Advances in biomedical technology have transformed dying into a prolonged, technological process in which clinical attention can drift from the person to physiological parameters. This narrative review argues that phenomenology offers an essential ethical corrective by foregrounding the lived experience of dying and complementing procedural bioethics, with particular attention to South Asia, where cultural, spiritual, and familial dimensions strongly shape end-of-life decisions. Drawing on classical phenomenologists and contemporary scholars of illness experience, the review synthesises insigh

The northward drift of the Indian subcontinent and its biotic exchanges with adjacent landmasses have shaped biodiversity in South Asia. We investigate biogeographic patterns and evolutionary relationships within a clade of spiders endemic to South Asia, focusing on two newly identified species from India. Specimens of the jumping spider tribe Nannenini were collected from 15 localities across the Western Ghats-Sri Lanka biodiversity hotspot, including Sri Lanka's diverse climatic regions and Kerala's tropical forests. DNA sequencing was conducted for the mitochondrial gene COI, nuclear riboso

This Cultural Case Study examines how self-harm becomes meaningful within particular South Asian moral worlds, drawing on intergenerational family oral histories and autoethnographic reflection spanning Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, Tehran, and the United States diaspora. Read alongside South Asian ethnographic and clinical scholarship, these narratives show that bodily self-injury can function as a form of situated agency and relational communication when verbal self-assertion is constrained. Building on prior work that interprets suicide and self-harm as gendered forms of communication in South A

BACKGROUND: The Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) Network programme undertakes post-mortem minimally invasive tissue sampling (MITS), together with collection of ante-mortem clinical information, to investigate causes of childhood deaths across multiple countries. We aimed to evaluate the overall contribution of pneumonia in the causal pathway to death and the causative pathogens of fatal pneumonia in children aged 1-59 months enrolled in the CHAMPS Network.
METHODS: In this observational study we analysed deaths occurring between Dec 16, 2016, and Dec 31, 2022, in t

With the increasing prevalence of anthelmintic resistance in animals recorded globally, and the threat of resistance in human helminths, the need for novel anthelmintic drugs is greater than ever. Most research aimed at discovering novel anthelmintic leads relies on high throughput screening (HTS) of large libraries of synthetic small molecules in industrial and academic settings in developed countries, even though it is the tropical countries that are most plagued by helminth infections. Tropical countries, however, have the advantage of possessing a rich flora that may yield natural products

Visceral leishmaniasis is a vector-borne, protozoan disease with severe public health implications. Following the successful implementation of an elimination programme in South Asia, there is now a concerted endeavour to replicate these efforts in Eastern Africa based on the five essential elimination pillars of case management, integrated vector management, effective surveillance, social mobilisation and operational research. This article highlights how key social determinants (SD) of health (poverty, sociocultural factors and gender, housing and clustering, migration and the healthcare syste

Syndromic obesity is sometimes encountered in clinical practice, but may often be misdiagnosed. This is more often seen in the south Asian region due to higher rates of consanguinity. This article simplifies the clinical features which should prompt a high index of clinical suspicion, and ensure a detailed assessment for syndromic obesity including a genetic test. This manuscript lists various aspects of history and physical examination in an alliterative manner.

Quercus is the largest genus within the Fagaceae and has a rich fossil record. Most of the fossil material is attributed to the subgenus Quercus based on leaves, pollen or rarely acorns and nuts. Fossil records of Q. section Cyclobalanopsis characterized by ring-cupped acorns are relatively few and especially those described based on nuts are scant. In this study, we described four new species of Quercus section Cyclobalanopsis based on mummified acorns and nuts: Q. paleodisciformis X.Y. Liu et J.H. Jin sp. nov., Q. paleohui X.Y. Liu et J.H. BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Approximately three-quarters of people with diabetes live in low- and middle-income countries, and these countries are projected to experience the greatest increase in diabetes burden.
OBJECTIVES: We sought to compare the prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control of diabetes in 3 urban and periurban regions: the Southern Cone of Latin America and Peru, South Asia, and South Africa. In addition, we examined the relationship between diabetes and pre-diabetes with known cardiovascular and metabolic

