Research on stimulability is explored and evaluated. Application of the concept of stimulability as a prognostic indicator is suggested for use in the evaluation of children who have phonological disorders. A framework for dynamic assessment, based on Vygotsky's principles and theory, is proposed as having clinical utility for determining a child's potential for learning, identifying factors that may influence the child's learning, and identifying factors that may facilitate the child's development or functioning. Eight factors are identified that may serve as antecedent cues to facilitate a c

UNLABELLED: Speech disorder that continues into middle childhood is rarely studied compared with speech disorder in the early years. Speech production in single words, connected speech and nonword repetition was assessed for 7390 eight-year-old children within the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). The majority (n=6399) had typical speech and 50 of these children served as controls. The remainder were categorised as using common clinical distortions only (CCD, n=582) or speech difficulties (SDiff, n=409). The samples from the CCD children were not analysed further. Speec

Neurodegenerative pathologies as Parkinson's Disease (PD) show important distortions in speech, affecting fluency, prosody, articulation and phonation. Classically, measurements based on articulation gestures altering formant positions, as the Vocal Space Area (VSA) or the Formant Centralization Ratio (FCR) have been proposed to measure speech distortion, but these markers are based mainly on static positions of sustained vowels. The present study introduces a measurement based on the mutual information distance among probability density functions of kinematic correlates derived from formant d

The purpose of this study is to describe the speech characteristics in an English-speaking Ugandan boy of 4.5 years who has a rare paramedian craniofacial cleft (unilateral lip, alveolar, palatal, nasal and maxillary cleft, and associated hypertelorism). Closure of the lip together with the closure of the hard and soft palate (one-stage palatal closure) was performed at the age of 5 months. Objective as well as subjective speech assessment techniques were used. The speech samples were perceptually judged for articulation, intelligibility and nasality. The Nasometer was used for the objective m

The article comprises the proposal made by the Cleft Palate Committee of IALP to standardize the parameters of the speech and hearing evaluation in individuals with cleft palate/velopharyngeal incompetence (CP/VPI). The suggested parameters are the following: nasal resonance, nasal escape, articulation and its disorders, facial grimacing, speech intelligibility, patient teachability, expressive language and voice. The authors recommend a five-point scale description system, which can be used also for assessment of hearing, velopharyngeal competence and other attributes of the CP/VPI individual

Stammering as a frequent speech disorder in infancy results from many causes. For instance, it is possible that a child with normal peripheral hearing may be unable to distinguish sounds by tone and therefore will repeat them incorrectly. A testing method is presented in which paired pictures are used which differ by the phonologic opposition of some stammered sounds. The results of the test in 100 children who stammer are reported. Further investigations give evidence that other perceptual disorders can be found in supposed agnosias.

Acoustic methods have progressed to the point that an acoustic typology of the motor speech disorders can be constructed from a parameteric assessment of the speech subsystems (e.g., phonation, nasal resonance, vowel articulation, consonant articulation, intonation, and rhythm). The results of this analysis can be interpreted in respect to global functions in speech (e.g., voice quality, intelligibility, and prosody). This paper reviews studies showing that specific acoustic analyses have demonstrated or potential value toward the overall goal of constructing acoustic profiles of dysarthria an

For some years the dystonias have been the subject of major studies and, as far as the generalised dystonias are concerned, of major therapeutic advances. The opposite is true of the so-called focal or functional dystonias, which include conditions such as Meige's syndrome, spasmodic torticollis, writer's cramp, dystonias using instruments especially in musicians, and spasmodic dysphonia. For the last group, the term functional dysphonia would seems to us to be more appropriate. It would appear that what is involved is a disorder not of a muscle group, but rather of a function. Consequently st

Assessment of intelligibility is required to characterize the overall speech production capability and to measure the speech outcome of different interventions for individuals with cleft lip and palate (CLP). Researchers have found that articulation error and hypernasality have a significant effect on the degradation of CLP speech intelligibility. Motivated by this finding, the present work proposes an objective measure of sentence-level intelligibility by combining the information of articulation deficits and hypernasality. These two speech disorders represent different aspects of CLP speech.

This study had the aim to analyze both the phonological changes and the generalization obtained in the treatment with rothics in two models of phonological treatment. The sample consisted of four subjects diagnosed with phonological disorder, with ages between four and six years. All of them were assessed before and after the phonological therapy. Two groups were established for the treatment with rothics. One group was treated with ABAB - Withdrawal and Multiple Probes Model, and the other group with the Maximal Opposition Model. The phonological system and the occurrence of generalizations b

This study examined the effects of orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) on speech intelligibility in adults with persistent articulation impairments. Six adults in the age range of 18-23 years were selected to receive orofacial myofunctional therapy for a period of six weeks. The results showed that five out of six clients made significant progress in oral postures and speech sound production across all three speech production tasks: single words, sentences, and spontaneous speech. Speech intelligibility increased significantly in all clients except the one diagnosed with developmental apraxi

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore how 7-year-olds describe speech in children born with cleft palate in their own words and to investigate whether they perceive signs of velopharyngeal incompetence (VPI) and articulation errors, and if so, which terminology they use.
METHODS/PARTICIPANTS: Twenty 7-year-olds participated in 6 focus group interviews where they listened to 8 speech samples with different types of cleft speech characteristics and described what they heard. The same speech samples had been assessed by speech-language pathologists and comprised normal speech, differen

An anatomic-pathologic-radiographic study of the proximal tibiofibular joint was undertaken. This synovial articulation between the proximal tibia and fibula may communicate with the knee joint in 10% of adults. Radiography of the normal proximal tibiofibular articulation outlines a consistent relationship between the proximal portions of the tibia and fibula. Disruption of this normal relationship is indicative of anterolateral or posteromedial subluxation or dislocation. Articular disorders of this joint include reheumatoid arthritis and septic arthritis. In the latter, initial alterations o

The Multiple Oppositions Approach is described as an alternative model for the treatment of children with the severe phonological disorders. The aim of this study was to analyze the therapeutic progress of five children with phonological disorder, submitted to the Multiple Oppositions Approach, regarding the phonetic (sounds) and phonological (phonemes and altered distinctive features) inventories. Participants were five children with phonological disorder, with mean age of 6 years and 1 month. Speech data were collected through phonological assessment, and the Multiple Oppositions Approach wa

These cases reports describe the rationale and procedures for structuring an articulation therapy program on the basis of distinctive feature analysis of the child's articulation problems. Results of the speech therapy program described in these case reports illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of using distinctive feature analysis to structure and guide articulation therapy. The report further points out that a therapist need not greatly alter the traditional approach to utilize distinctive feature analysis as an integral part of the overall articulation therapy program.

OBJECTIVES: Mobile applications are becoming essential for speech therapy, especially in areas with limited access to professional speech therapists. This technological intervention is especially pertinent during pandemics, which further restrict access to traditional therapeutic modalities. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a mobile application for articulation therapy, specifically designed for pediatric patients with articulation disorders associated with cleft palate.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The articulation exercises incorporated in the application encompassed 27 Thai

This study aims to investigate variations in electrical impedance phase angle due to tongue-palate contact strength induced by different articulation manners. Unlike previous research focusing on pathological conditions, this study examined healthy participants, analyzing impedance phase variations across articulation manners (plain, tense, aspirated) and positions (alveolar, alveolar-post, velar). Tongue pressure, surface electromyography (sEMG), and acoustic features (F2 slope) were simultaneously recorded during articulation tasks, allowing a multidimensional analysis. Six healthy adults (f
