Decoding Attention through EEG: Paving the Way for BCI Applications in Attention-Related Disorders.

This study investigates attention-related traits in EEG signals to assess the potential of Electroencephalography (EEG) as an objective diagnostic tool for attention-related disorders such as ADHD, anxiety, and learning disabilities. EEG data were collected from 31 participants, including individuals with ADHD, while they performed a Go/No-Go task designed to evaluate attention and impulsivity. The analysis focused on the spectral characteristics of brain activity, examining the relative power of theta, alpha, and beta frequency bands, along with the theta-to-beta ratio (TBR), to identify dist

Visual attention in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder before and after stimulant treatment.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder which frequently persists into adulthood. The primary goal of the current study was to (a) investigate attentional functions of stimulant medication-naïve adults with ADHD, and (b) investigate the effects of 6 weeks of methylphenidate treatment on these functions. METHODS: The study was a prospective, non-randomized, non-blinded, 6-week follow-up design with 42 stimulant medication-naïve adult patients with ADHD, and 42 age and parental education-matched healthy controls. Assessments included measures

Prefrontal and executive attention network lesions and the development of attention-deficit/hyperactivity symptomatology.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between focal stroke lesions of Posner's executive attention network and a specific region of interest in the frontal lobes (orbital frontal and mesial frontal) and either attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or traits of the disorder (ADHD symptomatology). METHOD: Twenty-nine children with focal stroke lesions were studied with standardized psychiatric assessments and anatomical brain magnetic resonance imaging. The pattern of lesion overlap in subjects with ADHD symptomatology was determined. RESULTS: Fifteen of 28 subjects with no prest

Intergenerational transmission of somatization behaviour: 2. Observations of joint attention and bids for attention.

BACKGROUND: Somatoform disorders may have their roots in childhood through processes that involve an enhanced parental focus on health. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that somatizing mothers will show less joint involvement than other mothers during play but greater responsiveness when this play involves a 'medical' theme. METHOD: Cross-sectional observational study of 42 chronic somatizers, 44 organically ill and 50 healthy mothers and their 4-8 year-old children during structured play and a meal. Tasks comprised boxes containing tea-set items, 'medical' items and a light s

Hemineglect and Attentional Dysfunction.

Tracing the history of neglect is intriguing, as diverse terminologies have been used to characterize a multi-factorial disorder with rather startling manifestations. In part, heterogeneous terms may have hinted at distinct subtypes. Thus, different variants of hemi-inattention and neglect relate conceptually, but may be functionally dissociable. Patients with neglect, acting as if the world-space they perceive is full, do not phenomenally experience the omissions or absences so patently obvious to an observer. From the late 19th century, hemi-inattention was described according to its promine

Developmental attentional dyslexia.

Attentional dyslexia is a reading deficit in which letters migrate between neighboring words, but are correctly identified and keep their correct relative position within the word. Thus, for example, fig tree can be read as fig free or even tie free. This study reports on 10 Hebrew-speaking individuals with developmental attentional dyslexia and explores in detail the characteristics of their between-word errors. Each participant read 2290 words, presented in word pairs: 845 horizontally presented word pairs, 240 vertically presented word pairs, and 60 nonword pairs. The main results are that

Dyslexia and attentional shifting.

Dyslexia is a neurocognitive deficit primarily expressed in reading difficulties, but also affecting non-linguistic performance. Several studies report that dyslexics perform differently in the attentional blink paradigm, which indicates an impaired capacity to rapidly shift visual attention. However, attentional shifting can occur at different levels of cognitive processing, and it is unclear whether dyslexic attentional shifting is impaired at all levels, or only at the peripheral levels. We studied performance on a task-switching paradigm by dyslexics and normal readers to test whether the

Attention bias vs. attention control modification for social anxiety disorder: A randomized controlled trial.

Gaze-Contingent Music Reward Therapy (GC-MRT) is an eye-tracking-based attention bias modification protocol for social anxiety disorder (SAD) with established clinical efficacy. However, it remains unclear if improvement following GC-MRT hinges on modification of threat-related attention or on more general enhancement of attention control. Here, 50 patients with SAD were randomly allocated to GC-MRT using either threat faces or shapes. Results indicate comparable reductions in social anxiety and co-morbid depression symptoms in the two conditions. Patients in the shapes condition showed a sign

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder involves differential cortical processing in a visual spatial attention paradigm.

OBJECTIVE: Inattention is undoubtedly one of the main characteristics of Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Nevertheless, a growing corpus of evidence shows that not all attentional processes are affected in this condition. This study aimed to explore the distribution of attentional resources in children with ADHD via a spatially shifted double-oddball visual task. METHODS: We recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) for all visual stimuli. Subjects were instructed to allocate attention in a specific area of visual space while ignoring all stimuli presented outside. Ten male chi

Reducing anxiety and attentional bias with reward association learning and attentional bias modification.

The current study examined the effects of a reward associative learning procedure and the traditional threat-avoidance ABM paradigm on anxiety and attentional bias. In reward training, participants were given high rewards for correct responses to neutral target and low rewards for correct responses to negative target. In reward control training, participants received no cues of rewards after their responses. High trait anxious individuals (N = 76) first completed a session of reward training or reward control training, followed by four sessions of ABM training or ABM control training. Generali

Exploring the effect of context and expertise on attention: is attention shifted by information in medical images?

