Bacterial epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance in ascitic fluid: a 2-year retrospective study.

The bacterial epidemiology of bacterascites and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is evolving. Four hundred and eleven strains isolated from ascites in cirrhotic patients from 5 French hospitals were isolated in 2006 and 2007. Of these, 114 were definitely associated with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. The proportion of Gram-positive and Gram-negative agents was quite similar, even after excluding coagulase-negative staphylococci, or when considering only definite spontaneous bacterial peritonitis or community-acquired strains. Staphylococci and Escherichia coli were the most frequent path

Antigens and antibodies in the ascitic fluid of mice infected with Fasciola gigantica.

Fluke antigens were detected in the ascitic fluid of mice infected with Fasciola gigantica. The precipitating antibodies reactive against the antigens from metacercariae were detected as early as 2 weeks after the infection, and those against the adult and immature worms appeared 3 and 4 weeks later.

Microfilaria and Strongyloides larva diagnosed in cerebrospinal fluid and ascitic fluid, respectively: Approach to their morphology on cytology.

Filariasis and Strongyloidiasis are two endemic parasitic infections seen in any tropical country. Filariasis, commonly caused by Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori is seen often in peripheral blood and lymphoid tissue. But it can be isolated from wide variety of soft tissue sites in the body like soft tissue lumps, breast, thyroid, body fluids. Strongyloides stercoralis, a helminthic infection, usually affects the respiratory and gastrointestinal (GI) tract, and frequently picked up in GI biopsies. However, in cases of hyper infection and patients with altered immunity, it

Bugs' eyes and black monsters: Ascitic fluid cytology in an elderly male with hematochezia.

Anorectal malignant melanomas are rare, accounting for less than 2% of all melanomas. Malignant effusions developing secondary to malignant melanoma are highly uncommon. Herein, we present the cytomorphological features of a metastatic anorectal malignant melanoma presenting with ascites at the initial clinical presentation.

Missed bladder rupture following vaginal delivery: Possible role of assessing ascitic fluid creatinine levels?

Bladder injury is the most common urological trauma following the gynecological procedure. Normal vaginal delivery candidates with unresponsive and prolonged ascites and bladder-emptying complaints should be examined for bladder rupture. We also suggest measurement of ascitic fluid creatinine levels in these patients.

Ascitic fluid polymorphic nuclear cell count impacts on outcome of cirrhotic patients with ascites.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is defined as an ascitic polymorphonuclear cell count (A-PMN) > 250 cells/µl. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the prognostic value of ascitic fluid cell counts in patients without SBP. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 178 patients were included and stratified by ascitic cell counts at index paracentesis: A-LEUK-low (<250/µl), A-LEUK-intermediate (250-500/µl) and A-LEUK-SBP (>500/µl) for leukocytes; A-PMN-low (<125/µl), A-PMN-intermediate (125-250/µl) and A-PMN-SBP (>250/µl) for PMN cells. RESULTS: One-year mortality was comparable betwe

Sialyl Lewisx-P-selectin cascade mediates tumor-mesothelial adhesion in ascitic fluid shear flow.

Organ-specific colonization suggests that specific cell-cell recognition is essential. Yet, very little is known about this particular interaction. Moreover, tumor cell lodgement requires binding under shear stress, but not static, conditions. Here, we successfully isolate the metastatic populations of cancer stem/tumor-initiating cells (M-CSCs). We show that the M-CSCs tether more and roll slower than the non-metastatic (NM)-CSCs, thus resulting in the preferential binding to the peritoneal mesothelium under ascitic fluid shear stress. Mechanistically, this interaction is mediated by P-select

Cytomorphological and immunocytochemical study of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in pleural effusion and ascitic fluid.

