A metabolomic study in oats (Avena sativa) highlights a drought tolerance mechanism based upon salicylate signalling pathways and the modulation of carbon, antioxidant and photo-oxidative metabolism.

Although a wealth of information is available on the induction of one or several drought-related responses in different species, little is known of how their timing, modulation and crucially integration influence drought tolerance. Based upon metabolomic changes in oat (Avena sativa L.), we have defined key processes involved in drought tolerance. During a time course of increasing water deficit, metabolites from leaf samples were profiled using direct infusion-electrospray mass spectroscopy (DI-ESI-MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) ESI-MS/MS and analysed using principal co

Whole-grain oats (Avena sativa L.) as a carrier of lactic acid bacteria and a supplement rich in angiotensin I-converting enzyme inhibitory peptides through solid-state fermentation.

This study explored a novel strategy to develop solid-state whole-grain oats as a novel carrier of lactic acid bacteria and a nutraceutical supplement rich in ACE inhibitory peptides. Oats were fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum B1-6, Rhizopus oryzae, or a combination of L. plantarum B1-6 and R. oryzae. L. plantarum showed a much better growth performance in oats when it was combined with R. oryzae than when it was cultured alone, as evidenced by an increase in viable cell count to 9.70 log cfu g-1 after 72 h of fermentation. The coinoculated fermented oats (CFO) and the R. oryzae-fermented

Rhizobacteria regulate colonising Sitobion avenae aphid populations through induced host resistance and alter plant volatiles promoting early parasitoid recruitment on barley (Hordeum vulgare).

BACKGROUND: Soil rhizobacteria can enhance crop resistance to insect herbivores and influence higher trophic interactions, offering potential for sustainable pest management. Aphids are sap-feeding pests that alter plant physiology, reduce yields and transmit plant viruses. Previous work has shown that inoculation with specific rhizobacterial strains can reduce aphid fitness in short-term trials. Here, we extend this approach by testing effects across three plant growth stages in glasshouse experiments, monitoring natural colonisation by aphids and their natural enemies in an outdoor pot study

Standardized wild green oat extract (Avena sativa L.) attenuates sleep deprivation-induced dry eye via restoration of lacrimal cAMP/AQP5-dependent aqueous secretion and meibomian PPAR-γ/FASN-mediated lipid synthesis.

Chronic sleep deprivation (SD) is an increasing risk factor for dry eye disease (DED); however, effective nutritional interventions remain limited. In this study, we investigated the protective efficacy of a standardized wild green oat extract (GOE; Avena sativa L.), a polyphenol-enriched supplement with neuromodulatory and antioxidant properties, against SD-induced DED in mice. Mice were subjected to 16 days of SD and orally administered GOE (10 and 40 mg kg-1, twice daily) from days 5 to 16. SD significantly impaired tear secretion by downregulating lacrimal aquaporin 5 (AQP5) and compromise

Saponarin, a Diglycosyl Flavone from the Ancestral Wheat Triticum monococcum, Is an Allelochemical Reducing the Survival of Cereal Aphids.

The English grain aphid (Sitobion avenae) threatens wheat production through direct feeding and indirectly as a virus vector (e.g., barley yellow dwarf virus - BYDV). Aphid management still relies predominantly on insecticides, an increasingly unsustainable practice; however, host-plant resistance is a promising solution to manage aphids and the viruses that they transmit. Resistance has been recently identified in the ancestor wheat Triticum monococcum MDR045 and MDR049 against S. avenae and Rhopalosiphum padi. In this study, we investigated whether foliar chemistry plays a role in this resis

Central effects of AC-1 and TFG-1.

