Optical computer recognition of facial expressions associated with stress induced by performance demands.

Application of computer vision to track changes in human facial expressions during long-duration spaceflight may be a useful way to unobtrusively detect the presence of stress during critical operations. To develop such an approach, we applied optical computer recognition (OCR) algorithms for detecting facial changes during performance while people experienced both low- and high-stressor performance demands. Workload and social feedback were used to vary performance stress in 60 healthy adults (29 men, 31 women; mean age 30 yr). High-stressor scenarios involved more difficult performance tasks

Effect of observer's cultural background and masking condition of target face on facial expression recognition for machine-learning dataset.

Facial expression recognition (FER) is significantly influenced by the cultural background (CB) of observers and the masking conditions of the target face. This study aimed to clarify these factors' impact on FER, particularly in machine-learning datasets, increasingly used in human-computer interaction and automated systems. We conducted an FER experiment with East Asian participants and compared the results with the FERPlus dataset, evaluated by Western raters. Our novel analysis approach focused on variability between images and participants within a "majority" category and the eye-opening

Diagnosis of dental deformities in cephalometry images using support vector machine.

This paper proposes an automated target recognition algorithm using Support Vector Machine (SVM) to extract landmark points for craniofacial features in cephalometry radiograph. The features are extracted by subjecting the radiograph to the Projected Principle Edge Distribution (PPED) algorithm. Edge flags are accumulated in every four columns and spatial distribution of edge flags are represented by a histogram. The resultants are the front end of support vector machine. Vectors, which possess land marks, are separated from all other vectors. The centroid points, automatically determined from

Facial Emotional Expression in Reaction to Internet Gaming Videos Among Young Adults: A Preliminary and Exploratory Study.

The surge in online gaming's popularity has raised concerns regarding excessive engagement particularly among younger generations. Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is increasingly recognized as a clinical concern, underscoring the necessity for early detection and intervention. Although facial expressions provide key emotional insights, their link to symptoms associated with internet gaming addiction remains largely unexplored. In this preliminary study, we investigated facial emotional expressions in response to internet gaming videos among 28 young adults who casually play online games, utiliz

Mobile contingency management for smoking cessation among socioeconomically disadvantaged adults: Protocol for a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Smoking rates remain high among socioeconomically disadvantaged adults. Offering small escalating financial incentives for abstinence (i.e., contingency management [CM]), alongside clinic-based treatment dramatically increases cessation rates in this vulnerable population. However, innovative approaches are needed for those who are less able to attend office visits. The current study will evaluate an automated mobile phone-based CM approach that will allow socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals to remotely earn financial incentives for smoking cessation. METHODS: The investig

Reducing noisy annotations for depression estimation from facial images.

Depression has been considered the most dominant mental disorder over the past few years. To help clinicians effectively and efficiently estimate the severity scale of depression, various automated systems based on deep learning have been proposed. To estimate the severity of depression, i.e., the depression severity score (Beck Depression Inventory-II), various deep architectures have been designed to perform regression using the Euclidean loss. However, they do not consider the label distribution, and they do not learn the relationships between the facial images and BDI-II scores, which can

Child face detection on front passenger seat through deep learning.

OBJECTIVE: One of the main causes of death worldwide among young people are car crashes, and most of these fatalities occur to children who are seated in the front passenger seat and who, at the time of an accident, receive a direct impact from the airbags, which is lethal for children under 13 years of age. The present study seeks to raise awareness of this risk by interior monitoring with a child face detection system that serves to alert the driver that the child should not be sitting in the front passenger seat. METHODS: The system incorporates processing of data collected, elements of de

Deep learning-based 3D forensic facial reconstruction: a volumetric morphological inference approach using a skull-conditioned U-Net.

Forensic facial reconstruction (FFR) is an investigative aid used in cases where primary identifiers such as DNA, dental records, or fingerprints are unavailable or inconclusive. Rather than establishing identity, FFR aims to generate an anatomically plausible facial approximation that may facilitate recognition and help narrow the pool of potential candidates. Reconstructing facial soft tissue from cranial geometry remains an inherently ill-posed inverse problem, as the skull does not uniquely determine the overlying facial morphology. In this study, skull-conditioned facial reconstruction is

Using Automated Coding of Nonverbal Behavior During a Suicide Assessment to Inform Risk Detection: Mixed Cross-Sectional and Exploratory Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Suicide assessments have historically privileged verbal report by the patient, despite the fact that nonverbal behaviors of patients and their clinicians may convey important affective and interpersonal information about suicide risk. Recent advances in computational science enable efficient characterization of rich nonverbal data. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to use automated coding to test whether facial action and head motion exhibited by young adults and their clinical interviewers during a widely used suicide assessment can identify suicidal participants. METHODS: Participant

An evaluation of various parts of face to identify facial paralysis using temporal convolutional neural network model.

