Equity and representation in cardiology research: A comprehensive analysis of authorship from low and low-middle income countries in cardiology journals.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality, disproportionately affecting low-income and low-middle-income countries (LICs/LMICs). Despite this, cardiology research commonly comes from affluent regions. This study assessed the authorship trends from LICs/LMICs in cardiology journals listed in PubMed from 2000 to 2022. The World Bank list was used to classify countries. The total number of articles published in the 138 cardiology journals was 529,359. The percentage of articles that included at least one author affiliated with LICs/LMICs institutions was 0.11 % and 2.23 %, respecti

Authorship Inequity in Global Health Research Conducted in Low- and Middle-Income Countries and Published in High-Income Country Family Medicine Journals.

PURPOSE: The current structures of global health research and academic authorship have resulted in underrepresentation of authors from low- and middle-income countries. Although authorship inequity has been shown in other specialties, the current status of authorship in family medicine has not been examined. METHODS: We conducted a bibliometric analysis of World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) journals based in high-income countries for articles describing research conducted in low-income countries, lower-middle-income countries, and upper-middle-income countries from 2018 to 2023. The acceptability of financial incentives to support service engagement of adults experiencing homelessness and mental illness: a qualitative study of key stakeholder perspectives Authorship.

PURPOSE: Evidence suggests financial incentives may effectively support service engagement among people experiencing homelessness, but literature related to their acceptability in this population is limited. This study used qualitative methods to explore stakeholder perspectives on the acceptability of using financial incentives to promote service engagement among homeless adults with mental illness. METHODS: As part of a larger mixed-methods pragmatic trial of a community-based brief case management program in Toronto, Canada, twenty-two trial participants were purposefully recruited to part

How many orthopedic surgeons does it take to write a research article? 50 years of authorship proliferation in and internationalization of the orthopedic surgery literature.

Publications are considered to indicate academic achievement and can lead to various rewards, including job opportunities and research funding. Recent years have seen a rising trend in the number of articles published, multiple authorship, and internationalization of the biomedical literature. The goal of this study was to analyze the trends in authorship over the past 50 years to determine whether the orthopedic literature parallels trends seen in other areas of the biomedical literature. We performed an observational study with analysis of the number of authors and geographic origin of artic

A review of authorship in herpes simplex virus type-2 (HSV-2) research conducted in low-income and middle-income countries between 2000 and 2020.

INTRODUCTION: Equitable inclusion of low-income and middle-income country (LMIC) researchers and women in research authorship is a priority. A review of progress in addressing WHO-identified priorities provided an opportunity to examine the geographical and gender distribution of authorship in herpes simplex virus type-2 (HSV-2) research. METHODS: Publications addressing five areas prioritised in a WHO workshop and published between 2000 and 2020 were identified. Data on author country, gender, authorship position and research funding source were collected by manuscript review and internet se

Equity in global health research in the new millennium: trends in first-authorship for randomized controlled trials among low- and middle-income country researchers 1990-2013.

BACKGROUND: Developing the research capacity of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) has been shown to be one of the key ways that international health programmes and health research can create sustained benefit in these countries. The aim of this study was to examine trends in first-authorship for researchers from LMIC institutions (LMIC first-authors) over the period 1990-2013. METHODS: This study systematically reviewed research articles about randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis (TB) conducted in LMICs from 1990 to 2013, and identified the institut

Responsible use of large language models in manuscript authorship, peer review, and editorial processes: a Delphi consensus among editors-in-chief of anaesthesia and pain medicine journals (RULE-AP).

This article presents a Delphi consensus developed by a panel of editors-in-chief of anaesthesiology and pain medicine journals to guide the responsible use of large language models (LLMs) in academic publishing. LLMs offer potential benefits for scientific writing, including language editing, summarisation, translation, information organisation, and support for non-native English speakers, but their misuse raises concerns about accuracy, transparency, confidentiality, and research integrity. Through a three-round modified Delphi process involving 53 editors-in-chief or their delegates, 59 sta

Three decades of transformation: a bibliometric study of gender and geographic trends in international orthopaedic journal publications.

AIMS: Academic journals are essential for advancing knowledge, yet gender disparities in orthopaedic authorship persist. While most previous studies focus authorship trends on mainly North American journals, this study analyzes gender distribution among primary and senior authors, along with the geographical origins of articles, in three orthopaedic journals based in Europe and North America. METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional analysis was conducted on articles published from 2000 to 2004, 2010 to 2014, and 2020 to 2024 in the following journals: Acta Orthopaedica (AO), The Bone & Join

[The "good author"].

This article examines the notion of the "good author" within systems of scientific evaluation, defining it through observable practices: the relevance of research questions, methodological adequacy, and transparency throughout the manuscript-writing process. It emphasizes accountability in collaboration, properly justified authorship-free of honorary practices-and editorial and regulatory integrity. In addition, by analogy with journal indexing, it proposes an "index of responsible authorship" grounded in verifiable indicators and multidimensional profiles, rather than in prestige or impact. I

Global Trends in the Neurosurgical Literature: A 20-Year Bibliometric Analysis by Country Income Group.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Despite growing global interest in neurosurgical equity, research output remains concentrated in high-income countries (HICs), with limited representation from lower-middle-income countries (LMICs). Although the global neurosurgery movement has highlighted these disparities, its impact on authorship and research equity is unclear. This study uses bibliometric analysis to evaluate 20-year trends in neurosurgical publications, focusing on authorship patterns across World Bank income groups. METHODS: A bibliometric analysis of publications with topic of "neurosurgery"

A Protocol for a Scoping Review Comparative Bibliometric Analysis of Infectious Disease Research in Africa.

Introduction: Evidence on authorship trends of health research conducted about or in Africa shows that there is a lack of local researchers in the first and last authorship positions, with high income country collaborations taking up these positions. The differences in authorship calls into question power imbalances in global health research and who benefits from the production of new discoveries and innovations. Health studies may further go on to inform policy and clinical practice within the region having an impact on public health. This paper aims to compare the differences in authorship b

Global disparities in pediatric neurosurgery research: a 20-year bibliometric analysis by country income group.

PURPOSE: Pediatric neurosurgical diseases are most prevalent in low-income (LICs) and low-middle-income countries (LMICs), yet these regions have limited representation in global neurosurgical workforce. To assess whether scholarly output reflects this burden, we conducted a 20-year bibliometric analysis of pediatric neurosurgery publications, evaluating trends by country income level. METHODS: We analyzed publications on "pediatric neurosurgery" indexed in Web of Science from 2005-2024. Author affiliations were categorized by World Bank income groups: high-income (HIC), upper-middle-income (
