Mirtazapine treatment in a subject with autistic disorder and fetishism.

The presence of inappropriate sexual behaviors in individuals with autistic disorder is one of the important factors disturbing their social adaptation and distressing their families and environment. Therefore, appropriate management of these behaviors seems necessary. This case report describes a 13-year-old male with diagnosis of autistic disorder and fetishistic behavior. His fetishistic behavior was treated successfully using mirtazapine 15 mg/day. The clinical picture and efficacy of mirtazapine will be discussed.

Autistic spectrum disorders. 1: Presentation and assessment.

As many as six in every 1000 children may be affected by an autistic spectrum disorder. Characterised by a triad of social communication difficulties, these children exhibit impairment in communication and socialisation, and restricted and repetitive interests, movements and activities. This article will discuss the distinction between autism, Asperger's syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder. Assessment should include a history of the child's development, observation, school report and a profile of the child's strengths and weaknesses. However, it is important that potential differenti

Autistic spectrum disorders 2: diagnosis and management.

As many as six in every 1000 children may be affected by an autistic spectrum disorder. The previous article of this two-part series discussed the distinction between autism, Asperger's syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder, and examined the assessment process. This article looks at potential differential diagnoses that must be considered, as well as conditions associated with autism. Many theories about the causes of autism have been suggested, including the MMR vaccine. Recent research has suggested that there is no link between the vaccine and autism. There is no cure for autism, bu

Pitch perception in children with autistic spectrum disorders.

This study investigated the accuracy of musical pitch detection in children with autistic spectrum disorders as compared with typically developing children. Seventeen children on the autistic spectrum (M(age) =9.34, SD(age) =1.12) and 13 typically developing, chronological age-matched children (M(age) =9.13, SD(age) =1.68) took part in the current study. Children were required to listen to four tones, which were paired with four different pictures and asked to learn the combinations. The children were then assessed for their ability to identify the previously learned tones, when they were pres

Tics associated with autistic and pervasive developmental disorders.

Coincident cases of Tourette syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorders increasingly have been reported in the literature. Coincident cases currently number around 90. A minority of cases have been associated with cases of Tourette syndrome and tics in other family members; this has led some authors to suggest that Tourette syndrome may be responsible for some of the genetic heterogeneity in Pervasive Developmental Disorders. The literature is reviewed, along with some aspects of the neurobiology of the two conditions with arguments for and against this hypothesis.

Exploring ferroptosis: Unraveling its potential role in autistic spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a diverse neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by ambiguous etiological mechanisms and the absence of recognized disease-modifying pharmacotherapies. Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent and lipid peroxidation-driven mechanism of regulated cell death, has been associated with neurodevelopment and neurodegeneration, prompting interest in its potential role in ASD. This narrative review consolidates from molecular and clinical studies, animal models, and in vitro systems to assess ferroptosis as a candidate mechanistic pathway, biomarker source, and therapeutic t

Assessment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Young Autistic Children.

OBJECTIVE: Co-occurring attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is present for many autistic children and is associated with increased impairments, unique treatment needs, and decreased response to autism-specific interventions. Diagnosing ADHD in autistic children during the preschool and early school-age periods presents unique challenges for clinicians. METHODS: This work describes a clinically informed diagnostic framework for assessing ADHD in young autistic children. Clinical complexities are illustrated using descriptive data from caregiver and clinician ratings of ADHD symptom

Motor Competence in Autistic Children with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Children with autism exhibit deficits in fundamental motor skills, which are intensified when associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). OBJECTIVE: To correlate motor competence in children with autism, autism levels according to the CARS scale, and the association with ADHD. METHODS: This cross-sectional study assessed motor competence using the Motor Competence Assessment (MCA), the severity of Autism Spectrum Disorder by Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), and the presence of clinical signs for ADHD using Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham (SNAP-IV)

[Autistic female with anxiety disorder and superior mesenteric artery syndrome].

An anxiety disorder can manifest in multiple ways. We saw a 21-year-old woman with an anxiety disorder in combination with superior mesenteric artery syndrome. For we know, this is the first description of this combination. There was also hypersensitivity to certain foods and rigid thinking patterns, and an autism spectrum disorder was discovered later. The recognition of the influence of autism on comorbid disorders is important in order to create an individual adapted treatment protocol.

