae were isolated and identified as bel

Methanolic Extract of Artemia salina Eggs and Various Fractions in Different Solvents Contain Potent Compounds That Decrease Cell Viability of Colon and Skin Cancer Cell Lines and Show Antibacterial Activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Artemia salina, crustaceans of class Branchiopoda and order Anostraca, are living and reproducing only in highly saline natural lakes and in other reservoirs where sea water is evaporated to produce salt. Artemia salina eggs can be purchased from pet stores, where they are sold as tropical fish food and a ready source for hatching shrimp. In the current study, methanolic crude extracts and various fractions of Artemia salina eggs extracted in other solvents were tested for effects on cell viability of human colorectal cancer cells (HCT116) and melanoma cells (B16F10) using an MTT (3-(4,5-dimet

Functional Role of Native and Invasive Filter-Feeders, and the Effect of Parasites: Learning from Hypersaline Ecosystems.

Filter-feeding organisms are often keystone species with a major influence on the dynamics of aquatic ecosystems. Studies of filtering rates in such taxa are therefore vital in order to understand ecosystem functioning and the impact of natural and anthropogenic stressors such as parasites, climate warming and invasive species. Brine shrimps Artemia spp. are the dominant grazers in hypersaline systems and are a good example of such keystone taxa. Hypersaline ecosystems are relatively simplified environments compared with much more complex freshwater and marine ecosystems, making them suitable

An updated and detailed taxonomical account of the large Branchiopoda (Crustacea: Branchiopoda: Anostraca, Notostraca, Spinicaudata) from the Yale North India Expedition deposited in the Yale Peabody Natural History Museum.

We present an updated taxonomic account of a few of the large branchiopod species present in the collections of the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History. Our study shows that the Artemia species in the collections is not Artemia salina given the presence of spines at the base of the penis and its frontal knob morphology. This population cannot be assigned to any particular species due to lack of comparative material of other Artemia species and therefore, now reduces the authentic distribution record of Artemia salina to just one in the subcontinent. The morphology of eggs taken from the Str

Evaluating the Impact of Spinach Supplementation in Enhancing the Growth of Blue Swimming Crab Larvae, Portunus pelagicus.

Blue swimming crabs (Portunus pelagicus) consistently command higher prices in domestic and global markets due to elevated demand. Due to the rising issue of low crab larvae survival, farmers have begun using artificial hormones to increase survival rates and ensure hatchery production aligns with market demands. However, the outcomes of using artificial hormones are concerning, as these compounds pose serious risks to aquatic organisms, humans, and the environment. To address the harmful effects of artificial hormones, efforts are now focused on identifying affordable and eco-friendly plant-b

Laboratory assessment of divaricatic acid against Biomphalaria glabrata and Schistosoma mansoni cercariae.

In this study, the molluscicidal and antiparasitic activities of divaricatic acid was evaluated, targeting the mollusc Biomphalaria glabrata and cercariae of the helminth Schistosoma mansoni. In addition, the environmental toxicity of divaricatic acid was assessed by bioassay using the microcrustacean Artemia salina. Divaricatic acid showed high toxicity against both adult snails (5μg/mL) and embryos (20μg/mL after 6h of exposure). Similar activity was observed in Schistosoma mansoni cercariae after only a short exposure time (10μg/mL after 30min of exposure). The divaricatic acid did not show

Effects of proposed physical ballast tank treatments on aquatic invertebrate resting eggs.

Adaptations in aquatic invertebrate resting eggs that confer protection from natural catastrophic events also could confer protection from treatments applied to ballast water for biological invasion vector management. To evaluate the potential efficacy of physical ballast water treatment methods, the present study examined the acute toxicity of heat (flash and holding methods), ultraviolet (UV) radiation (254 nm), and deoxygenation (acute and chronic) on resting eggs of the freshwater cladoceran Daphnia mendotae and the marine brine shrimp Artemia sp. Both D. mendotae and Artemia sp. were simi

Feeding Larval Zebrafish: Small Predators, Big Choices.

Zebrafish husbandry regimens often use live rotifers or paramecia during the first 2 weeks of larval feeding. The rationale is that the small larval gape requires suitably small prey. As larvae grow, they are transitioned to feeding on larger prey in the form of brine shrimp (Artemia). Typically, the Artemia used are the San Francisco Bay (SFB) strain. This strain is reported to be smaller than the Great Salt Lake (GSL) strain and is presumably easier for larvae to capture. Here, we tested the ability of zebrafish larvae to capture either strain. Daily, from 5 to 15 days post-fertilization (dp