Facial paralysis severely changes the individual's life and enlarges the physician's need for precise analysis and grading of facial paralysis for appropriate rehabilitation and treatment. A patient with facial paralysis will have asymmetry of their face, challenging their everyday actions like drinking and eating, and having psychosocial and physical distress owing to their physical form. Conventional models are only reliant on the clinician's decision and so time-consuming and subjective in nature. The notion of intelligent models executing artificial intelligence methods, particularly deep

Chaos-MLP: Chaotic Transform MLP-Like Architecture for Medical Images Multi-Label Recognition Task.

The theory of "three-stage prevention" in view of the body constitution is the key technology of modern Chinese medicine for "Preventive Treatment of Diseases". In particular, automated body constitution recognition (BCR) is an integral part of intelligent Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which is extremely valuable for disease prevention and diagnosis. Actually, BCR is a challenging multi-label recognition task by the TCM composite constitution theory. First, two new databases are constructed, one is a multi-label facial body constitution (MFBC), and another is a multi-label tongue body co

A hybrid deep learning model with feature engineering technique to enhance teacher emotional support on students' engagement for sustainable education.

Understanding students' emotional conditions throughout the learning process is a significant feature of enhancing learning quality. In an academic setting, an extent of emotion is achieved physically or automatically by utilizing a computer. Emotions like curiosity, hope, interest, confusion, enjoyment, anger, pride, shame, frustration, anxiety, and boredom often arise throughout the learning procedure. In educational surroundings, emotions experienced have a robust relationship with a student's academic attainment and personal development. However, developing an emotion detection model utili

Detection of acute periodontal pain from physiological signals.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility of the detection of brief orofacial pain sensations from easily recordable physiological signals by means of machine learning techniques. APPROACH: A total of 47 subjects underwent periodontal probing and indicated each instance of pain perception by means of a push button. Simultaneously, physiological signals were recorded and, subsequently, autonomic indices were computed. By using the autonomic indices as input features of a classifier, a pain indicator based on fusion of the various autonomic mechanisms was achieved. Seven patients were randomly

Estimating sex and age from a face: a forensic approach using machine learning based on photo-anthropometric indexes of the Brazilian population.

The facial analysis permits many investigations, some of the most important of which are craniofacial identification, facial recognition, and age and sex estimation. In forensics, photo-anthropometry describes the study of facial growth and allows the identification of patterns in facial skull development, for example, by using a group of cephalometric landmarks to estimate anthropological information. Previous works presented, as indirect applications, the use of photo-anthropometric measurements to estimate anthropological information such as age and sex. In several areas, automation of manu

[THE STUDY OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS KNOWLEDGE FATIGUE AND THE LEVEL OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE OF STUDENTS USING NEURAL NETWORKS].

The relevance of the study is as follows. Traditional methods of pedagogy do not allow objective and continuous monitoring of the emotional state of each student. The teacher usually relies on subjective observations - facial expressions behavior in a group - which may be inaccurate. At the same time modern technologies provide new opportunities: cameras and sensors backed by AI algorithms are able to automatically recognize facial expressions voice intonations and other signs of an emotional state. There are already commercial solutions for facial emotion recognition which have been used in m

Artificial intelligence in assisted localization of fetal ultrasound standard planes: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Ultrasound imaging has become a vital clinical diagnostic tool due to its cost-effectiveness and absence of ionizing radiation. In fetal ultrasound, the precise localization of standard ultrasound planes is a prerequisite for subsequent quantitative analysis and diagnosis. However, manual identification is highly operator-dependent and subjective, and the multi-planar data acquired by three-dimensional (3D) fetal ultrasound present challenges for efficient localization within large datasets. The objective of this narrative review is to systematically summarize the res

Computational mouse atlases and their application to automatic assessment of craniofacial dysmorphology caused by the Crouzon mutation Fgfr2(C342Y).

Crouzon syndrome is characterized by premature fusion of sutures and synchondroses. Recently, the first mouse model of the syndrome was generated, having the mutation Cys342Tyr in Fgfr2c, equivalent to the most common human Crouzon/Pfeiffer syndrome mutation. In this study, a set of micro-computed tomography (CT) scannings of the skulls of wild-type mice and Crouzon mice were analysed with respect to the dysmorphology caused by Crouzon syndrome. A computational craniofacial atlas was built automatically from the set of wild-type mouse micro-CT volumes using (1) affine and (2) non-rigid image r
