[Auditory perception disorders due to bilateral cortical lesions. An electrophysiology study].

A 78-year-old right handed man with a past history of atrial fibrillation developed in November 1994, a slight right hemiparesis with aphasia which cleared over one month. Head CT scan showed a left middle cerebral artery infarct involving the posterior part of the temporal lobe. In September 1995, a second stroke occurred. Head CT scan revealed a recent right middle cerebral artery infarct within the posterior part of temporal cortex. Auditory agnosia was diagnosed. Auditory evoked potentials recording showed bilateral dysfunction of central auditory pathways mainly over the right hemisphere.

Learning about neurodiversity from parents - Auditory gestalt perception of prelinguistic vocalisations.

BACKGROUND: Infants with Rett syndrome (RTT) may have subtle anomalies in their prelinguistic vocalisations but the detection of these is difficult, since their conspicuous vocalisations are often interspersed with inconspicuous ones. AIMS AND METHODS: Extending a previous study with predominantly non-parents, the present study sampled parents of children with RTT and aimed to examine their gestalt perception of prelinguistic vocalisations. METHODS AND PROCEDURE: Parents (n = 76) of female children with RTT listened to vocalisation recordings from RTT and typically developing (TD) infants, i

Alpha-range visual and auditory stimulation reduces the perception of pain.

BACKGROUND: Alpha power is believed to have an inverse relationship with the perception of pain. Increasing alpha power through an external stimulus may, therefore, induce an analgesic effect. Here, we attempt to modulate the perception of a moderately painful acute laser stimulus by separately entraining three frequencies across the alpha band: 8, 10 and 12 Hz. METHODS: Participants were exposed to either visual or auditory stimulation at three frequencies in the alpha-band range and a control frequency. We collected verbal pain ratings of laser stimuli from participants following 10 minutes

Auditory signal processing in communication: perception and performance of vocal sounds.

Learning and maintaining the sounds we use in vocal communication require accurate perception of the sounds we hear performed by others and feedback-dependent imitation of those sounds to produce our own vocalizations. Understanding how the central nervous system integrates auditory and vocal-motor information to enable communication is a fundamental goal of systems neuroscience, and insights into the mechanisms of those processes will profoundly enhance clinical therapies for communication disorders. Gaining the high-resolution insight necessary to define the circuits and cellular mechanisms

Auditory motion perception activates visual motion areas in early blind subjects.

We have previously shown that some visual motion areas can be specifically recruited by auditory motion processing in blindfolded sighted subjects [Poirier, C., Collignon, O., De Volder, A.G., Renier, L., Vanlierde, A., Tranduy, D., Scheiber, C., 2005. Specific activation of V5 brain area by auditory motion processing: an fMRI study. Brain Res. Cogn. Brain Res. 25, 650-658]. The present fMRI study investigated whether auditory motion processing may recruit the same brain areas in early blind subjects. The task consisted of simultaneously determining both the nature of a sound stimulus (pure to

Short-term effects of single-dose chloral hydrate on neonatal auditory perception: An auditory event-related potential study.

OBJECTIVE: To study the short-term effects of a single-dose chloral hydrate on neonatal auditory perception by measuring auditory event-related potentials (aERPs). METHODS: Thirty-nine full-term neonates, aged 2-28 days and weighing 2980-4350 g, were divided into two groups including a chloral hydrate group (CH group, n = 17) and a non-chloral hydrate control group (non-CH group, n = 22). The CH group was given single-dose chloral hydrate (30 mg/kg) orally before aERPs measurement. An auditory oddball paradigm was used to elicit aERPs. P2 and N2 components of the ERP were recorded from electr

Loudness perception deficits during altered and absent auditory feedback in Parkinson's disease.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) present with speech difficulties including abnormal speech intensity regulation. It is possible that the neural circuitry in speech may be unique and more complex compared to the other major motor symptoms. The current study aimed to provide a better understanding of the sensorimotor integration and loudness perception deficits in PD using an altered intensity feedback (AIF) paradigm. Twenty-six participants with PD and 26 neurologically healthy control participants completed a magnitude production task (normal loudness, 2× louder, 4× louder, and max loud

The Effects of Speaker Head Posture on Auditory Perception of Vocal Masculinity.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of head position on listeners' perception of vocal masculinity. METHODS: Twelve cisgender women were recorded reciting two voiced sentences with varying head positions: baseline, flexed, and extended. Voice samples were cropped and fundamental frequency (fo) was resynthesized to control for any changes in fo across conditions. Twelve cisgender adults were recruited as listeners. Listeners were presented with 144 paired comparisons of speaker samples and were prompted to select the sample that sounded more masculine in each pre

Investigating sensitivity to multi-domain prediction errors in chronic auditory phantom perception.

