Bacillus cereus in personal care products: risk to consumers.

Bacillus cereus is ubiquitous in nature and thus occurs naturally in a wide range of raw materials and foodstuffs. B. cereus spores are resistant to desiccation and heat and able to survive dry storage and cooking. Vegetative cells produce several toxins which on ingestion in sufficient numbers can cause vomiting and/or diarrhoea depending on the toxins produced. Gastrointestinal disease is commonly associated with reheated or inadequately cooked foods. In addition to being a rare cause of several acute infections (e.g. pneumonia and septicaemia), B. cereus can also cause localized infection o

A pseudo-tRNA modulates antibiotic resistance in Bacillus cereus.

Bacterial genomic islands are often flanked by tRNA genes, which act as sites for the integration of foreign DNA into the host chromosome. For example, Bacillus cereus ATCC14579 contains a pathogenicity island flanked by a predicted pseudo-tRNA, tRNA(Other), which does not function in translation. Deletion of tRNA(Other) led to significant changes in cell wall morphology and antibiotic resistance and was accompanied by changes in the expression of numerous genes involved in oxidative stress responses, several of which contain significant complementarities to sequences surrounding tRNA(Other).

Toxin gene profiling of enterotoxic and emetic Bacillus cereus.

Very different toxins are responsible for the two types of gastrointestinal diseases caused by Bacillus cereus: the diarrhoeal syndrome is linked to nonhemolytic enterotoxin NHE, hemolytic enterotoxin HBL, and cytotoxin K, whereas emesis is caused by the action of the depsipeptide toxin cereulide. The recently identified cereulide synthetase genes permitted development of a molecular assay that targets all toxins known to be involved in food poisoning in a single reaction, using only four different sets of primers. The enterotoxin genes of 49 strains, belonging to different phylogenetic branch

Fulminant septicaemic syndrome of Bacillus cereus: three case reports.

Three patients with acute leukaemia, who were severely neutropenic and iatrogenically immunosuppressed post-chemotherapy, developed rapidly fatal septicaemic shock and coma caused by Bacillus cereus (B. cereus). The illness was marked by two phases: a mild febrile illness lasting 6-14 h and accompanied by subtle symptoms of autonomic sympathetic nervous system overactivity, and a second short fulminant one, marked by high fever of 40-41 degrees C accompanied by major central nervous system disturbances, and ending with deep coma and brain stem dysfunction. One patient developed the sepsis in s

Ventricular shunt infection and meningitis due to Bacillus cereus.

Non-anthrax Bacillus species are usually considered to be contaminants if found in clinical specimens. Only a few patients with systemic infections due to Bacillus cereus are reported. We present the case of a 18-month old boy with a primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) in the brainstem and obstructive hydrocephalus that required an outlying and subsequently a ventriculoperitoneal drain. Following contamination at the site of entry of the external drain, shunt infection and meningitis with Bacillus cereus developed. Antibiotic treatment with vancomycin failed to eliminate the bacterium from

Posttraumatic endophthalmitis: the emerging role of Bacillus cereus infection.

Endophthalmitis resulting from nonsurgical penetrating trauma to the eye is a relatively uncommon infection in the United States. Data are limited, but most recently published series have attributed the highest incidence of infection to gram-positive organisms, in particular Staphylococcus epidermidis. Fungal causes have been reported far less frequently. Bacillus species are being recognized increasingly as major causes of posttraumatic ocular disease, with rates of infection often making them the second most commonly isolated organisms. Bacillus cereus, an especially virulent pathogen, cause

An Sau3 AI restriction endonuclease isoschizomer from Bacillus cereus.

The isolation and characterization of a restriction endonuclease from Bacillus cereus IOC 243 are described. The enzyme recognizes the palindromic sequence 5'-G(met-A,A)TC-3' as determined by PEI chromatography of pancreatic DNase, snake venom phosphodiesterase digestion products of labelled fragments, analysis of restriction digests from normal and N6-methyladenine-free DNA and direct sequence analysis of cloned fragments. The staggered cleavage products with 5' -terminal pGATC extensions are efficiently labelled with polynucleotide kinase and are easily cloned into BamHI sites. The enzyme, d

The assessment of leading traits in the taxonomy of the Bacillus cereus group.

