Neurodegeneration after repeated noise trauma in the mouse lower auditory pathway.

High intensity noise exposure leads to a permanent shift in auditory thresholds (PTS), affecting both peripheral (cochlear) tissue and the central auditory system. Studies have shown that a noise-induced hearing loss results in significant cell loss in several auditory structures. Degeneration can be demonstrated within hours after noise exposure, particularly in the lower auditory pathway, and continues to progress over days and weeks following the trauma. However, there is limited knowledge about the effects of recurring acoustic trauma. Repeated noise exposure has been demonstrated to incre

Intrinsic Noise Improves Speech Recognition in a Computational Model of the Auditory Pathway.

Noise is generally considered to harm information processing performance. However, in the context of stochastic resonance, noise has been shown to improve signal detection of weak sub- threshold signals, and it has been proposed that the brain might actively exploit this phenomenon. Especially within the auditory system, recent studies suggest that intrinsic noise plays a key role in signal processing and might even correspond to increased spontaneous neuronal firing rates observed in early processing stages of the auditory brain stem and cortex after hearing loss. Here we present a computatio

Binaural Beats through the Auditory Pathway: From Brainstem to Connectivity Patterns.

Binaural beating is a perceptual auditory illusion occurring when presenting two neighboring frequencies to each ear separately. Several controversial claims have been attributed to binaural beats regarding their ability to entrain human brain activity and mood, in both the scientific literature and the marketing realm. Here, we sought to address those questions in a robust fashion using a single-blind, active-controlled protocol. To do so, we compared the effects of binaural beats with a control beat stimulation (monaural beats, known to entrain brain activity but not mood) across four distin

Latency-dependent filtering and compact representation of the complete auditory pathway response.

Auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) include the auditory brainstem response (ABR), middle latency response (MLR), and cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs), each one covering a specific latency range and frequency band. For this reason, ABR, MLR, and CAEP are usually recorded separately using different protocols. This article proposes a procedure providing a latency-dependent filtering and down-sampling of the AEP responses. This way, each AEP component is appropriately filtered, according to its latency, and the complete auditory pathway response is conveniently represented (with the mini

Phonotactic steering and representation of directional information in the ascending auditory pathway of a cricket.

Directional hearing is crucial for animals depending on acoustic signals to locate a mate. We focused on crickets to explore the reliability of directional information forwarded to the brain by the ascending auditory interneuron AN1, which is crucial for phonotactic behavior. We presented calling song from -45° to +45° in steps of 3° and compared the phonotactic steering of females walking on a trackball with the directional responses of AN1. Forty percent of females showed good steering behavior and changed their walking direction when the speaker passed the body's longitudinal axis. The bila

Age-dependent changes of calcium related activity in the central auditory pathway.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) represents one of the most common chronic health problems that faces an aging population. In the peripheral auditory system, aging is accompanied by functional loss or degeneration of sensory as well as non-sensory tissue. It has been recently described that besides the degeneration of cochlear structures, the central auditory system is also involved in ARHL. Although mechanisms of central presbycusis are not well understood, previous animal studies have reported some signs of central neurodegeneration in the lower auditory pathway. Moreover, changes in neurophy

Central acoustic tract in an echolocating bat: an extralemniscal auditory pathway to the thalamus.

To determine the sources and targets of auditory pathways that bypass the inferior colliculus in the mustache bat, we injected WGA-HRP in the medial geniculate body and related auditory nuclei of the thalamus as well as in the lower brainstem. We used electrophysiological methods to verify that the injection electrode was in an area responsive to sound. The only thalamic injections that produced retrograde transport to cells in auditory nuclei caudal to the inferior colliculus were those that included the suprageniculate nucleus. These injections labeled a group of large multipolar cells lying

[Anatomy of the central auditory pathway. Demonstration with horseradish peroxidase in the guinea pig].

