Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction: comparison of patient characteristics and clinical outcomes within Asia and between Asia, Europe and the Americas.

AIMS: Nearly 60% of the world's population lives in Asia but little is known about the characteristics and outcomes of Asian patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) compared to other areas of the world. METHODS AND RESULTS: We pooled two, large, global trials, with similar design, in 13 174 patients with HFrEF (patient distribution: China 833, India 1390, Japan 209, Korea 223, Philippines 223, Taiwan 199 and Thailand 95, Western Europe 3521, Eastern Europe 4758, North America 613, and Latin America 1110). Asian patients were younger (55.0-63.9 years) than in Western

A global perspective in second-line treatment patterns for patients with advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal cancer is a highly prevalent cancer associated with low survival, especially among those with advanced disease. Second-line (2L) treatment patterns and related clinical outcomes of patients with advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (advESCC) treated in routine clinical care were examined globally and regionally. METHODS: A retrospective, noninterventional study collected physician-provided chart data of patients aged ≥20 years receiving either 2L active systemic therapy or BSC following first-line active therapy for advESCC from 11 countries in Asian and Western

Respiratory infections unique to Asia.

Asia is a highly heterogeneous region with vastly different cultures, social constitutions and populations affected by a wide spectrum of respiratory diseases caused by tropical pathogens. Asian patients with community-acquired pneumonia differ from their Western counterparts in microbiological aetiology, in particular the prominence of Gram-negative organisms, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Burkholderia pseudomallei and Staphylococcus aureus. In addition, the differences in socioeconomic and health-care infrastructures limit the usefulness of Western management guidelines for pneumonia in Asia.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in Asia: emerging perspectives.

As in the West, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the commonest chronic liver disease in Asia, with a prevalence higher than 40 % in some countries. The risk factors for NAFLD development are similar to those in Western countries, including increased body mass index, diabetes, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome. NAFLD in Asians is associated with different extrahepatic manifestations involving the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and renal systems. A considerable proportion of Asians with NAFLD are described as having "lean" NAFLD. Present in approximately 20 % of the Asian

Gestational weight gain across continents and ethnicity: systematic review and meta-analysis of maternal and infant outcomes in more than one million women.

BACKGROUND: The association between Institute of Medicine (IOM) guidelines and pregnancy outcomes across ethnicities is uncertain. We evaluated the associations of gestational weight gain (GWG) outside 2009 IOM guidelines, with maternal and infant outcomes across the USA, western Europe and east Asia, with subgroup analyses in Asia. The aim was to explore ethnic differences in maternal prepregnancy body mass index (BMI), GWG and health outcomes across these regions. METHODS: Systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression of observational studies were used for the study. MEDLINE, MEDLINE

Dual domestications and origin of traits in grapevine evolution.

We elucidate grapevine evolution and domestication histories with 3525 cultivated and wild accessions worldwide. In the Pleistocene, harsh climate drove the separation of wild grape ecotypes caused by continuous habitat fragmentation. Then, domestication occurred concurrently about 11,000 years ago in Western Asia and the Caucasus to yield table and wine grapevines. The Western Asia domesticates dispersed into Europe with early farmers, introgressed with ancient wild western ecotypes, and subsequently diversified along human migration trails into muscat and unique western wine grape ancestries

Epidemiology and aetiology of chronic rhinosinusitis in Asia-A narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Despite having a similar prevalence to Western populations, literature on chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) in the Asian population is sparse. There is limited data on the epidemiology and aetiology of CRS in Asia. OBJECTIVES: To review the current literature on the epidemiology and aetiology of CRS in Asia. METHODS: This is a narrative review of published data on the epidemiology and aetiology of CRS. Studies on CRS in Asian countries, published in English and indexed on PubMed or Google Scholar were reviewed. Where available, data extracted included epidemiology, endotype and cytoki

Risk for delivery complications in Robson Group 1 for non-Western women in Norway compared with ethnic Norwegian women - A population-based observational cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the pregnancy outcome of low-risk pregnancies for women originating from non-Western countries compared with ethnic Norwegian women. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective population-based observational cohort study with prospectively registered data. Conducted at Stavanger University Hospital, Norway, with approximately 4800 deliveries annually, from 2009 to 2015. We included women with low-risk pregnancies of non-Western origin (n = 1413), born in Africa (n = 224), Asia (n = 439), Eastern Europe (n = 499), Middle East (n = 138), South America (n = 85), Western (n = 979), and et

East is east and West is west: perspectives on the menopause in Asia and The West.

There is a school of thought that believes that menopausal symptoms are a peculiarly 'Western' phenomenon, not experienced by women from other regions and particularly not from Asia where, it has been claimed, dietary, social and cultural factors afforded protection for women living in that region. More recently, studies conducted in multi-ethnic communities living in Western countries as well as in Asian communities have found that the menopause and its consequences are similar world-wide. Ethnic differences within Asia account for small differences in endogenous hormone levels and age at men

Epidemiology and risk factors of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

The nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is defined as the presence of hepatic steatosis, determined by either imaging or histology, in the absence of secondary causes of hepatic fat accumulation. Nonalcoholic fatty liver is defined as the presence of hepatic steatosis with no evidence of hepatocellular injury in the form of ballooning of the hepatocytes or fibrosis. NASH is defined as the presence of hepatic steatosis and inflammation with hepatocyte injury (ballooning) with or without fibrosis. Although initial epidemiological studies have focused on its prevalence in the Western countri

The current prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome in Asia.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) has been one of the commonly presented gastrointestinal disorders. It is of interest how commonly it presents in the society. Western studies indicated that most population-based IBS prevalences range 10%-15%. It is believed that IBS is prevalent in both East and West countries without a significant prevalence difference. Most recently, the Asia IBS prevalence has a higher trend in the affluent cities compared to South Asia. Since many Asia IBS prevalence studies have been published in the recent decade, we could compare the IBS prevalence data divided by various

Impact of Geographic Region on the COMMANDER-HF Trial.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to compare patient characteristics, outcomes, and treatment effects among regions in the COMMANDER-HF trial. BACKGROUND: Globalization of cardiovascular trials increases generalizability. However, regional differences may also introduce heterogeneity in results. METHODS: Incidence rates and interactions with treatment were recorded in pre-specified regions: Eastern Europe, Western Europe and South Africa, North America, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. RESULTS: Most patients (n = 3,224; 64.2%) were from Eastern Europe; 458 (9.1%) were from Western Europe and So
