Traditional uses of Achillea millefolium L. (Asteraceae) include the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. In the present study, we used anesthetized rats to assess the hypotensive effect of a hydroethanolic extract (HEAM), and its dichloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate (EA), butanolic (BT), and dichloromethane-2 (DCM-2) fractions, besides the flavonoid artemetin, isolated from A. millefolium. The oral administration of HEAM (100-300 mg/kg), DCM (20mg/kg), DCM-2 (10-30 mg/kg), but not EA (10 mg/kg) and BT (50 mg/kg) fractions significantly reduced the mean arterial pressure (MAP) of normotensive

The crude extract and hexane, dichloromethane, and methanol fractions obtained from the aerial parts of Pterocaulon polystachyum (Asteraceae) were assayed against Acanthamoeba castellanii, a free-living ameba that causes acute amebic keratitis. Because of its capacity to form cysts, some strains of this protozoan are excellent opportunists and therapy resistant, necessitating a search for new drugs in order to develop more dynamic therapies that make it easier for patients to maintain long-term treatment. In this context, plants with medicinal properties have been analyzed. The broad-spectrum

The pyrrolizidine alkaloid content of Solanecio gigas (Vatke) C. Jeffrey (Asteraceae), an Ethiopian medicinal plant widely used for the treatment of colic, diarrhea, gout, otitis media, typhoid fever, and noted for its wound dressing and antiabortifacient activities was studied. The flower and leaf extracts contained 0.19% and 0.14% alkaloids (dry weight), respectively. GLC-MS analysis indicated that all the alkaloids in the flowers are pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), whereas the leaves contain other type of alkaloids with PAs occurring in low concentrations. Roughly, 80% and 90% of the total P

Short DNA barcodes may facilitate sequence recovery from degraded material, but their ability to retain target-family identity while excluding related taxa varies among genomic regions. We computationally evaluated 16 nuclear, plastid, and mitochondrial marker regions from 11 Asterales families using 279,956 NCBI locus-record matches and an accession-disjoint discovery/test design. Thirty-one candidate segments of 50-200 bp (mean, 98.55 bp) were screened in discovery data and evaluated for within-Asteraceae sequence recall, differentiation from non-Asteraceae Asterales, in silico primer behavi

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by opportunistic pathogens are among the leading health challenges globally. Most available treatment options are failing as a result of antibiotic resistance and adverse effects. Natural sources such as plants may serve as promising alternatives.
METHODS: Compounds were isolated from the South African weed Chromolaena odorata through column chromatography. Purified compounds were tested for antimicrobial activity using the p-iodonitrotetrazolium chloride (INT) colorimetric method, against uropathogenic Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus

Carlina acaulis (Asteraceae) has a long history of medicinal use in Europe due to its antimicrobial properties. The strong activity of Carlina oxide, themain compound of the essential oil of C. acaulis against two MRSA strains, Streptococcus pyogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, and C. glabrata was confirmed. A strong and selective activity against Trypanosoma brucei brucei with an IC₅₀ of 1.0 μg/mL and a SI of 446 compared to human HeLa cells was recorded. The selective toxicity of Carlina oxide makes it a promising lead compound for the development of drugs to treat African try

The mosquito feeding and ovipositional repellency of the major monoterpenoid present in the volatile oil ofHemizonia fitchii (Asteraceae), i.e., 1,8-cineole, was investigated. Although 1,8-cineole did not exhibit any significant mosquito larvicidal activity, it was moderately effective as a feeding repellent and highly effective as an ovipositional repellent against adultAedes aegypti (yellow fever mosquito). The ovipositional repellency of 1,8-cineole, coupled with the presence of severalHemizonia chromenes previously shown to possess mosquito larvicidal activity, may therefore account in lar

Chamaemelum nobile L. (Asteraceae), commonly known as Roman chamomile, is a perennial herb with branched rhizomes and multiple leafy stems. The length of the complete cp genome is 149,827 bp, and it comprises 128 genes, including 83 protein-coding genes, 8 ribosomal RNA genes, and 37 transfer RNA genes. By conducting phylogenetic analyses based on chloroplast genomes, we found that C. nobile was more closely related to Matricaria chamomilla var. recutita within the chamomile species. This finding contributes to a better understanding of the phylogenetic relationship between C. nobile and other

Dispersal and dormancy are important risk-reducing strategies in unpredictable environments. Negative covariation between these strategies is theoretically expected, but empirical evidence is limited and inconsistent. Moreover, covariation may be affected by other life-history traits and may vary across levels of biological organization. We assessed dispersal (vertical fall time of fruits, a proxy for wind dispersal ability) and dormancy (germination fractions measured during germination trials) in populations of 15 annual and 12 perennial wind-dispersed species in six Asteraceae genera from S

A "novel" protocol is presented for easy and reliable estimation of soluble hydroxycinnamate levels in Cichorium intybus L. leaf tissue in large-scale experiments. Samples were standardized by punching 6 discs per leaf, and hydroxycinnamates were extracted by submerging the discs in 80% ethanol with 5% acetic acid for at least 48 h in the darkness at 4°C. Residual dry mass of the discs was used for a posteriori correction of compound levels. Chlorophyll was eliminated by chloroform, and the aqueous phases were transferred to microplates, dried, and dissolved in 50% methanol for HPLC analysis a
