Benchmarking female breast cancer survival in africa, Central and South america, and asia (SURVCAN-3).

BACKGROUND: In limited-resource settings with high cancer mortality, conditional survival which is the probability of surviving given on survival after a certain period of time since diagnosis, can provide a patient-centred and clinically relevant prognosis indicator. We aimed to benchmark breast cancer prognosis using conditional survival estimates in Africa, Central and South America, and Asia. METHODS: We included data for 197,766 females with breast cancer diagnosed in 2008-2012, from 53 population-based cancer registries with at least 3 years of follow-up across 22 countries. We estimate

Long-Term Epidemiological Trends and Regional Disparities in Male Infertility in Central Asia (1991-2023).

BACKGROUND: Male infertility (MI) has become an important public health concern in Central Asia (CA), where declining fertility coincides with limited integration of male reproductive health into national strategies. This study analyzed trends in the prevalence and burden of MI in CA countries and assessed associations with selected modifiable behavioral risk factors. METHODS: A longitudinal analysis of Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2023 data was conducted to estimate the age-standardized prevalence and incidence of MI among men aged 15-49 years in five CA countries from 1990 to 2023. Trends

Decolonizing addiction treatment in Eastern Europe and Central Asia: Confronting Russian narcology and Western retreat.

Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) face a dual crisis in addiction treatment. On one side, Russian imperial legacies persist through punitive "narcology," now weaponized amid ongoing aggression. On the other, Western retrenchment, marked by abrupt aid suspensions and dwindling harm-reduction budgets, has weakened the evidence-based counterweight that once challenged authoritarian approaches. The result is a convergence of punitive logics that marginalizes people who use drugs, whether through active repression, such as the closure of methadone programs in Crimea, or sudden neglect, such as

Changes in national rates of psychiatric beds and incarceration in Central Eastern Europe and Central Asia from 1990-2019: A retrospective database analysis.

BACKGROUND: Numbers of psychiatric beds (general, forensic, and residential) and prison populations have been considered to be indicators of institutionalisation of people with mental illnesses. The present study aimed to assess changes of those indicators across Central Eastern Europe and Central Asia (CEECA) over the last three decades to capture how care has developed during that historical period. METHODS: We retrospectively obtained data on numbers of psychiatric beds and prison populations from 30 countries in CEECA between 1990 and 2019. We calculated the median of the percent changes

Lipodystrophy in Central Asia: A Regional Literature Review with a Case Series of Congenital and Acquired Generalized Lipodystrophy.

Background: Lipodystrophy syndromes are a group of rare disorders characterized by partial or generalized loss of adipose tissue, severe insulin resistance, and multiple metabolic complications. Despite increasing global awareness, lipodystrophy remains underrepresented in the published literature from Central Asia, and its true regional prevalence remains unknown. This study presents a case series of patients from Central Asia with congenital and acquired generalized lipodystrophy, reviews the existing regional literature, and determines challenges and future directions to improve lipodystrop

Cultural practices and knee osteoarthritis in Central Asia: a case-control study on risk and protective factors.

INTRODUCTION: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a degenerative joint disease that leads to pain, stiffness, and disability. While established risk factors such as age, obesity, and joint injury are well-documented, the role of cultural practices remains underexplored. This study investigates the association between traditional cultural practices and KOA prevalence in Central Asia. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted between January and March 2025 in Turkestan, Kazakhstan, involving 337 KOA cases and 685 matched controls. Participants completed structured questionnaires assessing demographi

Optimizing HIV prevention and treatment outcomes for persons with substance use in Central Asia: what will it take?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize the status of HIV and substance use in Central Asia and discuss potential ways to move forward to effective epidemic control among people who inject drugs (PWID) in the region and beyond. RECENT FINDINGS: PWID and their partners remain the population most affected by HIV in Central Asia. Lack of effective substance use prevention and treatment options and limited involvement of PWID-led community-based organizations in HIV programs, combined with the requirement for official registration, stigma and discrimination of PWID, and criminalization of drug use remain

Epidemiology of Taenia saginata taeniosis/cysticercosis: a systematic review of the distribution in central and western Asia and the Caucasus.

