Extreme drought drives contrasting fates of labile and recalcitrant mangrove soil organic matter.

Mangroves are globally important blue carbon ecosystems, yet increasingly threatened by extreme climate events. We investigated sedimentary lipid biomarkers (n-alkanes, n-alcohols, sterols, triterpenoids, triterpenones) across tidal flat, Rhizophora mangle, and Avicennia schaueriana zones in the Piraquê-Açu and Piraquê-Mirim estuarine system (SE Brazil) during the 2015-2016 M-drought. High molecular weight n-alkanes (C29 dominance) and alcohols (C28-C30) indicated persistent vascular plant inputs, supported by elevated Carbon Preference Index values (CPILC = 2.0-4.6; CPIOH = 12.8-16.9). Occurrence and distribution of the environmental pollutant antibiotics in Gaoqiao mangrove area, China.

Occurrence and distribution of 15 antibiotics belonging to families of sulfonamides, fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines and chloramphenicols were investigated in water and sediment in Gaoqiao mangrove area, China, using LC-MS-MS. The influence of tidal level and mangrove vegetation on antibiotic residues were examined. The levels of antibiotics were found to be ranged from 0.15 to 198 ng L(-1) in water and from 0.08 to 849 μg kg(-1) in sediment. No significant difference in concentrations of 15 different antibiotics from water and sediment samples was observed among the high, middle and low inter

Species-specific wave attenuation and cost-effectiveness of mangroves for hybrid coastal defense.

Rising sea levels and intensifying storm surges are amplifying flooding risks in tropical and subtropical coastal regions under climate change. Conventional concrete structures provide reliable flood protection but they are increasingly criticized for their low ecological value and high maintenance costs. As an alternative, nature-based hybrid coastal protection systems, which combine engineering dikes with mangrove foreshores, are gaining recognition for providing both flood mitigation and ecological benefits. However, the wave attenuation performance and cost-effectiveness associated with di

Biogeochemistry of mercury and methylmercury in sediment cores from Sundarban mangrove wetland, India--a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This study was performed to elucidate the distribution, concentration trend and possible sources of total mercury (Hg(T)) and methylmercury (MeHg) in sediment cores (<63 μm particle size; n = 75) of Sundarban mangrove wetland, northeastern part of the Bay of Bengal, India. Total mercury was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) in a Leco AMA 254 instrument and MeHg by gas chromatography-atomic fluorescence spectrometry (GC-AFS). A wide range of variation in Hg(T) (0.032-0.196 μg g(-1) dry wt.) as well as MeHg (0.04-0.13 ng g(-1) dry wt.) concentrations revealed a slight local cont

An inundation threshold regulates nitrate reduction pathways in mangrove sediments.

Estuarine hydrological regimes are increasingly altered by dam operations and extreme climate events, reshaping inundation in intertidal wetlands. However, how inundation regulates nitrate (NO3-) fate remains unclear. We conducted an 18-month, elevation-controlled marsh-organ experiment with Avicennia marina-planted and unvegetated sediments across a 0 %-65 % gradient in mean inundation frequency. We combined 15N isotope tracing and metagenomics to quantify NO3- reduction pathways and associated microbial attributes. In unvegetated sediments, increasing inundation reduced the contribution of d

Distinct root apoplastic barrier distribution and conserved peroxidase function in desert trees.

The formation of extracellular barriers in roots plays a critical role in maintaining water balance and nutrient homeostasis; however, their molecular composition and physiological roles in desert-adapted plants remain largely unexplored. Here, we examine apoplastic barrier formation in the roots of two arid-adapted, ecologically and economically important tree species: date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) and grey mangrove (Avicennia marina). In date palm, lignin and suberin showed complementary distribution patterns within the outer root layers. In mangrove roots, lignin accumulated in the epider

Hybrid CuO-Al₂O₃-ZnO nanoparticles synthesized via a green route for advanced polyurethane-based marine antifouling coatings.

This investigation presents an original and environmentally sustainable approach for inhibiting marine biofouling using ecologically synthesized CuO-Al₂O₃-ZnO hybrid nanoparticles embedded in a polyurethane matrix. Copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles were biosynthesized utilizing Padina sp. extract, zinc oxide (ZnO) was extracted of Avicennia marina, and aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) was utilized as a formulation using Sargassum sp. extract, all of which served as natural reducing and stabilization agents. To confirm uniformity as well as the formation of the hybrid, structural characterization studies

Short Communication An efficient method for simultaneous extraction of high-quality RNA and DNA from various plant tissues.

Determination of gene expression is an important tool to study biological processes and relies on the quality of the extracted RNA. Changes in gene expression profiles may be directly related to mutations in regulatory DNA sequences or alterations in DNA cytosine methylation, which is an epigenetic mark. Correlation of gene expression with DNA sequence or epigenetic mark polymorphism is often desirable; for this, a robust protocol to isolate high-quality RNA and DNA simultaneously from the same sample is required. Although commercial kits and protocols are available, they are mainly optimized

Biodegradability-driven nanoplastic modulation of copper fate and toxicity in wetland plants.

