Altered spreading of neuronal avalanches in temporal lobe epilepsy relates to cognitive performance: A resting-state hdEEG study.

OBJECTIVE: Large aperiodic bursts of activations named neuronal avalanches have been used to characterize whole-brain activity, as their presence typically relates to optimal dynamics. Epilepsy is characterized by alterations in large-scale brain network dynamics. Here we exploited neuronal avalanches to characterize differences in electroencephalography (EEG) basal activity, free from seizures and/or interictal spikes, between patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and matched controls. METHOD: We defined neuronal avalanches as starting when the z-scored source-reconstructed EEG signals

Avalanche-Enhanced Infrared Photodetection via Interlayer Absorption in a WSe2/MoS2 Heterostructure.

Infrared photodetectors are crucial for a broad range of emerging optical applications. Type-II band alignment in two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures whose constituent layers possess visible-range bandgaps enables sub-bandgap infrared photoresponse via interlayer optical transitions. However, the responsivity of such devices remains limited by intrinsically weak optical absorption associated with interlayer transitions. Here, we demonstrate an interlayer-absorption avalanche photodiode based on a WSe2/MoS2 heterostructure, harnessing avalanche multiplication to overcome the weak interlayer a

Surviving 20 Hours of Critical Avalanche Burial and a Core Temperature of 22.5 °C.

A 24-year-old male snowboarder was buried in an avalanche for 20 h and rescued on the next day at a depth of 2.3 m below the snow surface. A large air pocket was noted in front of his mouth and nose. He was responsive but moved restlessly and uncoordinatedly. The epitympanic temperature was 22.5 °C. He was bradycardic (35/min), and a right bundle branch block with Osborn waves was noted. Rewarming (1 °C/h) was initiated with continuous hemodialysis; core temperature raised to 29.8 °C within 4 h. At 30 °C he became conscious. With rewarming, the heart rate increased to 90 beats per minute and t

Electromagnetic Interference from Heated Gloves May Compromise Avalanche Transceiver Function.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid location of avalanche victims by companions using avalanche transceivers is of utmost importance to prevent asphyxiation. The objective was to determine whether electromagnetic interference from heating elements in gloves worn by rescuers or victims can impair the receiving or transmitting function of avalanche beacons. METHODS: Commercially available heated gloves from 3 different manufacturers were examined during a simulated search with 3 common brands of avalanche transceivers. Distance to target beacon at first signal detection and accuracy of direction to target, as

Witnessed Cardiac Arrest in a Hypothermic Avalanche Victim Completely Buried for 2 Hours.

A 34-y-old skier triggered a wind slab avalanche and was completely buried for over 2 h. After extrication by rescuers, the victim was breathing and conscious. Despite directions from the rescuers against standing up, the victim struggled to free himself and ultimately stood upright before collapsing in cardiac arrest. The rescuers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation during transport to a nearby trailhead, where a helicopter emergency medical services crew found that the victim was in ventricular fibrillation. After further resuscitative efforts, including advanced life support, the victim

[Life-saving air supported avalanche mission at night in high alpine terrain].

This is a case report about a helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) operation during the night in response to an avalanche accident with two completely buried victims. One of the victims was rescued alive after 9.2 h presenting with a patent airway and an air pocket and was successfully rewarmed with forced air from 23°C core temperature without any neurological deficits. After the rescue the patient developed lung edema which resolved spontaneously within 2 days. The second victim was found dead presenting with an air pocket but solid frozen thorax. The special circumstances of the resc

Prevention of Hypothermia in the Aftermath of Natural Disasters in Areas at Risk of Avalanches, Earthquakes, Tsunamis and Floods.

Throughout history, accidental hypothermia has accompanied natural disasters in cold, temperate, and even subtropical regions. We conducted a non-systematic review of the causes and means of preventing accidental hypothermia after natural disasters caused by avalanches, earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods. Before a disaster occurs, preventive measures are required, such as accurate disaster risk analysis for given areas, hazard mapping and warning, protecting existing structures within hazard zones to the greatest extent possible, building structures outside hazard zones, and organising rapid an

Phase Transition and an Instanton Model of Geiger-Mode Pulses in Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes.

