Advanced nitrate removal in sulfur autotrophic denitrification biofilter under dissolved oxygen shock and low temperature enhanced by boron oxide and magnesium oxide: Hydrogen sulfide accumulation and regulation.

Strengthening nitrate removal stability of sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SAD) under environmental stress is of great urgency. This study established a biofilter filled with S0-based filter material modified by boron oxide and magnesium oxide (FMSBMg). Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) accumulation reached 18.89 ± 4.51 mg/L and 7.28 ± 2.03 mg/L in summer and winter. Air and water backwash flow rates of 3 m3/h and 150 L/h could reduce H2S accumulation to below 0.16 mg/L under dissolved oxygen (DO) of 4.4 ± 0.1 mg/L 0.4 ± 0.1 mg/L B3+ and 15.9 ± 0.3 mg/L Mg2+ released from FMSBMg enhanced nitrate remo

Highly Efficient Coremoval of Nitrate and Phosphate Driven by a Sulfur-Siderite Composite Reactive Filler toward Secondary Effluent Polishing.

Reactive fillers consisting of reduced sulfur and iron species (SFe-ReFs) have received increasing attention in tertiary wastewater treatment for nitrate and phosphate coremoval. However, the existing SFe-ReFs suffer from either low performance (e.g., pyrrhotite and pyrite) or unsatisfactory use in terms of combustible risk and residual nonreactive impurities (e.g., sulfur mixing with natural iron ores). Here, we developed a new type of sulfur-siderite composite ReF (SSCReF) with a structure of natural siderite powders eventually embedded into sulfur. SSCReFs exhibited many excellent propertie

High-rate iron sulfide and sulfur-coupled autotrophic denitrification system: Nutrients removal performance and microbial characterization.

Iron sulfides-based autotrophic denitrification (IAD) is a promising technology for nitrate and phosphate removal from low C:N ratio wastewater due to its cost-effectiveness and low sludge production. However, the slow kinetics of IAD, compared to other sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification (SAD) processes, limits its engineering application. This study constructed a co-electron-donor (FeS and S0 with a volume ratio of 2:1) iron sulfur autotrophic denitrification (ISAD) biofilter and operated at as short as 1 hr hydraulic retention time (HRT). Long-term operation results showed that the sup

The enhancement of iron fuel cell on bio-cathode denitrification and its mechanism as well as the microbial community analysis of bio-cathode.

To address the issue of insufficient electrons during denitrification, an iron fuel cell (IFC) bioreactor using iron as abiotic anode was designed. The nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) of IFC (2.54 ± 0.016%) was significantly lower than microbial fuel cell (MFC) (32.58 ± 0.033%) with same bio-cathode under autotrophic conditions, which was due to the permeation of acetate on proton exchange membrane (PEM) affected the process of enriching autotrophic denitrifying bacteria by MFC. When used in heterotrophic conditions, the NRE of the closed-circuits of IFC was 29.04%, 10.53%, 8.33% higher than

Sulfur-carbon loop enhanced efficient nitrogen removal mechanism from iron sulfide-mediated mixotrophic partial denitrification/anammox systems.

This study successfully established Iron Sulfide-Mediated mixotrophic Partial Denitrification/Anammox system, achieving nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency of 97.26% and 78.12%, respectively, with COD/NO3--N of 1.00. Isotopic experiments and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy analysis confirmed that iron sulfide enhanced autotrophic Partial Denitrification performance. Meanwhile, various sulfur valence states functioned as electron buffers, reinforcing nitrogen and sulfur cycles. Microbial community analysis indicated reduced heterotrophic denitrifiers (OLB8, OLB13) under lower COD/NO3--N

Enhancement mechanism of iron autotrophic denitrification system based on resource utilization of waste membranes.

Microbial-mediated iron autotrophic denitrification has gained more attention in low C/N wastewater treatment due to the organic carbon-free operation, and minimal carbon emissions. However, the selection of inexpensive iron-based electron donors, as well as the stable colonization of functional microorganisms, still restrict its application of the microbial-mediated iron autotrophic denitrification technology. In this study, we ingeniously inserted the waste iron wires into the waste membrane filaments as a component for the combination of the carrier and the electron donors. The cooperation

Cost-Efficient Autotrophic High-Cell-Density Cultivation of Cupriavidus necator Enabled by Model-Based Gas Supply.

Cultivating hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria (HOB), such as Cupriavidus necator, using H 2 , CO 2 , and O 2 offers a promising route for CO 2 valorization into chemicals and materials. To enhance cultivation efficiency in a lab-scale gas fermenter lacking a gas recycling system, an automated gas supply strategy based on real-time CO 2 and O 2 monitoring was developed. Fine-tuning gas delivery is essential to ensure an adequate supply for cellular growth while minimizing excess gas, particularly H 2 , that leaves the bioreactor unused, to improve proc

Unusual regulation of the CO2 concentrating mechanism of marine chemolithoautotroph Thiomicrospira pelophila.

Autotrophic organisms fix dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC: CO2, HCO3-, CO3-2) into biomass, introducing organic carbon into the global carbon cycle. Many lineages of autotrophs developed CO2 concentrating mechanisms (CCMs) to grapple with the catalytic constraints of the carboxylase of the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RubisCO). Carboxysomes and DIC transporters act together to form CCMs, which facilitate DIC fixation by autotrophic bacteria when DIC is scarce. Autotroph Thiomicrospira pelophila has carboxysomes, with an unusual carbonic anhydras

Construction of heterotrophic-sulfur autotrophic integrated fluidized bed reactor for simultaneous and efficient removal of compound pollution of perchlorate and nitrate in water.

