The use of virtual reality exposure in the treatment of anxiety disorders.

One possible alternative to standard in vivo exposure may be virtual reality exposure. Virtual reality integrates real-time computer graphics, body tracking devices, visual displays, and other sensory input devices to immerse a participant in a computer-generated virtual environment. Virtual reality exposure (VRE) is potentially an efficient and cost-effective treatment of anxiety disorders. VRE therapy has been successful in reducing the fear of heights in the first known controlled study of virtual reality in the treatment of a psychological disorder. Outcome was assessed on measures of anxi

Design, Implementation and Evaluation of Educational Aid Game for Differential Diagnosis of Oral Lesions Through Mobile Learning.

INTRODUCTION: The accurate recognition of oral lesions is a core competency in oral medicine. This skill is critical, as timely patient presentation is not always guaranteed, and precise diagnosis is essential, particularly for malignant lesions requiring immediate intervention to prevent serious health risks. Traditional learning can be reinforced through engaging methods that enhance interest and knowledge retention. This study aimed to develop a computer-based educational game and evaluate its impact on student learning by comparing it with traditional instruction, while also assessing stud

An educational intervention to promote a culture of gender equity among persons with traumatic brain injury and caregivers: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) outcomes are dependent on patients' biological sex (e.g., hormone levels) and sociocultural gender (e.g., norms, responsibilities). Informal caregivers additionally experience disruptions to identity and roles post-TBI. However, information on this topic remains largely unavailable to patients and caregivers. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a one-time educational intervention on sex and gender influences in TBI for patients and informal caregivers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a pilot pre-test/post-test randomized co

Crystal methamphetamine use and bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among gay, bisexual and other sexual minority men in Canada.

OBJECTIVE: While crystal methamphetamine use by gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) is associated with increased risk for sexually transmitted infection (STI) transmission, less is understood about the causal pathways between crystal methamphetamine use and STIs. We examined whether the association between greater crystal methamphetamine risk and prevalent bacterial STI diagnosis among GBM was mediated by two types of attitudinal variables: attitudes toward condoms, and sexual escape motives, defined as the use of substances to escape self-awareness during sex, and by sexu

Evaluation of the Pediatric Research Participation Questionnaire for Measuring Attitudes Toward Cancer Clinical Trials Among Adolescents and Young Adults.

Purpose: Reasons for the relatively low rates of adolescent and young adults (AYA) enrollment in cancer clinical trials in the United States require further empirical examination. In addition to structural factors such as lack of access and insurance barriers, attitudes toward clinical trials may be important to consider. This study aimed to evaluate and validate the Pediatric Research Participation Questionnaire (PRPQ)-a measure of attitudes to clinical trials adapted for AYA (15-29) with cancer and their caregivers. Methods: One hundred twenty-four AYA and 94 caregivers completed the PRPQ-AY

Surgeon attitudes and practice patterns in managing small bowel obstruction: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Historical training instructs surgeons to, "never let the sun set on a small bowel obstruction (SBO)" due to concern for bowel ischemia. However, the routine use of computed tomography scans for ruling out ischemia provides the opportunity for trial of nonoperative management, allowing time for resolution of adhesive SBO. In light of advances in practice, little is known about how surgeons manage these patients, in particular, whether there is consistency in the stated duration for safe nonoperative management. METHODS: Using a case vignette (a patient with computed tomography sca

Awareness of obesity's causes is not linked to less Weight-Related bias.

Weight stigma remains a major public health issue that negatively impacts individuals living with obesity. This study explores its prevalence in the Spanish adult population and examines whether viewing obesity as a disease influences societal attitudes. A representative sample of 1,000 adults participated in a Computer-Assisted Telephone Interview assessing knowledge, stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination related to obesity, along with sociodemographic data and personal beliefs about its causes. While 40.8% attributed obesity to a lack of self-control, 59.2% considered it a disease. Thos

The effects of warnings and an educational brochure on computer working posture: a test of the C-HIP model in the context of RSI-relevant behaviour.

This study tested whether warnings can result in a better working posture with respect to RSI prevention compared with an educational brochure. By using a warning, the information provision on how to prevent RSI can be shorter and only interrupts with the task at hand for a short time. Five conditions were created to compare the effects on position adjustments of a warning displayed on the computer screen, a warning hanging on the wall, an educational brochure, a neutral interruption on the computer screen, and no intervention. Systematic observations of respondents' working postures showed th

BACKGROUND: Telemental health services effectively address major challenges in mental health care delivery. To maximize the potential of the services, it is essential to facilitate patient use and reduce use disparities. Nevertheless, determinants of patient use of telemental health services have been scarcely investigated thus far. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify determinants of patient use of telemental health services since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and in the last 4 weeks. METHODS: In December 2023, we conducted a cross-sectional, quota-based (gender and age group) online survey

Factors associated with family caregivers' attitudes toward deprescribing in long-term care facilities: a cross-sectional study in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Deprescribing has emerged as an important strategy for addressing polypharmacy among older adults in long-term care facilities (LTCFs). Family caregivers often play a key role in medication-related decision-making, yet factors associated with caregivers' attitudes toward deprescribing remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with caregivers' attitudes toward deprescribing among residents of LTCFs in South Korea. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 973 family caregivers of residents in LTCFs. Attitudes toward depr

A simplex model of the paranoid process: implications for diagnosis and prognosis.

The theory that the paranoid process is gradual and insidious was tested quantitatively by means of LISREL, a computer program designed to trace causal pathways between latent variables. The results clearly confirmed Lorr's simplex model which depicts a progressive sequence of six stages, beginning with hostile attitude and ending with delusions of influence. The model suggests that it is artificial to distinguish paranoid personality, paranoia and paranoid schizophrenia as separate diagnostic entities. Instead, paranoid schizophrenia should be regarded as a more severe form of paranoia which

Safe Thinking and Affect Regulation (STAR): human immunodeficiency virus prevention in alternative/therapeutic schools.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of Safe Thinking and Affect Regulation (STAR), a 14-session HIV-prevention program for adolescents at alternative/therapeutic schools. Because these youth frequently have difficulties with emotions and cognitions, it was designed to improve sexuality-specific affect management and cognitive monitoring, as well as HIV-related knowledge and attitudes. It was hypothesized that STAR would lead to a decrease in sexual risk and improved HIV knowledge and attitudes. METHOD: Fourteen schools were randomly assigned by year either to the STAR intervention or a b
