Atypical organisation of the auditory cortex in dyslexia as revealed by MEG.

Neuroanatomical and -radiological studies have converged to suggest an atypical organisation in the temporal bank of the left-hemispheric Sylvian fissure for dyslexia. Against the background of this finding, we applied high temporal resolution magnetoencephalography (MEG) to investigate functional aspects of the left-hemispheric auditory cortex in 11 right-handed dyslexic children (aged 8-13 years) and nine matched normal subjects (aged 8-14 years). Event-related field components during a passive oddball paradigm with pure tones and consonant-vowel syllables were evaluated. The first major pea

Postnatal development of evoked responses in the auditory cortex of the cat.

Postnatal development of the auditory evoked cortical response was investigated in the cat by laminar field potential analysis. Responses were induced by electrical stimulation of the cochlear nuclear complex and by sonic stimulation under sodium pentobarbital anesthesia. As is well known, the auditory evoked cortical response in adult cats is a diphasic positive-negative wave in the superficial cortical layers and a negative-positive wave in the deeper cortical layers. By contrast, the cortical response in neonatal kittens was a monophasic negative wave in the superficial cortical layers and

Altered auditory attention and functional connectivity in the auditory cortex of children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Previous studies have identified both auditory attention deficits and functional connectivity abnormalities in auditory brain regions in children with ADHD. However, auditory attention deficits are prevalent in children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), but the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms remain unclear, particularly the direct relationship between auditory attention performance and auditory cortical connectivity, which our study uniquely addresses. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between auditory attention deficits and fun

Response of the primary auditory cortex to electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve in the congenitally deaf white cat.

Neural activity plays an important role in the development and maintenance of sensory pathways. However, while there is considerable experience using cochlear implants in both congenitally deaf adults and children, little is known of the effects of a hearing loss on the development of the auditory cortex. In the present study, cortical evoked potentials, field potentials, and multi- and single-unit activity evoked by electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve were used to study the functional organisation of the auditory cortex in the adult congenitally deaf white cat. The absence of click-e

Early unilateral auditory deprivation increases 2-deoxyglucose uptake in contralateral auditory cortex of juvenile Mongolian gerbils.

The effects of early onset, unilateral conductive hearing loss on tone-induced 2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) uptake in the auditory cortex of juvenile Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) were studied. Atresia of the left ear canal was induced at postnatal day 9 (P9) to achieve reversible auditory deprivation prior to onset of hearing (around P12). Atresia either persisted (ATR, n=4) or the canal was opened 15 min before the 2-DG experiments (RE, n=4) at P27. Control animals were either non-deprived (CON, n=4), or their left ears were plugged acutely (PAX, n=4). In PAX, 2-DG uptake in primary aud

Perirhinal input to auditory cortex supports memory-guided sensory perception.

Through learning and memory, the cortex dynamically forms sensory associations to guide our behavior in an ever-changing environment. How memory-related brain regions, such as the medial-temporal lobe, influence sensory cortex to support this process remains unclear. Here, we used two-photon calcium imaging of axonal projections from the perirhinal (PRh) cortex to the auditory cortex during learning and generalization of an auditory discrimination task. PRh input in the auditory cortex increased during learning and influenced performance in a categorization task. Chemogenetically silencing PRh

Auditory cortex hyperconnectivity before rTMS is correlated with tinnitus improvement.

INTRODUCTION: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been used as a potential treatment for tinnitus; however, its effectiveness is variable and unpredictable. We hypothesized that resting-state functional connectivity before rTMS may be correlated with rTMS treatment effectiveness. METHODS: We applied 1-Hz rTMS to the left primary auditory (A1) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortices (DLPFC) of 10 individuals with tinnitus and 10 age-matched controls. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies were performed approximately one week before rTMS. Seed-based

Relieving ferroptosis may partially reverse neurodegeneration of the auditory cortex.

Central presbycusis is caused by degradation of the auditory centre during ageing. Its main characteristics are difficulties in understanding language and localizing sound. Presbycusis is an increasingly critical public health problem, but the underlying molecular mechanism has not been fully elucidated. Ferroptosis is a form of regulated cell death caused by iron- and reactive oxygen species-induced lipid peroxidation. Ferroptosis is related to many pathological processes, but whether it participates in the degeneration of the auditory system remains unclear. To investigate this, we measured

Reading-induced shifts of perceptual speech representations in auditory cortex.

Learning to read requires the formation of efficient neural associations between written and spoken language. Whether these associations influence the auditory cortical representation of speech remains unknown. Here we address this question by combining multivariate functional MRI analysis and a newly-developed 'text-based recalibration' paradigm. In this paradigm, the pairing of visual text and ambiguous speech sounds shifts (i.e. recalibrates) the perceptual interpretation of the ambiguous sounds in subsequent auditory-only trials. We show that it is possible to retrieve the text-induced per

Noise exposure enhances auditory cortex responses related to hyperacusis behavior.