INTRODUCTION: Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is often complicated by pleural effusion and ascites. The present study is an attempt to categorize the lymphomatous effusions according to the WHO classification, using archival material. METHODS: May-Grünwald-Giemsa and Papanicolaou-stained smears of 31 lymphomatous effusion specimens were reviewed. Of these, detailed cytological assessment was done on 12 pleural effusions and ten ascitic fluid specimens from 22 patients using the WHO lymphoma classification system. Immunocytochemical studies were performed in 21 specimens. RESULTS: Based on cytom

Nocardia veterana isolated from ascitic fluid of a patient with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Nocardia veterana is a recently characterized species within the genus Nocardia, and only three human clinical isolates have been reported for this species. We describe a case of ascitic fluid infection in an immunocompromised patient due to N. veterana. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a Nocardia sp. strain from ascitic fluid and the fourth report of N. veterana isolated from human samples. Chemotaxonomic methods showed the strain to belong to the genus Nocardia, and identification to the species level was done by 16S ribosomal DNA gene sequencing. The antibiotic susceptibility p

The Diagnostic Role of Tumor and Inflammatory Biomarkers in Ascitic Fluid: A Systematic Review.

Background and Objectives: Diagnosing the underlying cause of ascites remains complex, especially when cytology results are inconclusive. Measuring biomarkers directly in ascitic fluid may offer better diagnostic insight than serum testing alone. This review evaluated the clinical utility of tumor and inflammatory markers in ascitic fluid. Materials and Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed and Scopus for studies published from January 2014 to December 2024, with the final search carried out in May 2025. The included studies were observational, comparative or biomarker validatio

Distinctive features of blood- and ascitic fluid-derived extracellular vesicles in ovarian cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer (OC) is a highly aggressive malignancy characterized by early dissemination of cancer cells from the surface of the ovary to the peritoneum. To gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms associated with this intraperitoneal spread, we aimed to characterize the role of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in metastatic colonization in OC. METHODS: To this purpose, a total of 150 samples of ascitic fluids, blood serum, tumor and normal tissues from 60 OC patients, were extensively analyzed to characterize the EVs released in blood and ascitic fluids of OC patients, in term

[Usefulness of Ascitic Fluid Analysis for Diagnosis of Intraperitoneal Bladder Rupture : A Case Report].

An inebriated 58-year-old woman with a history of hysterectomy presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain. The patient received hydration and acetaminophen, which led to symptom resolution. The patient returned with severe abdominal pain, 12 hours later. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a large volume of ascites and bladder wall disruption. Ascitic fluid analysis showed an elevated creatinine (Cre) level of 7.56 mg/dl, and the ascites to serum Cre ratio was 2.96, which indicated urinary ascites secondary to bladder rupture. The patient was diagnosed with intraperitoneal bladder

Extracellular vesicles derived from ascitic fluid enhance growth and migration of ovarian cancer cells.

Ovarian cancer is associated with a high mortality rate due to diagnosis at advanced stages. Dissemination often occurs intraperitoneally within the ascites fluid. The microenvironment can support dissemination through several mechanisms. One potential ascites factor which may mediate dissemination are EVs or extracellular vesicles that can carry information in the form of miRNAs, proteins, lipids, and act as mediators of cellular communication. We present our observations on EVs isolated from ascitic supernatants from patients diagnosed with high grade serous ovarian carcinoma in augmenting m

Copper content in ascitic fluid is associated with angiogenesis and progression in ovarian cancer.

BACKGROUND: Ascites is associated with the poor prognosis of malignant tumors. The biological importance of the changes in the content of trace elements in the ascitic fluid is unknown. Herein, we analyzed trace elements in the ascitic fluid of patients with ovarian tumors and used cultured cells to determine the copper (Cu)-induced changes in gene expression in ovarian cancer. METHODS: Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to compare ascitic fluid trace element levels in patients with benign ovarian tumors (n = 22) and borderline/malignant tumors (n = 5) for primary

Ascitic fluid infection in children with liver disease: time to change empirical antibiotic policy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Recent years have shown a rise in occurrence of multidrug resistant ascitic fluid infection (AFI) including resistant to third generation cephalosporins. Our aim was to find the prevalence, antibiotics resistance and outcome of AFI in children with liver disease. METHODS: Children (≤ 18 years) with liver disease-related ascites were prospectively enrolled from April 2015 to October 2017. Based on the results of ascitic fluid examination and culture, patients were classified as having AFI [spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP), culture negative neutrocytic ascites (CNNA)
