Pseudohypacusis: Audiometric progression, psychological and speech therapy assessment. Toward multidisciplinary management? A cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Pseudohypacusis (PHA), or non-organic hearing loss, is still poorly understood and often underdiagnosed. The primary objective of this study was to determine its audiometric characteristics and evolution. The secondary objective was to gather evidence for possible associated auditory processing disorders, learning difficulties or psychiatric conditions, with the aim of establishing a diagnostic and management algorithm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-center retrospective cohort study included all patients presenting PHA. Clinical, medical, psychological and speech therapy data we

Subclinical hearing loss in women with polycystic ovary syndrome: a case-control study using extended high-frequency audiometry.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) exhibit hearing loss and if so, to identify the specific frequencies involved using extended high-frequency audiometry. METHODS: This single-centre, prospective, cross-sectional case-control study included 39 women with PCOS (diagnosed according to the Rotterdam criteria) and 39 age-matched controls. All participants underwent otoscopic examination, tympanometry, conventional pure-tone audiometry (250-8,000 Hz), and extended high-frequency audiometry (up to 12,500 Hz). Speech reception thresholds (SRT) and speech disc

[Synopsis of results with 1,300 children with language developmental delay from the etiopathogenetic, audiologic and speech pathology viewpoint].

This study presents the results of 1,305 children with speech disorders. The examination included ENT inspection, audiometry, speech evaluations and if required, psychological tests. In 48% we found hearing loss, most frequently in the age-group up to 4 years. In 95% hearing loss fluctuated about 20 dB, caused by malfunction of the tube or by adenoids, not only in autumn and winter, but throughout the year. In this case, the total hearing input of these children is reduced. In only 5% we found cochlear hearing loss. In hearing-impaired children the speech development was significantly depresse

Cochlear Implantation Benefits for Patients with Trauma-Induced Bilateral Hearing Loss: A Retrospective Analysis.

BACKGROUND Accidental or intentional head trauma can result in degrees of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), but if the cochlear nerve is intact, cochlear implantation is the main option to restore hearing. This retrospective study evaluated outcomes from cochlear implantation in 9 patients with bilateral severe SNHL after major head trauma. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 9 patients who lost their hearing (deep hearing impairment) due to major head trauma and were qualified for cochlear implantation. Before surgery, each patient underwent tonal and speech audiometry in free field, usi

[A factor analysis of cochleovestibular findings. (author's transl)].

Using the variables auditory threshold, speech audiometry, SISI, ABLB, stapedius reflex, Carhart-test, Békésy audiometry and calorization three factors could be extracted: 1. The quality of peripheral speech-coding in combination with central processing; 2. the degree of damage of the inner ear (threshold, distance between hearing-threshold and reflex-threshold, SISI and calorization); 3. a retrocochlear factor. SISI and ABLB are both tests concerning the inner ear, but must be regarded separately as it is to be supposed that these two findings are caused be two different pathologic processes.

[Otitis media in patients with Down's syndrome].

61 patients with Down's syndrome were examined. Otitis media was diagnosed in 19 patients. Conductive hearing impairment after otitis media was observed in pure tone audiometry and speech audiometry. It was emphasized that conductive hearing loss in children with Down's syndrome is a very important factor in retarded speech development. Children with recurrent otitis media were treated by surgery (9 adenotomies) and conservative treatment such as insufflation and catheterisation of Eustachian tubes, pharmacotherapy. Treatment of otitis media was difficult because of anatomical anomalies of fac

[Value of preliminary hearing tests].

Investigation of hearing with whispered and colloquial speech and also tuning fork tests are used routinely by many otologists. A different group of otologists find the tests inconsistent and unreliable. This controversy has probably developed because the audiometer has replaced the tuning fork in hearing measurement. The hearing tests with the whispered and colloquial speech are also a little unsafe. However, they are important orientating hearing tests checking the result of audiometry. Some principles of the investigation of hearing with whispered and colloquial speech and the Weber- and Ri

Neuropathology of auditory agnosia following bilateral temporal lobe lesions: a case study.

Our patient was first diagnosed with auditory agnosia following his second cerebral vascular accident (CVA) in 1975 when he was 37 years old. Comprehensive follow-up examinations of auditory function were periodically conducted until his sudden death 15 years later. His brain was studied postmortem for neuropathology. Initial pure-tone audiometry revealed moderate sensorineural hearing loss in the right ear and mild sensorineural hearing loss in the left ear. However, repeated pure-tone audiometry revealed that thresholds became progressively poorer over time, bilaterally. Speech audiometry of