AC-1 and TFG-1 are both herb extracts from Avena Sativa and Trigonella Foenum Graecum respectively. In folk medicine, Trigonella Foenum Graecum is used as appetiser and general tonic as well as for pellagra treatment and for treatment of pulmonary disorders. Avena Sativa is another commonly used appetiser and tonic. In our study we examined the influence of AC-1 and TFG-1 on some of the major functions of the central nervous system. We divided the test animals in three groups and after administering the herb extracts we monitored different pharmacological parameters-Phenamine toxicity and ster

Plant Volatile Methyl Salicylate Primes Wheat Defense Against the Grain Aphid by Altering the Synthesis of Defense Metabolites.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the most important staple crops all over the world. Its productivity is adversely affected by aphid infestation. Plant volatiles play a critical role in plant communication, inducing direct and indirect defenses against insect pests. However, little is known about the priming mechanism of key volatiles in wheat. To determine whether and how plant volatile induced defense priming in wheat against the grain aphid Sitobion avenae, a combination of insect bioassays, phytohormone and defense metabolite quantification, and transcriptome analyses were performed

The novel kasugamycin 2'-N-acetyltransferase gene aac(2')-IIa, carried by the IncP island, confers kasugamycin resistance to rice-pathogenic bacteria.

Kasugamycin (KSM), a unique aminoglycoside antibiotic, has been used in agriculture for many years to control not only rice blast caused by the fungus Magnaporthe grisea but also rice bacterial grain and seedling rot or rice bacterial brown stripe caused by Burkholderia glumae or Acidovorax avenae subsp. avenae, respectively. Since both bacterial pathogens are seed-borne and cause serious injury to rice seedlings, the emergence of KSM-resistant B. glumae and A. avenae isolates highlights the urgent need to understand the mechanism of resistance to KSM. Here, we identified a novel gene, aac(2')

Crops with potential for diclosulam remediation and concomitant bioenergy production.

The objective of this work was to evaluate crops for their ability to phytoremediate diclosulam residues in the soil and produce lignocellulosic ethanol. Physiological characteristics, biomass production, soil cover rate, fermentable sugar production and lignocellulosic ethanol production potential of the crops were evaluated in soil with diclosulam residues. The experimental design was a randomized block with four replications. The treatments were arranged in a 4 × 2 factorial scheme with the following crops as the first factor: Avena sativa, Canavalia ensiformis, Mucuna aterrima, and Pennise

Cross-Talk Between a Nematode Effector-Targeted Metabolic Enzyme and a Lectin Receptor Kinase Regulates Wheat Immunity.

The cereal cyst nematode (Heterodera avenae) is an obligate plant parasite that severely threatens wheat production. Previous studies have shown that its secreted effector HaGLAND5, suppresses host immunity and promotes nematode parasitism by enhancing acetylation at lysine 39 of TaEMB3003, the E2 subunit of the wheat pyruvate dehydrogenase complex. However, how this molecular interaction precisely regulates the immune response remains unclear. In this study, we identified a wheat L-type lectin receptor kinase, TaLecRK-S.4, and demonstrated its interaction with TaEMB3003. Genetic analyses show

Seasonal dynamics of cereal aphids on Russian wheat aphid (Homoptera: Aphididae) susceptible and resistant wheats.

Field experiments were conducted in 1997 and 1998 to evaluate the impact of resistance to Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), on the cereal aphid complex in wheat. Two spring wheats were planted: the variety "Centennial" (Russian wheat aphid susceptible) and the advanced line IDO488 (Russian wheat aphid resistant). IDO488 incorporates the resistance found in PI 294994 into a Centennial background. Field plots were artificially infested with adult D. noxia and sampled weekly. The most abundant aphid species in 1997 were Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker), Sitobion avenae (F.), D. nox

Synthesis of tricyclic butenolides and comparison their effects with known smoke-butenolide, KAR1.

Plant-derived smoke - butenolide, called at present karrikin 1 (KAR1) is known as an important inductor of seed germination and seedling growth. In this study, tricyclic butenolides were synthesized and their effects on germination of dormant and non-dormant Avena fatua caryopses were compared, as were also their effects versus those of KAR1 on seedling growth. KAR1 was found to be most effective and to completely remove dormancy. Butenolides, rac-8 and (S)-8a, showed a low stimulatory effect on germination of dormant caryopses, visible only when applied at very high concentrations. These comp

Analysis of avenin proteins and the expression of their mRNAs in developing oat seeds.

