Longitudinal study on the impact of childhood sexual abuse on sexual assertiveness: The mediating role of sexual fantasy.

BACKGROUND: One of the devastating long-term outcomes of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is its effect on sexual assertiveness, manifested by the limited ability to initiate desired sexual interactions, express one's sexuality, and refuse unwanted sexual activities. OBJECTIVE: This study examined a model in which the relation between CSA and sexual assertiveness was mediated by survivors' subjective experience of their sexuality, as reflected by their subjective experience of sexual fantasy. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Three-hundred-and-sixty-three adults participated in this longitudinal study.

Latin American Women´s Beliefs, Views and Ideas About Sexual Assertiveness: A Focus Group Study in Cuenca (Ecuador).

In an attempt to extend our understanding of how social contexts co-create female sexuality in Latin America, the aim of the current study was to explore the beliefs, views, and ideas about sexual assertiveness in Latino emerging adult women. Seventeen women between 22 and 30 years old living in Cuenca, Ecuador, participated in focus groups. A constructivist grounded theory approach was used to analyze the data. Findings suggest that the overall views about sexual assertiveness in emerging adult women can be grouped into five categories: (1) gender role schemata; (2) concerns about the partner

Promoting African American women and sexual assertiveness in reducing HIV/AIDS: an analytical review of the research literature.

African American women, including adolescents and adults, are disproportionately affected by the transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). HIV/AID is a health disparity issue for African American females in comparison to other ethnic groups. According to data acquired from 33 states in 2005, 64% of women who have HIV/ AIDS are African American women. It is estimated that during 2001-2004, 61% of African Americans under the age of 25 had been living with HIV/AIDS. This article is an analytical review of the literature emphasizing sexual as

Generalization effects of coping-skills training: influence of self-defense training on women's efficacy beliefs, assertiveness, and aggression.

Concern for personal safety is a pervasive stressor for many women. Developing competencies in physical self-defense may empower women to engage more freely in daily activities with less fear. This study assessed the effects of physical self-defense training on multiple aspects of women's perceived self-efficacy and other self-reported personality characteristics. Training powerfully increased task-specific (self-defense) efficacy beliefs as well as physical and global efficacy beliefs. Training increased self-reported assertiveness, and posttraining decreases in hostility and aggression were

The Mediating Role of Sexual Assertiveness in the Relationship Between Sexual Mindfulness and Relational Quality in Married Iranian Women.

Mindfulness during sexual activity has demonstrated several beneficial effects on both sexual and relational experiences. However, little is known about the mechanisms through which sexual mindfulness enhances an individual's experience. This study investigated the role of sexual assertiveness as a mediator in the relationship between sexual mindfulness and relational quality among a sample of Iranian women. Using a multi-stage cluster sampling method, the questionnaires were completed by 307 women aged between 20 and 45 years. The results indicated significant positive associations between se

Case report: Successful induction of buprenorphine/naloxone using a microdosing schedule and assertive outreach.

BACKGROUND: The requirement for moderate withdrawal prior to initiation can be a barrier to buprenorphine/naloxone induction. CASE PRESENTATION: We aimed to use a microdosing regimen to initiate regular dosing of buprenorphine/naloxone in a high-risk patient with a history of failed initiations due, in part, to withdrawal symptoms. Using an assertive outreach model and a buprenorphine/naloxone microdosing schedule, we initiated treatment of an individual's opioid use disorder. There was a successful buprenorphine/naloxone microdosing induction as the team reached a therapeutic dose of bupreno

The Drive For Self-Assertion And The Reality Principle In A Patient With Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma: The History of Giulia.

Life in a contaminated environment is often marked by a cumulative psychological trauma that exhibits a variety of social-environmental aspects. This is why I suggested a psychotherapeutic group intervention for the population of Casale Monferrato, a municipality in Northern Italy that is sadly renowned for asbestos-related events and the high mortality rate of its inhabitants. Groupality appears to show the point of contact between psyche and soma, while also promoting the birth of a more realistic approach to the various levels of suffering and their configuration. The multifamily approach s

A Qualitative Evaluation of an Adapted Assertive Community Treatment Program: Perspectives During COVID-19.