A theoretical study categorizing the modes or the "phase" of the carrier dynamics in a single-photon avalanche diode is presented. For the basic model described by a nonlinear Lienard equation, a Lagrangian, a Hamiltonian, and a Lyapunov function are identified. From the energetics studies, variation in the phases is found to be described by the profile (symmetry) change in the available energy induced by change in the quenching resistance value. Each phase is found to correspond to an operational mode of the device; a diode biased at the breakdown voltage, Impact Ionization Transit-Time Diode

Self-Propagating Acid Avalanche Unleashes Endogenous Iron to Fuel Potentiated Chemodynamic Therapy.

The therapeutic efficacy of chemodynamic therapy (CDT) is intrinsically compromised by the mildly acidic tumor microenvironment (TME), which fails to satisfy the stringent pH demands required to mobilize endogenous iron for sustainable Fenton reactions. Herein, we propose a self-propagating "acid avalanche" strategy using CD44-targeting USGND@HMCS (i.e., ultrasmall gold nanodots-anchored hollow mesoporous copper sulfide) nanoreactors to hijack organelle homeostasis and unleash intracellular iron depots for catastrophic tumor destruction. Upon accumulation in TME, the nanoreactors degrade to re

Causes of death and types of injuries of avalanche fatalities based on forensic data: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The main causes of death in avalanche victims are asphyxia, trauma, and hypothermia. However, most evidence is based on epidemiological studies with inconsistent forensic data. We aimed to integrate current evidence on causes of death and types of injuries in avalanche victims undergoing postmortem examination. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of studies reporting forensic data on avalanche-related deaths. Eligible studies included victims who underwent postmortem examination, excluding those buried in buildings or vehicles. Extracted data included study and population chara

Respiratory Gas Shifts to Delay Asphyxiation in Critical Avalanche Burial: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: People who are critically buried by an avalanche typically die of asphyxia within 35 minutes, often making timely rescue impossible. The development of new strategies to delay asphyxiation is crucial to improve survival rates. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of a novel, user-carried avalanche safety device that delivers airflow from avalanche debris to the user's airway without requiring supplemental oxygen or a mouthpiece. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This randomized, blinded, clinical trial was organized by 4 institutions and conducted at 1 field location in Italy

Noncompressible chest wall in critically buried avalanche victims with cardiac arrest: a case series. High Alt Med Biol. 26:129-133, 2025. Introduction: In avalanche victims with cardiac arrest, a noncompressible chest wall or frozen body is a contraindication to initiating cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The evidence sustaining this recommendation is low. Objective: To describe the characteristics and prehospital management of critically buried avalanche victims declared dead on site,

Finite-Element Modeling of the Temperature Effect on Extended Avalanche Damage of Gas Main Pipelines.

The dynamic stress-strain state and fracture of a steel main gas pipe section between supports with a straight-through crack was analyzed with consideration of the temperature effect on changes in the mechanical properties of the pipe material. The numerical solution of the problem was implemented in the ANSYS-19.2/Explicit Dynamics software package. The process of fracture in a section of the gas pipeline "Beineu-Bozoy-Shymkent" with a linear crack in the temperature range of -40 °C to +50 °C at the operating pressure of 7.5 MPa and critical pressure equal to 9.8 MPa was considered. Burial duration, depth and air pocket explain avalanche survival patterns in Austria and Switzerland.

AIM: To calculate the first Austrian avalanche survival curve and update a Swiss survival curve to explore survival patterns in the Alps. METHODS: Avalanche accidents occurring between 2005/06 and 2012/13 in Austria and Switzerland were collected. Completely buried victims (i.e. burial of the head and chest) in open terrain with known outcome (survived or not survived) were included in the analysis. Extrication and survival curves were calculated using the Turnbull algorithm, as in previous studies. RESULTS: 633 of the 796 completely buried victims were included (Austria n=333, Switzerland n

Development of a robust procedure for assessing powder flow using a commercial avalanche testing instrument.

The objectives of this work were to develop a robust procedure for assessing powder flow using a commercial avalanche testing instrument and to define the limits of its performance. To achieve this a series of powdered pharmaceutical excipients with a wide range of flow properties was characterized using such an instrument (Aeroflow, TSI Inc., St. Paul, MN, USA). The experimental conditions (e.g., sample size, rotation speed) were rationally selected and systematically evaluated so that an optimal standard-operating-procedure could be identified. To evaluate the inherent variability of the pro