BACKGROUND: The zoonotic parasite Taenia saginata transmits between humans, the definitive host (causing taeniosis), and bovines as the intermediate host (causing cysticercosis). Central and western Asia and the Caucasus have large cattle populations and beef consumption is widespread. However, an overview of the extent of human T. saginata infection and bovine cysticercosis is lacking. This review aims to summarize the distribution of T. saginata in this region. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted, that gathered published and grey literature, and official data concerning T. saginata t

Mpox Vaccine Acceptance Among Health Care Workers in Central Asia: The Role of COVID-19 Experience.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic may have shaped health care workers' (HCWs') perceptions of emerging infectious threats and willingness to adopt new vaccines. This study examined whether COVID-19-related experiences and psychological factors were associated with Mpox vaccine acceptance among HCWs in Central Asia. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 3,054 HCWs from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan completed an online survey between July and November 2022. Mpox vaccine acceptance was assessed using a single 5-point Likert-scale item and analyzed as a continuous outcome. Measures inc

Clostridioides difficile Infection in Central Asia: Current Evidence, Molecular Epidemiology, and Surveillance Priorities-A Narrative Review.

Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a leading cause of healthcare-associated diarrhoea and a marker of antimicrobial exposure and healthcare quality, yet Central Asia is almost absent from the indexed literature. We reviewed available evidence on CDI epidemiology, antimicrobial use and molecular typing across Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, searching PubMed/MEDLINE, Google Scholar and accessible regional sources, and identified priorities for surveillance development. The retrievable evidence is sparse and fragmented. The strongest direct data came from

Modular Upgrade From AVEIR VR to AVEIR DR: A Leadless Dual-Chamber Pacing Experience in Central Asia.

Leadless pacing systems have evolved toward modular configurations that enable staged restoration of atrioventricular (AV) synchrony without transvenous leads. Real-world experience with a sequential upgrade from AVEIR VR to a dual-chamber AVEIR DR system remains limited. We report a case of staged modular leadless upgrade performed in a patient with progressive sinus node dysfunction, intermittent high-grade AV block, and symptomatic loss of AV synchrony following prior ventricular leadless pacing. A 74-year-old man with a history of mitral valve repair and atrial flutter ablation initially r

The moisture dynamics in arid Central Asia over the last 47,000 years: Insights from the speleothem record.

Water resources are crucial for the survival and development of human societies in arid Central Asia. However, our understanding of regional hydroclimate variability and moisture dynamics remains limited. Here, we present a precisely dated, high-resolution speleothem δ18O record from caves in northern Uzbekistan that reconstructs changes in precipitation δ18O over the last 47,000 years. During the glacial interval, relatively low speleothem δ18O values align with precipitation isotope records from high northern latitudes. The close correspondence between the Uzbekistan record and Greenland ice

HLA-B*51 allelic and carrier frequency in Kazakhstan: insights into Behçet's disease prevalence in Central Asia.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a systemic vasculitis whose prevalence varies according to the ethnicity. HLA-B*51 is a well-known genetic factor predisposing to BD: populations with higher HLA-B*51 allelic frequencies are also those with a greater disease prevalence, as occurs in the Silk Road countries. However, the BD prevalence is unknown in many countries, including Kazakhstan and, in general, Central Asia, despite the location on or near the Silk Road. Due to the lack of clinical studies from this area, we analyzed the bone marrow donors registry in Kazakhstan, in order to assess the HLA-B*51 a

Gynecologic disorders diagnosed during deployment to Southwest/Central Asia, active component females, U.S. Armed Forces, 2008-2013.

Service women in the U.S. Armed Forces face unique challenges that may lead to or exacerbate gynecologic disorders - particularly during deployment. This report documented that approximately one in 10 military women who served in Southwest/Central Asia were diagnosed with a gynecologic disorder at least once during deployment. In addition, gynecologic disorders accounted for approximately one of every 20 medical evacuations of female service members from the war zone. A majority of clinically significant gynecologic disorder cases were attributable to irregular menstruation/bleeding or unspeci

Seroepidemiologic survey for Coxiella burnetii among US military personnel deployed to Southwest and Central Asia in 2005.

We used a seroepidemiologic study to estimate Q fever (Coxiella burnetii) seroprevalence, seroincidence, and risk factors for seroconversion in two deployed military populations in 2005. The first study group resided in an area with a known Q fever outbreak history (Al Asad, Iraq). Of this population, 7.2% seroconverted for an incidence rate of 10.6 seroconversions per 1,000 person-months. The second population included personnel transiting through Qatar on mid-deployment leave from southwest/central Asia. In this group, we found 2.1% prevalence with 0.92 seroconversions per 1,000 person-month