Radiologists make critical decisions based on searching and interpreting medical images. The probability of a lung nodule differs across anatomical regions within the chest, raising the possibility that radiologists might have a prior expectation that creates an attentional bias. The development of expertise is also thought to cause "tuning" to relevant features, allowing radiologists to become faster and more accurate at detecting potential masses within their domain of expertise. Here, we tested both radiologists and control participants with a novel attentional-cueing paradigm to investigat

Effects of attention control training on drug abusers' attentional bias and treatment outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Attentional bias for drug-related stimuli (Drug-AB) has been shown to play an important role in drug abuse, drug treatment, and relapse. This study sought to retrain Drug-AB using the Drug Attention Control Training Program (Drug-ACTP) on a sample of Iranian drug abusers. METHOD: The experimental group (n = 24) received 3 sessions of training with the Drug-ACTP in addition to treatment as usual; the control group (n = 24) received only treatment as usual. All participants completed a demographic questionnaire, the drug-Stroop test, measures of physiological cue reactivity, the Pers

Executive function in sleep apnea: controlling for attentional capacity in assessing executive attention.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: As the effects of general slowness and decreased attentional capacity on higher executive attention have not been fully taken into account in the sleep apnea literature, we statistically controlled for basic attentional performance in evaluating executive attention per se in sleep apnea patients. DESIGN: A case-controlled design was used with comparison of basic and executive attentional tasks. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-six polysomnographically diagnosed patients (mean apnea-hypopnea index = 60.5 +/- SD 31.6) participated, together with 32 healthy controls. MEASUREMENTS AND RES

Attentional and perceptual disturbances in children with Tourette's syndrome, attention deficit disorder, and epilepsy.

Perceptual, motor, and neuromaturational competence were assessed using a battery of tasks with three groups of children with diagnosed disorders of Tourette's syndrome (TS), attentional deficit with no known organic substrate (Constitutional AD), and attentional deficit disorder in children with epilepsy (E-ADD). The purpose was to determine how the three groups related to each other on these measures and to establish clinical validation of the test battery. As predicted, the control and the TS groups did much better than the ADD and seizure groups. The TS group differed from the controls on

The role of the dorsal attention network in attention bias modification for social anxiety disorder.

Identifying reliable biomarkers of treatment response is central to advancing personalized psychiatry. While whole-brain functional connectivity models have shown promise in predicting clinical outcomes, especially for broad-spectrum interventions like cognitive-behavioral therapy, targeted treatments may benefit from more specific neuromarkers. In social anxiety disorder (SAD), Gaze-Contingent Music Reward Therapy (GC-MRT) is a novel attention bias modification (ABM) intervention designed to reduce preferential attentional allocation to socially threatening stimuli. Given the dorsal attention

The control of overt and covert attention across two nodes of the attention-control network.

Attention is a central cognitive capability whose focus is thought to be directed by a spatial map coding behavioral priority. Here we tested the three defining properties of priority map theory with electrophysiological recordings from two attentional control areas. Both areas, lateral intraparietal area LIP and dorsal posterior inferotemporal cortex PITd, selected behaviorally relevant locations even in the absence of visual stimuli (cognitive sustainment principle). Second, priority signals are thought to arise from the summation of multiple spatial signals (superposition principle). LIP ap

Functional Connectivity of the Dorsal and Ventral Attention Network and Its Role in Attentional Disengagement.

BACKGROUND: The interplay between the ventral attention network (VAN) and dorsal attention network (DAN) is crucial for attentional control, particularly in disengagement processes. While task-based fMRI studies have extensively characterized their roles, less is known about whether intrinsic connectivity patterns during rest within these networks predict individual differences in attentional disengagement. This study investigates the relationship between resting-state functional VAN-DAN connectivity and disengagement efficiency. METHODS: An initial sample of 85 healthy participants completed

The disruptive effects of pain on the early allocation of attentional resources: An attentional blink study.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that pain dampens attentional processes. However, much of this work has been based on higher-order attentional tasks that involve only spatial attention. Other aspects of the process through which pain engages and holds attention are relatively understudied, in particular, temporal attention. The present set of studies explored how naturally occurring pain (i.e. acute headache) and pain-valenced stimuli affect the ability to recall the second of two targets presented in rapid succession. METHODS: Across both experiments participants were required to indica

Shifting Instead of Drifting - Improving Attentional Performance by Means of the Attention Training Technique.

Background: The Attention Training Technique (ATT) as part of Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) has shown to be a promising treatment element for several psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety. ATT predicts improvements of the ability to shift attention away from internal and non-relevant stimuli (e.g., ruminative thoughts) toward the relevant stimuli and aims to increase attentional flexibility and control. The current study investigated the impact of the Attention Training Technique on attentional performance. Methods: Eighty-five healthy participants (29 in two doses ATT, 28 in four

Selective attentional deficit in essential tremor: Evidence from the attention network test.

INTRODUCTION: The traditional view of essential tremor (ET) as a monosymptomatic and benign disorder has been reconsidered after patients with ET have been shown to experience cognitive deficits that are also related to attention. The Attention Network Test (ANT) is a rapid, widely used test to measure the efficiency of three attentional networks, i.e. alerting, orienting and executive, by evaluating reaction times (RTs) in response to visual stimuli. The aim of this study was to investigate attentional functioning in ET patients by means of the ANT. METHODS: 21 non-demented patients with ET