A heterotrophic sulfur autotrophic integrated fluidized bed reactor was established for simultaneous and efficient removal of ClO4- and NO3- from water. The optimum operating conditions forecasted through the response surface method (RSM) were the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 0.50 h, the influent acetate (CH3COO-) concentration of 55 mg/L and the reflux ratio of 14, contributing to ClO4- and NO3- removal of 98.99% and 99.96%, respectively, without secondary pollution caused by residual carbon (NPOC <3.89 mg/L). Meanwhile, the effluent pH fluctuated in a range of 6.70-8.02 and sulfur-conta

Suspended sludge-biofilm niche cooperation enables stable mainstream nitrogen removal via mixotrophic partial denitrification coupled with anammox.

The sustainable application of partial denitrification/anammox (PD/A) under mainstream wastewater conditions depends critically on relieving the strong competition between heterotrophic and autotrophic microorganisms for substrates and ecological space. In this study, ferrous sulfide (FeS) was employed as a biofilm carrier to establish a mixotrophic PD/A (MPD/A), which maintained a total nitrogen removal efficiency of 90.25% under fluctuating organic carbon conditions in mainstream wastewater. To elucidate how niche differentiation between suspended sludge and biofilms supports synergistic nit

Transition from sulfur autotrophic to mixotrophic denitrification: Performance with different carbon sources, microbial community and artificial neural network modeling.

To address the limitations inherent in both sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SAD) and heterotrophic denitrification (HD) processes, this study introduces a novel approach. Three carbon sources (glucose, methanol, and sodium acetate) were fed into the SAD system to facilitate the transition towards mixotrophic denitrification. Batch experiments were conducted to explore the effects of influencing factors (pH, HRT) on the denitrification performance of the mixotrophic system. Carbon source dosages were varied at 12.5%, 25%, and 50% of the theoretical amounts required for HD (18, 36, and 72 mg

New insights into deep nitrogen removal in WWTP effluent: Performance and mechanisms of autotrophic denitrification filters.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) face increasing demands for enhanced nitrogen removal from their effluents, yet current removal efficiencies remain suboptimal. The sulfur-siderite-magnetite autotrophic denitrification (SSMAD) system has been shown to achieve high nitrogen removal efficiency in previous studies. Nevertheless, the design and optimization of such reactors have garnered insufficient systematic research attention. This study designed four reaction devices with distinct configurations. All devices were packed with fillers of the SSMAD system. The results indicate that the Vertic

A curated resource of chemolithoautotrophic genomes and marker genes for CO₂ fixation pathway prediction.

Autotrophic CO₂ fixation is a fundamental metabolic process that enables microorganisms to inhabit carbon-limited environments. Multiple pathways mediate this process, with variants distributed across diverse taxa and some genes shared among pathways, making their identification from genomic data challenging. Here, we present a curated resource comprising pathway-specific KEGG Orthology marker genes and a lightweight, rule-based tool AutoFixMark for predicting the presence of seven known CO₂ fixation pathways in microbial genomes. To support marker gene identification and benchmarking, we comp

Sulfur Autotrophic Denitrification Treatment of Dibasic Acid Wastewater From Adipic Acid Production Coupled With Residual Sulfur Recovery.

Highly toxic dibasic acid (DBA) wastewater, a by-product of oxalic acid production, suppresses microbial activity and causes incomplete organic degradation, necessitating efficient and economical technologies for compliant discharge and resource recovery. Mixed DBA wastewater from adipic acid production was treated by sulfur autotrophic denitrification, with a comprehensive analysis of wastewater toxicity, the effect of sulfur particle size on reactor performance, and reclaim elemental sulfur from the resulting sludge. The results showed that the major organics in the DBA wastewater were valer

Sulfur vacancies enhance pyrite-driven autotrophic denitrification: mechanistic insights into electron-supplying pathways.

Pyrite-driven autotrophic denitrification (PAD) is a promising carbon-free strategy for nitrate-contaminated wastewater treatment, yet the role of sulfur vacancies (SVs) remains poorly understood. Herein, we investigated the effects of SVs on denitrification activity, interfacial reactivity, and microbial mechanisms in PAD. Electrochemical characterization and batch tests indicated that SVs introduction boosted electron release from pyrite, achieving 98.1% nitrate removal, 1.59-fold higher than pristine pyrite. By integrating X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, density functional theory calculat

Microbial iron oxide respiration coupled to sulfide oxidation.

Microorganisms have driven Earth's sulfur cycle since the emergence of life1-6, yet the sulfur-cycling capacities of microorganisms and their integration with other element cycles remain incompletely understood. One such uncharacterized metabolism is the coupling of sulfide oxidation with iron(III) oxide reduction, a ubiquitous environmental process hitherto considered to be strictly abiotic7,8. Here we present a comprehensive genomic analysis of sulfur metabolism across prokaryotes, and reveal bacteria that are capable of oxidizing sulfide using extracellular solid phase iron(III). Genomic insights into the alphaproteobacterium Georhizobium sp. MAB10 revealed a pathway of Mn(II) oxidation-coupled anoxygenic photoautotrophy: a novel understanding of the biotic process in deep-sea ferromanganese nodule formation.

UNLABELLED: Under light conditions, Mn(II) facilitates the photoautotrophic growth of Georhizobium sp. MAB10, a strain derived from deep-sea ferromanganese nodules, along with the generation of dark Mn oxides (β-MnO2). This study investigated the genetic basis of Mn(II) oxidation-coupled anoxygenic photoautotrophy using genome sequencing and biochemical assays of strain MAB10. Preliminary results indicated the presence of genes encoding a functional pheophytin-quinone-type photosynthetic reaction center and a putative key enzyme for Mn(II) oxidation, namely FtsP/CotA-like multicopper oxidase G