The Pinellas County Empowerment Team (PCET) was an adapted assertive community treatment (ACT) program created to meet the needs of Pinellas County residents with serious behavioral health concerns and high frequency of hospitalization (medical and psychiatric) and incarceration. Recent research demonstrates that individuals participating in ACT programs can transition to lower-intensity services. To understand the needs and barriers in transitioning PCET clients to lower-intensity services and the unique experiences during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the researchers conducted a quali

The Use of Clozapine in the Serious Mental Illness Patients Enrolled in an Assertive Community Treatment Program.

Introduction Health care cost is projected to reach 20% of the nation's gross national product (GNP) by 2016. 6.2% of this is from mental health. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimates the prevalence of serious mental illness (SMI) at 13.1 million or 5.2% of American adults age 18 or over. Hence, mental health care cost for this patient population is significant. Patients with SMI involved in an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) program are individuals who experience the most intractable symptoms and the greatest level of dysfunction from their mental illness. These individ

Mental health courts and forensic assertive community treatment teams as correctional diversion programs.

Problem-solving courts (PSCs) developed as a means of mandating treatment and judicial supervision of certain types of court participants. PSCs have rapidly expanded in number and type over several decades. Mental health courts (MHCs) are a type of PSC that arose in response to the growing number of persons with mental illness within the criminal justice system. Their primary role is to divert individuals with mental illness from incarceration into psychiatric treatment and to reduce recidivism while improving psychosocial functioning of participants. Although different in history, philosophy,

Assertive Community Treatment for alcohol dependence (ACTAD): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol dependence is a significant and costly problem in the UK yet only 6% of people a year receive treatment. Current service provision based on the treatment of acute episodes of illness and emphasising personal choice and motivation results in a small proportion of these patients engaging with alcohol treatment. There is a need for interventions targeted at the population of alcohol dependent patients who are hard to engage in conventional treatment. Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), a model of care based on assertive outreach, has been used for treating patients with sever

Implementation of assertive community treatment in Australia: model fidelity, patient characteristics and staff experiences.

The impact of variable implementation of the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) model on patient outcomes is increasingly recognised. We conducted the first study of four established Australian ACT teams, examining team composition, processes and model fidelity, using previously validated questionnaires. Demographic and clinical details of patients and their own experiences of ACT were gathered from staff. Associations between burnout and work experiences were examined. All teams were ACT-like (mean DACTS score = 3.7, SD = 0.3) with few significant patient differences between teams, except di

Fidelity to assertive community treatment and client outcomes in the New Hampshire dual disorders study.

OBJECTIVE: The study examined the association between fidelity of programs to the assertive community treatment model and client outcomes in dual disorders programs. METHODS: Assertive community treatment programs in the New Hampshire dual disorders study were classified as low-fidelity programs (three programs) or high-fidelity programs (four programs) based on extensive longitudinal process data. The study included 87 clients with a dual diagnosis of severe mental illness and a comorbid substance use disorder. Sixty-one clients were in the high-fidelity programs, and 26 were in the low-fide

From lack of assertiveness to depression: A co-twin control study of hostility and social support across 23 years.

BACKGROUND: Although lack of assertiveness (LOA) and hostility are established risk factors for depression, the mechanisms linking them to depression and their genetic or environmental contributions remain unclear. We used the Swedish Adoption/Twin Study of Aging (SATSA) to test whether social support (SS) deficits mediated these pathways. METHODS: Community-dwelling twins (N = 2,034; 1,017 pairs) were followed for up to 23 years (1984-2007). We examined serial (LOA → hostility → SS → depression) and parallel (LOA + hostility → SS → depression) mediation models. Within-pair difference analyse
