A Navigation and Augmented Reality System for Visually Impaired People.

In recent years, we have assisted with an impressive advance in augmented reality systems and computer vision algorithms, based on image processing and artificial intelligence. Thanks to these technologies, mainstream smartphones are able to estimate their own motion in 3D space with high accuracy. In this paper, we exploit such technologies to support the autonomous mobility of people with visual disabilities, identifying pre-defined virtual paths and providing context information, reducing the distance between the digital and real worlds. In particular, we present ARIANNA+, an extension of A

Prescription AR: a fully-customized prescription-embedded augmented reality display.

In this paper, we present a fully-customized AR display design that considers the user's prescription, interpupillary distance, and taste of fashion. A free-form image combiner embedded inside the prescription lens provides augmented images onto the vision-corrected real world. The optics was optimized for each prescription level, which can reduce the mass production cost while satisfying the user's taste. The foveated optimization method was applied which distributes the pixels in accordance with human visual acuity. Our design can cover myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia, and all

Image Overlay Surgery Based on Augmented Reality: A Systematic Review.

Augmented Reality (AR) applied to surgical guidance is gaining relevance in clinical practice. AR-based image overlay surgery (i.e. the accurate overlay of patient-specific virtual images onto the body surface) helps surgeons to transfer image data produced during the planning of the surgery (e.g. the correct resection margins of tissue flaps) to the operating room, thus increasing accuracy and reducing surgery times. We systematically reviewed 76 studies published between 2004 and August 2018 to explore which existing tracking and registration methods and technologies allow healthcare profess

SoftAR: visually manipulating haptic softness perception in spatial augmented reality.

We present SoftAR, a novel spatial augmented reality (AR) technique based on a pseudo-haptics mechanism that visually manipulates the sense of softness perceived by a user pushing a soft physical object. Considering the limitations of projection-based approaches that change only the surface appearance of a physical object, we propose two projection visual effects, i.e., surface deformation effect (SDE) and body appearance effect (BAE), on the basis of the observations of humans pushing physical objects. The SDE visualizes a two-dimensional deformation of the object surface with a controlled so

Magnetic tracker calibration for an augmented reality system for therapy.

Magnetic trackers are widely used position/orientation measurement devices in interactive computer systems. These trackers output six-degree-of-freedom position and orientation of their receiver coordinates with respect to their transmitter coordinates. It is a potential solution for real-time position/orientation measurement in an augmented reality system for therapy (ART). However, an obstruction to be overcome is that a magnetic tracker is vulnerable to measurement inaccuracy caused by magnetic field distortions (including ferric and non-ferric distortions) when it is used in metallic envir

Closing the Trauma and Critical Care Gap: A Paradigm Shift through Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality.

A nationwide surgeon shortage, particularly with general surgeons and trauma surgeons, continues to plague the civilian and military systems readiness. To fill this shortcoming, we provide a narrative review describing current and potential uses of augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) for synthetic training environments which could significantly improve the Army's wartime medical readiness through improved skills of surgeons and non-surgeon providers. Multiple studies demonstrate the potential benefits of AR/VR in cost, time, and critical medical skills for enhanced care delivery. Whi

Transforming Experience: The Potential of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality for Enhancing Personal and Clinical Change.

During life, many personal changes occur. These include changing house, school, work, and even friends and partners. However, the daily experience shows clearly that, in some situations, subjects are unable to change even if they want to. The recent advances in psychology and neuroscience are now providing a better view of personal change, the change affecting our assumptive world: (a) the focus of personal change is reducing the distance between self and reality (conflict); (b) this reduction is achieved through (1) an intense focus on the particular experience creating the conflict or (2) an

Is 2D-augmented reality precise enough for middle ear endoscopic surgery?

Augmented reality in the operating room enhances surgical precision. Merging information from preoperative 3D imaging into the real-time video during surgery allows for better visualization of critical structures. Displaying an augmented real-time video on a screen requires a 2D/3D to 2D image registration as a preliminary step. An accurate error estimation is crucial for evaluating the system's performance. A reprojection error estimation has been commonly calculated based on a pinhole camera model, which does not accurately represent the optical properties of an endoscope or an operative mic

Semantic Modulation of Spatial Judgments in Augmented Reality: Evidence from fNIRS.

This study examined how different types of semantic relationships modulate cortical activity during spatial judgments in an augmented reality (AR) setting. Participants viewed triads of everyday objects that were either thematically (co-occurring) or functionally (sharing a purpose) related and made spatial judgments varying in reference frame, egocentric (object closest to you?) vs. allocentric (object closest to another? ), and relation type, coordinate (distance-based) vs.categorical (left-right). Cortical activity was measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Results sh

Laparoscopic augmented reality navigation system based on deep learning and SLAM.

The application of video see-through augmented reality (VST-AR) navigation in laparoscopic surgery helps visualize key anatomical structures that are hidden, which can enhance the surgeon’s intraoperative perception and improve the safety of the surgery. In this paper, a VST-AR navigation system oriented towards laparoscopic surgery is proposed. This system only relies on preoperative medical imaging slices, without the need for additional equipment. Novel and robust solutions are proposed for two main sub-problems: non-invasive registration and registration updating. Firstly, a vision Transfo

Augmented Reality-Assisted Transcanal Endoscopic Ear Surgery for Middle Ear Cholesteatoma.

Background: The indications for transcanal endoscopic ear surgery (TEES) for middle ear cholesteatoma have expanded for cases involving mastoid extension. However, TEES is not indicated for all cases with mastoid extension. In addition, predicting the extent of external auditory canal (EAC) removal needed for cholesteatoma resection is not always easy. The purpose of this study was to use augmented reality (AR) to project the lesion onto an intraoperative endoscopic image to predict EAC removal requirements and select an appropriate surgical approach. Methods: In this study, patients showing m