Hyperacusis, a marked intolerance to normal environmental sound, is a common symptom in patients with tinnitus, Williams syndrome, autism, and other neurologic diseases. It has been suggested that an imbalance of excitation and inhibition in the central auditory system (CAS) may play an important role in hyperacusis. Recent studies found that noise exposure, one of the most common causes of hearing loss and tinnitus, can increase the auditory cortex (AC) response, presumably by increasing the gain of the AC. However, it is not clear whether the increased cortical response will affect sound sen

Avoidance learning facilitates temporal processing in the primary auditory cortex.

The primary auditory cortex is now known to be involved in learning and memory, as well as auditory perception. For example, spectral tuning often shifts toward or to the frequency of the conditioned stimulus during associative learning. As previous research has focused on tonal frequency, less is known about how learning might alter temporal parameters of response in the auditory cortex. This study addressed the effects of learning on the fidelity of temporal processing. Adult male rats were trained to avoid shock that was signaled by an 8.0 kHz tone. A novel control group received non-contin

Dopaminergic modulation of auditory cortex-dependent memory consolidation through mTOR.

Previous studies in the auditory cortex of Mongolian gerbils on discrimination learning of the direction of frequency-modulated tones (FMs) revealed that long-term memory formation involves activation of the dopaminergic system, activity of the protein kinase mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), and protein synthesis. This led to the hypothesis that the dopaminergic system might modulate memory formation via regulation of mTOR, which is implicated in translational control. Here, we report that the D1/D5 dopamine receptor agonist SKF-38393 substantially improved gerbils' FM discrimination lear

Frontal cortex reactivity differentiates between schizophrenic subtypes: auditory ERP-evidence.

OBJECTIVES: To extend the hypothesis that late auditory EP shifts represent pathophysiologcial markers in schizophrenia. METHODS: Early negative (±100 μs) and late positive (>300 ms) auditory oddball and CNV responses are topographically compared in 3 medicated schizophrenic subtypes. RESULTS: Only late cortical responses differentiate between paranoid, residual and disorganised schizophrenia. Core features of the deficit residual state encompass low-voltage N2P3 responses and missing central initial CNV components. Both paranoid and disorganised schizophrenics show a distinctive reactivity

Secondary auditory cortex mediates a sensorimotor mechanism for action timing.

The ability to accurately determine when to perform an action is a fundamental brain function and vital to adaptive behavior. The behavioral mechanism and neural circuit for action timing, however, remain largely unknown. Using a new, self-paced action timing task in mice, we found that deprivation of auditory, but not somatosensory or visual input, disrupts learned action timing. The hearing effect was dependent on the auditory feedback derived from the animal's own actions, rather than passive environmental cues. Neuronal activity in the secondary auditory cortex was found to be both correla

Parallel and distributed encoding of speech across human auditory cortex.

Speech perception is thought to rely on a cortical feedforward serial transformation of acoustic into linguistic representations. Using intracranial recordings across the entire human auditory cortex, electrocortical stimulation, and surgical ablation, we show that cortical processing across areas is not consistent with a serial hierarchical organization. Instead, response latency and receptive field analyses demonstrate parallel and distinct information processing in the primary and nonprimary auditory cortices. This functional dissociation was also observed where stimulation of the primary a

Depression of auditory cortex excitability by transcranial alternating current stimulation.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a type of noninvasive brain stimulation technique that has been shown to modulate motor, cognitive and memory function. Direct electrophysiological evidence of an interaction between tACS and the auditory cortex excitability has rarely been reported. Different stimulation parameters and areas of tACS may have different influence on the regulatory results. In this study, 11-Hz tACS was applied to the auditory cortex of 12 subjects with normal hearing in order to explore its effects on the auditory steady-state response (ASSR). The results i

Multimodal lexical processing in auditory cortex is literacy skill dependent.

Literacy is a uniquely human cross-modal cognitive process wherein visual orthographic representations become associated with auditory phonological representations through experience. Developmental studies provide insight into how experience-dependent changes in brain organization influence phonological processing as a function of literacy. Previous investigations show a synchrony-dependent influence of letter presentation on individual phoneme processing in superior temporal sulcus; others demonstrate recruitment of primary and associative auditory cortex during cross-modal processing. We sou

Environmental enrichment increases paired-pulse depression in rat auditory cortex.

Temporal features are important for the identification of natural sounds. Earlier studies have shown that cortical processing of temporal information can be altered by long-term experience with modulated sounds. In a previous study, we observed that environmental enrichment dramatically increased the response of cortical neurons to single tone and noise burst stimuli in both awake and anesthetized rats. Here, we evaluate how enrichment influences temporal information processing in the auditory cortex. We recorded responses to repeated tones and noise bursts in awake rats using epidural evoked

Phase Delay of the 40 Hz Auditory Steady-State Response Localizes to Left Auditory Cortex in Schizophrenia.

Background. The auditory steady state response (ASSR) is generated in bilateral auditory cortex and is the most used electroencephalographic (EEG) or magnetoencephalographic measure of gamma band abnormalities in schizophrenia. While the finding of reduced 40-Hz ASSR power and phase consistency in schizophrenia have been replicated many times, the 40-Hz ASSR phase locking angle (PLA), which assesses oscillation latency or phase delay, has rarely been examined. Furthermore, whether 40-Hz ASSR phase delay in schizophrenia is lateralized or common to left and right auditory cortical generators is