The perception of a continuous phantom in a sensory domain in the absence of an external stimulus is explained as a maladaptive compensation of aberrant predictive coding, a proposed unified theory of brain functioning. If this were true, these changes would occur not only in the domain of the phantom percept but in other sensory domains as well. We confirm this hypothesis by using tinnitus (continuous phantom sound) as a model and probe the predictive coding mechanism using the established local-global oddball paradigm in both the auditory and visual domains. We observe that tinnitus patients

Multi-modal imaging of the auditory-larynx motor network for voicing perception.

Voicing is one of the most important characteristics of phonetic speech sounds. Despite its importance, voicing perception mechanisms remain largely unknown. To explore auditory-motor networks associated with voicing perception, we firstly examined the brain regions that showed common activities for voicing production and perception using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Results indicated that the auditory and speech motor areas were activated with the operculum parietale 4 (OP4) during both voicing production and perception. Secondly, we used a magnetoencephalography and examined the dy

Auditory Deficits in Audiovisual Speech Perception in Adult Asperger's Syndrome: fMRI Study.

Audiovisual (AV) integration deficits have been proposed to underlie difficulties in speech perception in Asperger's syndrome (AS). It is not known, if the AV deficits are related to alterations in sensory processing at the level of unisensory processing or at levels of conjoint multisensory processing. Functional Magnetic-resonance images (MRI) was performed in 16 adult subjects with AS and 16 healthy controls (HC) matched for age, gender, and verbal IQ as they were exposed to disyllabic AV congruent and AV incongruent nouns. A simple semantic categorization task was used to ensure subjects'

Auditory hallucinations, top-down processing and language perception: a general population study.

BACKGROUND: Studies investigating the underlying mechanisms of hallucinations in patients with schizophrenia suggest that an imbalance in top-down expectations v. bottom-up processing underlies these errors in perception. This study evaluates this hypothesis by testing if individuals drawn from the general population who have had auditory hallucinations (AH) have more misperceptions in auditory language perception than those who have never hallucinated. METHODS: We used an online survey to determine the presence of hallucinations. Participants filled out the Questionnaire for Psychotic Experi

Functional brain changes in auditory phantom perception evoked by different stimulus frequencies.

Bayesian models of brain function such as active inference and predictive coding offer a general theoretical framework with which to explain several aspects of normal and disordered brain function. Of particular interest to the present study is the potential for such models to explain the pathology of auditory phantom perception, i.e. tinnitus. To test this framework empirically, we perform an fMRI experiment on a large clinical sample (n = 75) of the human chronic tinnitus population. The experiment features a within-subject design based on two experimental conditions: subjects were presented

Operator auditory perception and spectral quantification of umbilical artery Doppler ultrasound signals.

OBJECTIVE: An experienced sonographer can by listening to the Doppler audio signals perceive various timbres that distinguish different types of umbilical artery flow despite an unchanged pulsatility index (PI). Our aim was to develop an objective measure of the Doppler audio signals recorded from fetoplacental circulation in a sheep model. METHODS: Various degrees of pathological flow velocity waveforms in the umbilical artery, similar to those in human complicated pregnancies, were induced by microsphere embolization of the placental bed (embolization model, 7 lamb fetuses, 370 Doppler reco

GRM7 variants associated with age-related hearing loss based on auditory perception.

Age-related hearing impairment (ARHI), or presbycusis, is a common condition of the elderly that results in significant communication difficulties in daily life. Clinically, it has been defined as a progressive loss of sensitivity to sound, starting at the high frequencies, inability to understand speech, lengthening of the minimum discernable temporal gap in sounds, and a decrease in the ability to filter out background noise. The causes of presbycusis are likely a combination of environmental and genetic factors. Previous research into the genetics of presbycusis has focused solely on hearin

Electrically evoked hearing perception by functional neurostimulation of the central auditory system.

Perceptional benefits and potential risks of electrical stimulation of the central auditory system are constantly changing due to ongoing developments and technical modifications. Therefore, we would like to introduce current treatment protocols and strategies that might have an impact on functional results of auditory brainstem implants (ABI) in profoundly deaf patients. Patients with bilateral tumours as a result of neurofibromatosis type 2 with complete dysfunction of the eighth cranial nerves are the most frequent candidates for auditory brainstem implants. Worldwide, about 300 patients ha

Improving Auditory Perception in Pediatric Single-Sided Deafness: Use of Cochlear Implants' Direct Connection for Remote Speech Perception Rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: Unilateral cochlear implants (CIs) can restore binaural hearing in single-sided deafness (SSD). Direct stimulation of the CI can be obtained via the Bluetooth connection of a device to the CI, thus excluding the typical-hearing ear. This study aims to investigate the use of CI connectivity features as a rehabilitative strategy in a small cohort of children affected by SSD. METHOD: A newly developed training protocol was presented to children with SSD who have less than 2 years of experience with CI. We developed a user-friendly and short-term (six sessions within 20 days) training pr