Esophageal cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide, with East and South Asia bearing a disproportionate burden. Despite global declines in age-standardized rates, these regions continue to face challenges due to sociodemographic and behavioral factors. Using Global Burden of Disease 2021 data, we analyzed trends in prevalence, incidence, mortality, and Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) from 1990 to 2021, emphasizing gender disparities and risk factor contributions. East Asia showed notable progress, with China reporting a 33.96% decrease in age-s

In sarcoidosis, a rare multiorgan disease of unknown aetiology characterised by non-caseating epitheloid cell granulomas, three geoepidemiological factors are major aetiopathogenic factors: geolocation, ethnicity, and personal environment. Geographically, sarcoidosis is mainly reported in the Northern Hemisphere, with the highest incidence rates uniformly reported in countries located at the highest latitudes. The main geoepidemiological-driven differences across the world are of greater female involvement in Southern Europe, the Southern US and Japan, a differentiated radiological pattern (pr

Cysticercosis, caused by Taenia solium larvae, is a neglected tropical disease endemic in more than 75 countries of the world. It significantly contributes to epilepsy in regions with poor sanitation and inadequate food safety practices. This study aims to examine the trends in cysticercosis burden in South Asia (SA) from 1990 to 2021 using prevalence and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) rates, and to forecast the disease burden up to 2031. Data from Global Burden of Disease (GBD) (1990-2021) was utilized to estimate DALYs and prevalence rates. Trend analysis was done by Joinpoint regres

Emission estimates of carbon-containing greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4) and aerosols (PM2.5) were made from forest fire across South Asia using Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) based thermal anomalies and fire products. VIIRS 375 m I-band active fire product was selectively retrieved for the years 2012-2021 over forest cover across South Asia. Annual incidence of fire events across South Asia was 0.17 (±0.05) million (M) with robust spatio-temporal variation. Fire occurrences were mainly concentrated over the forest across Hindu Kush Himalayan region (HKH; 56%), Deccan Plateau (DP

This is the first indigenous case of disseminated histoplasmosis reported from the Penicillium marneffei endemic area in southern China. It was diagnosed by histopathology of tissue, gross and microscopic morphology of the culture and PCR assay of the isolated fungus. Successful antifungal treatment was with itraconazole 400 mg/day for 5 months. This case suggests that histoplasmosis should be an important differential diagnosis in immunocompromised patients in southern China and South East Asia (the only endemic area for P. marneffei).

The South Asian population is rapidly growing in the Greater Toronto Area, with a growth rate of 10.6% vs the national average of 5.2%. Diabetes disproportionately affects South Asians with a prevalence that is 8.1-fold higher than that in Caucasians, with increased risk of macro- and microvascular complications. There are several risk factors that have been identified, including 24 single-nucleotide polymorphisms, higher insulin resistance, low mean skeletal mass with higher visceral fat, and socioeconomic and family stressors. South Asians are the largest visible minority in Canada, and thes

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Fatty liver disease is highly prevalent, resulting in overarching wellbeing and economic costs. Addressing it requires comprehensive and coordinated multisectoral action. We developed a fatty liver disease Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) country score to provide insights into country-level preparedness to address fatty liver disease through a whole-of-society lens.
APPROACH AND RESULTS: We developed 2 fatty liver disease-SDG score sets. The first included 6 indicators (child wasting, child overweight, noncommunicable disease mortality, a universal health coverage servi

Across low-and-middle income countries, adolescents navigate social environments where norms shape their opportunities and life trajectories. Faith actors are deeply embedded within these systems and often influence expectations related to communication, sexuality, reproductive health, and marriage. While faith engagement is widely recognized as important for sustainable change, empirical evidence on how faith actors contribute to social norm change remains limited. This paper presents findings from a 2024 scoping review of peer-reviewed and grey literature (2014-2024) examining how faith acto

This study examines the association of education, government effectiveness, health expenditure, economic growth, and urbanization with life expectancy in South Asia within Grossman's health capital framework. Using annual panel data for seven South Asian countries-Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka-over 2000-2025, the analysis investigates both long-run and short-run relationships. The empirical strategy combines panel unit root tests, panel ARDL estimation, Driscoll-Kraay standard errors, PCSE, FGLS, System GMM, and bootstrap panel causality tests. The results