The neurones of the afferent and efferent auditory pathways were labelled by axonally transported horseradish peroxidase. The first neurone of the ascending system is the acoustic nerve with the spiral ganglion. These fibres terminate mainly in the ventral cochlear nucleus (VCN). The neurones of the latter chiefly run to the contralateral superior olivary complex (SOC), whereas the neurones of the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) terminate mainly in the central nucleus of the contralateral inferior colliculus (IC). The nerve cells of the superior olivary complex and nuclei of the lateral lemniscu

BACKGROUND AND EVOKED ACTIVITY IN THE AUDITORY PATHWAY: EFFECTS OF NOISE-SHOCK PAIRING.

Unanesthetized cats with electrodes permanently implanted along the auditory pathway were presented first with suistained " white" noise stimuli and then with the same noise paired with subcutaneous electric shocks. Pairing noise with shock decreased both background and noise-evoked activity inthe inferior colliculus, and, in some cats, also in the cochlear nucleus, trapezoid body, and at the round window. No changes occurred in medial geniculate or auditory cortex recordings. The effects in the inferior colliculusdo not depend on changes in the degree of arousal of the animal, on change in th

Redox activation of excitatory pathways in auditory neurons as mechanism of age-related hearing loss.

Age-related hearing (ARHL) loss affects a large part of the human population with a major impact on our aging societies. Yet, underlying mechanisms are not understood, and no validated therapy or prevention exists. NADPH oxidases (NOX), are important sources of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the cochlea and might therefore be involved in the pathogenesis of ARHL. Here we investigate ARHL in a mouse model. Wild type mice showed early loss of hearing and cochlear integrity, while animals deficient in the NOX subunit p22phox remained unaffected up to six months. Genes of the excitatory pathway

Molecular remodeling of the central auditory pathway in tinnitus revealed by RNA sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a complex neurological condition affecting 10-15% of adults worldwide, characterized by phantom auditory perception without external sound sources. While traditional investigations have focused on discrete auditory structures, emerging evidence suggests tinnitus involves broader alterations across central auditory regions. OBJECTIVE: This study employed transcriptomic analysis to investigate molecular mechanisms underlying salicylate-induced tinnitus across multiple brain regions simultaneously. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 N mice received daily intraperitoneal injections of

Auditory Pathway Features Determined by DTI in Subjects with Unilateral Acoustic Neuroma.

PURPOSE: In the studies concerning the pathology of the auditory pathway in the vestibulocochlear system, few use advanced neuroimaging applications of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) such as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Those who did use reported DTI changes only at the lateral lemniscus and inferior colliculus level. The aim of our study was to determine diffusion changes in the bilateral auditory pathways of subjects with unilateral acoustic neuroma (AN) and compare them with healthy controls. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 15 subjects with unilateral AN along with 11 controls underw

Assessment of responses to cochlear implant stimulation at different levels of the auditory pathway.

This paper reviews characteristics of both the electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP) and analogous measures of cortically evoked responses (CAEP) to electrical stimulation in cochlear implant users. Specific comparisons are made between the two levels of processing for measures of threshold, growth of responses with increasing stimulus level, changes in stimulation electrode and, finally, in temporal response properties. The results are interpreted in a context that ECAPs primarily reflect the characteristics of the electrode-neural interface for an individual ear. CAEPs clearly

Neuroanatomical study on the tecto-suprageniculate-dorsal auditory cortex pathway in the rat.

Previous anatomical and physiological studies suggest that the superior colliculus sends integrated sensory information to the multimodal cortical areas via the thalamic suprageniculate nucleus (SG). However, the detailed distribution of rat tecto-SG axon terminals and SG neurons projecting to the multimodal cortex, as well as synaptic connections between these tectal axons and SG neurons, remains unclear. In this study, the organization of the tecto-thalamo-cortical pathway was investigated via combined injections of anterograde and retrograde tracers followed by light and electron microscopi

Feature- and object-based attentional modulation in the human auditory "where" pathway.

Attending to a visual stimulus feature, such as color or motion, enhances the processing of that feature in the visual cortex. Moreover, the processing of the attended object's other, unattended, features is also enhanced. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to show that attentional modulation in the auditory system may also exhibit such feature- and object-specific effects. Specifically, we found that attending to auditory motion increases activity in nonprimary motion-sensitive areas of the auditory cortical "where" pathway. Moreover, activity in these motion-sensitive areas