Nanoplastics (NPs) are increasingly detected in wetlands and may interact with co-occurring metals, yet the influence of NP biodegradability on metal fate and phytotoxicity remains poorly understood. This study investigated how NP biodegradability modulated copper (Cu) uptake and toxicity in wetland plants, using the mangrove Avicennia marina as a model. Seedlings were exposed to Cu alone and in combination with three types of NPs: non-biodegradable polystyrene (PS), biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA), and polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) in 30-day sediment microcosms. Biodegradable

Retention of CdS/ZnS Quantum Dots (QDs) on the Root Epidermis of Woody Plant and Its Implications by Benzo[a]pyrene: Evidence from the in Situ Synchronous Nanosecond Time-Resolved Fluorescence Spectra Method.

The retention of CdS/ZnS QDs on the epidermis has been confirmed to be one of the core procedures during the root uptake process. However, the retention mechanisms of QDs on the epidermis of woody plant were poorly understood for lacking of an appropriate QD quantitative method. In this study, a novel method for in situ determination of CdS/ZnS QDs retained on the root epidermis was established using synchronous nanosecond time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. No correlations between Kf values of oleylamine-CdS/ZnS QDs retained on the epidermal tissues and the surface/bulk composition of ma

[Ecology of Glossina palpalis VANDERPLANK, 1949 (Diptera: Glossinidae) in mangrove area of Guinea: influence of tides on tsetse densities].

The mangrove area on the Guinea littoral constitutes a favourable habitat for transmission of Trypanosoma brucei gambiens, the parasite causing sleeping sickness also called Human African Trypanosmosis (HAT), due the simultaneous presence of the vector (tsetse flies) and the human hosts. In order to assess the influence of the sea tides on the densities of Glossina palpalis gambiensis (Gpg), major vector of HAT in the mangrove, entomological surveys were performed using two transects, according to tides coefficient (great and small) and tide daily fluctuations (high and low). On each transect,

Conservation of biodiversity of the coastal resources of Sundarbans, Northeast India: an integrated approach through environmental education.

The Indian Sundarbans, a diversified coastal wetland on the southern fringe of the State of West Bengal, harbors a luxuriant biodiversity and acts as a potential refuge of living marine resources. Girdled with thick mangrove foliage, this estuarine delta system offers an excellent nursery ground for most of the brackishwater finfish and shellfish. Since supply of hatchery-produced tiger prawn seed (Penaeus monodon) is highly inadequate in West Bengal, the aquaculture farms of this region largely depend on the supply from natural resources. Being motivated by a regular cash income, the majority

Green synthesis of CuO nanoparticles using mangrove leaves for targeted delivery of platinum (II) therapeutics.

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) synthesized via green chemistry using Avicennia marina mangrove leaf extract represent an environmentally sustainable approach to generating biocompatible nanomaterials for pharmaceutical applications. This study utilized the phytochemical-rich extract as both a reducing and capping agent to produce quasi-spherical monoclinic CuO NPs with a diameter range of 35-87 nm. The resulting nanoparticles possessed a specific surface area of 4.5 m² g⁻¹ with a mesoporous structure (pore volume of 0.018 cm³ g⁻¹), making them ideal candidates for drug loading applicatio

Dynamics of tannin variations in mangrove leaf litter decomposition and their effects on environmental nitrogen and microbial activity.

Tannins play vital roles in regulating ecological processes in mangrove forests. However, how tannins affect nitrogen (N) cycling and microbial metabolism in mangrove ecosystems remains largely unexplored. In this study, we hypothesized the types and amounts of tannins released into seawater and sediments during leaf litter decomposition differed among mangrove plant species, thus their effects on N and microbial metabolism also varied. The alterations of tannins, and environmental N and microbial metabolism during leaf litter decomposition of Kandelia obovata, Avicennia marina, and Sonneratia

Carbon and nitrogen pools and mobile fractions in surface soils across a mangrove saltmarsh ecotone.

In the subtropics, climate change is pushing woody mangrove forests into herbaceous saltmarshes, altering soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) pools, with implications for coastal wetland productivity and C and N exports. We quantified total C and N pools, and mobile fractions including extractable mineral N, extractable organic C and N, and active (aerobically mineralizable) C and N, in surface soils (top 7.6 cm) of adjacent mangrove (primarily Avicennia germinans) and saltmarsh (Juncus roemerianus) vegetation zones in tidal wetlands of west-central Florida (USA). Flushing emissions of methane and carbon dioxide from mangrove soils during tidal cycles.

Mangroves are transition areas connecting land, freshwater, and the ocean, where a great amount of organic carbon accumulates in the soil, forming a considerable carbon sink. However, the soil might also be a source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study hypothesized that measuring GHG emissions solely during low tides can represent diurnal GHG emissions in mangroves. Methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were quantified during tidal cycles using an ultraportable gas analyzer in Kandelia obovata (without pneumatophores) and Avicennia marina (with pneumatophores) mangroves in

Pollen Exposed to Aerial Pesticide Spray Is a Major Exposure Pathway for Stingless Bees.

Testing possible exposure routes of pesticides is essential for assessing the risks to pollinators. In Australia, the pesticide Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) is widely used in mosquito control programs and applied aerially to mangrove and saltmarsh habitats. Bti formulations contain both bacterial spores and toxins, allowing detection using DNA-based methods, whereas bee foraging behaviour can be quantified by pollen DNA metabarcoding. We combined these approaches to investigate both the foraging behaviour of stingless bees and their potential exposure to Bti in coastal mosquit