We have isolated and characterized cDNA clones encoding avenins, the prolamine storage proteins of oat seeds. Sequence analysis shows that avenins are a related group of polypeptides and that their mRNAs differ from each other by point mutations and small insertions and deletions. Avenin proteins have structural homology to the alpha/beta-gliadins and gamma-gliadins of wheat, the B-hordeins of barley, and the gamma-secalins of rye. Hybridization analysis of DNA from various diploid, tetraploid, and hexaploid oat species shows that the oat genome contains more globulin storage protein genes tha

Phytochemical screening and evaluation of antioxidant, total phenolic and flavonoid contents in various weed plants associated with wheat crops.

This study explores the antioxidant activity, phytochemical screening, total phenolic and flavonoids contents in the extracts of four locally available weeds plants namely Convolvulus arvensis, Chenopodium murale, Avena fatua and Phalaris minor with different solvents. The antioxidant activities of these extracts were determined via various in-vitro methods such as total antioxidant activity (TAA), reducing power (RP), DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-Picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assays. Phytochemical screening was performed both qualitatively as well as quantit

Mean warming enhances insect resilience to high temperatures: species-specific evidence from two wheat aphids.

Under climate change, the gradual increase in average temperature is often accompanied by more frequent extreme heat events. However, their biological effects have largely been studied in isolation, overlooking the key interactions between them. Specifically, in short-lived ectotherms, it remains unclear whether mild thermal history across multiple generations alters their thermal performance, thereby influencing their response to subsequent high temperature. Here, we addressed this important issue using a full factorial experiment in which two global aphid species, Sitobion avenae and Rhopalo

Agalactia in mares fed with grain contaminated with Claviceps purpurea.

This article reports an outbreak of intoxication of female horses with Claviceps purpurea in southern Brazil. The outbreak affected twelve pregnant mares which were fed with black oat (Avena strigosa) during the pre-delivery period. Underdevelopment of the mammary gland in the pre-delivery period resulting in post-delivery agalactia was the most pronounced finding. These mares delivered weak and unviable foals, which showed no suckling reflex and died within a few hours of birth. Laboratory analysis of oat samples fed to the animals resulted in the identification of Claviceps purpurea scleroti

Alpaca plant poisonings: nitrate-nitrite and possible cyanide.

Nitrate-nitrite poisoning killed four adult alpacas and induced the abortion of a full-term fetus after access to oaten hay (Avena sativa) containing 3.2% KNO(3) equivalent in dry matter. Necropsy findings were cyanosis, dark-coloured blood, and pulmonary congestion and oedema. Aqueous humour from two adults contained 25 mg NO(3)/L and that from the fetus contained 10 mg NO(3)/L. Cyanide poisoning possibly killed two adult wether alpacas that ate a garden-cultivated variety of Osteospermum ecklonis (South African daisy, bietou) with a cyanide potential of 6800 mg HCN/kg dry matter.

Detection and host specificity of Puccinia digitaticoronata, a new crown rust fungus of Kentucky bluegrass in North America.

In North America, crown rust has emerged as a disease of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) and may cause significant damage. After observing crown rust on Poa spp. in Minnesota and on three East Asian buckthorns (Rhamnus crenata, R. davurica, and R. japonica) in North Dakota, we sequenced one to four loci of nine samples for identification and to determine their placement within Puccinia series Coronata. Earlier studies had shown that the P. coronata var. avenae f. sp. avenae clade caused crown rust of Kentucky bluegrass in North America, but phylogenetic analysis identified our samples as a

Glutenin and gliadin contents of flour derived from wheat infested with different aphid species.

Aphid feeding in cereals results in both quantitative and qualitative yield losses; moreover aphid-transmitted viruses are responsible for other quantitative and qualitative damage so that direct or indirect effects of aphid infection are always of interest. At the beginning of stem elongation, wheat plants were caged regardless of the presence or absence of indigenous cereal aphids. Half of the caged plants were artificially infected with Diuraphis noxia. The number of D noxia and Rhopalosiphum padi individuals on plants destined for flour preparation was approximately 150 aphids per tiller a