Altered heavy metals and transketolase found in autistic spectrum disorder.

Autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are developmental brain disorders with complex, obscure, and multifactorial etiology. Our recent clinical survey of patient records from ASD children under the age of 6 years and their age-matched controls revealed evidence of abnormal markers of thiol metabolism, as well as a significant alteration in deposition of several heavy metal species, particularly arsenic, mercury, copper, and iron in hair samples between the groups. Altered thiol metabolism from heavy metal toxicity may be responsible for the biochemical alterations in transketolase, and are

MRI findings in 77 children with non-syndromic autistic disorder.

BACKGROUND: The clinical relevance of MR scanning in children with autism is still an open question and must be considered in light of the evolution of this technology. MRI was judged to be of insufficient value to be included in the standard clinical evaluation of autism according to the guidelines of the American Academy of Neurology and Child Neurology Society in 2000. However, this statement was based on results obtained from small samples of patients and, more importantly, included mostly insufficient MRI sequences. Our main objective was to evaluate the prevalence of brain abnormalities

Urinary methylxanthine and autistic disorder: absence of previously reported correlation.

We were unable to reveal significant difference in the levels of xanthine and methylxanthines in the urine samples from 59 patients diagnosed with autistic symptoms and 64 age- and sex-matched normal volunteers. Our data suggest that abnormalities in xanthine and methylxanthine excretion (US Patent 20020019406 A1, Feb. 12, 2002) represent distincly uncommon symptoms in autism.

Health experiences and outcomes of autistic and non-autistic adults with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and hypermobility spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has indicated an association between hypermobility and autism. This study examined whether being autistic affects diagnosis, symptoms, and health experiences of people with hypermobility, including hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD). We compare three groups: autistic adults, non-autistic adults, and adults who are not autistic but have a high level of autistic traits. Additionally, we examined which health and social factors predicted self-reported physical and mental health outcomes for autistic and non-autistic p

Post-traumatic stress disorder in autistic and non-autistic adults: The impact of appraisals on reactions to traumatic events.

Research suggests autistic people experience greater post-traumatic stress disorder symptom severity than non-autistic people following traumatic events. Post-trauma appraisals are fundamental in cognitive models of post-traumatic stress disorder, but have not been explored in autistic people. We aimed to explore whether we could replicate effects of heightened trauma exposure and post-traumatic stress disorder symptom severity in autistic adults, and examine how post-traumatic appraisals affect the association between autism and post-traumatic stress disorder symptom severity. 'The true me': Unravelling the dual narrative of borderline personality disorder and autistic spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVES: There is growing recognition that some individuals who receive a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) are later diagnosed with autism. However, existing literature on this topic remains limited. This study aimed to explore the experiences of individuals diagnosed with BPD prior to autism, how they made sense of these diagnoses, navigated clinical systems and learnt to manage the complex challenges associated with this diagnostic sequence. METHODS: Thirteen (6 male, 6 female, 1 non-binary) adult participants took part in semi-structured interviews exploring their diag

Anxiety disorders in children and adolescents with autistic spectrum disorders: a meta-analysis.

There is considerable evidence that children and adolescents with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) are at increased risk of anxiety and anxiety disorders. However, it is less clear which of the specific DSM-IV anxiety disorders occur most in this population. The present study used meta-analytic techniques to help clarify this issue. A systematic review of the literature identified 31 studies involving 2,121 young people (aged <18 years) with ASD, and where the presence of anxiety disorder was assessed using standardized questionnaires or diagnostic interviews. Across studies, 39.6% of young p

Autistic traits in borderline personality Disorder: Relationship to interpersonal traumatic experiences.

INTRODUCTION: Detecting autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) traits in BPD patients is challenging due to overlapping symptoms such as impulsivity, emotion instability, self-injury behavior and interpersonal difficulties. Theory of mind impairments and other ASD features may increase vulnerability to interpersonal trauma and therefore to BPD symptoms. This study examines ASD traits in BPD patients and their impact on interpersonal trauma exposure. METHOD: 65 BPD patients and 40 controls were assessed using the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ 10) and the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS-2). Interpers