Bacillus cereus sensu lato strains (B. cereus group) are widely distributed in nature and have received interest for decades due to their importance in insect pest management, food production and their positive and negative repercussions in human health. Consideration of practical uses such as virulence, physiology, morphology, or ill-defined features have been applied to describe and classify species of the group. However, current comparative studies have exposed inconsistencies between evolutionary relatedness and biological significance among genomospecies of the B. cereus group. Here, the

Bacillus cereus necrotizing pneumonia in a patient with nephrotic syndrome.

Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) is a Gram-positive rod that is widely distributed in the environment and can be a cause of food poisoning. We herein present a case of B. cereus necrotizing pneumonia in a patient with nephrotic syndrome under corticosteroid treatment after developing transient gastroenteritis symptoms. B. cereus was isolated from bronchial lavage fluid and transbronchial biopsy specimens. A multiplex polymerase chain reaction analysis of the toxin genes revealed a strain possessing enterotoxicity. The patient recovered after one week of intravenous meropenem followed by a combinati

[A case of sepsis in ILBW infant caused by Bacillus cereus].

Bacillus cereus is an aerobic or facultative anaerobic Gram-positive rod which is ubiquitous in the environment. The incidence of neonatal infections is very low. The clinical course is serious, usually life- threatening or permanently damaging the central nervous system. The immature immune system, subjected to invasive procedures, increases the morbidity risk in this age group, especially in extremely low birth weight infants. Diagnostic difficulties and insusceptibility to ''first- line'' antibiotics can delay effective therapy and increase the risk of its failure. We report a 730 g preterm

[Meningitis due to Bacillus cereus in an infant with Reye syndrome].

OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 2.5-month-old infant with Bacillus cereus meningitis who was initially admitted for Reye syndrome. Gram positive bacteria was isolated in CSF and shown to be located inside the polymorphonuclears. This pathogen was further identified by sequencing of the 16S RNA. Early administration of imipenem in association with amikacin resulted in a rapid recovery. No obvious immune defect or invasive procedure could be assessed. CONCLUSION: Although Bacillus cereus is mainly associated with contamination, repeated isolations of this bacteria may be due to true infect

A novel dodecadepsipeptide, cereulide, is an emetic toxin of Bacillus cereus.

A vacuole-formation substance, cereulide of Bacillus cereus, is an emetic toxin in animals. Both oral administration and intraperitoneal injection of cereulide caused dose-dependent emesis in Suncus murinus, a new animal model of emesis. Vagotomy or a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist completely abolished this emetic effect. Therefore, cereulide causes emesis through the 5-HT3 receptor and stimulation of the vagus afferent. We also found that our purified cereulide caused swelling of mitochondria of HEp-2 cells.

Potential distributions of Bacillus anthracis and Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis causing anthrax in Africa.

BACKGROUND: Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis (Bcbva) is an emergent bacterium closely related to Bacillus anthracis, the etiological agent of anthrax. The latter has a worldwide distribution and usually causes infectious disease in mammals associated with savanna ecosystems. Bcbva was identified in humid tropical forests of Côte d'Ivoire in 2001. Here, we characterize the potential geographic distributions of Bcbva in West Africa and B. anthracis in sub-Saharan Africa using an ecological niche modeling approach. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Georeferenced occurrence data for B. anthracis an

Progress in the study of drug resistance mechanism of Bacillus cereus.

Bacillus cereus is a common foodborne pathogen closely related to various foodborne diseases. The diarrhoea-type enterotoxins and vomiting-type enterotoxins it produces can lead to local or systemic infections. In recent years, resistance in B. cereus has been increasing, and multidrug-resistant bacteria have emerged. Therefore, understanding the drug resistance mechanism of B. cereus has become a matter of considerable concern in scientific research. In addition, this review explores the main resistance mechanisms of B. cereus to antibacterial drugs and discusses the detection and control str

Bacillus cereus Sepsis in a Patient with Severe Alcoholic Hepatitis.

A 57-year-old woman with a liver injury was referred to our hospital. She had a history of heavy alcohol consumption and had developed severe alcoholic hepatitis. Blood cultures revealed bacteremia caused by Bacillus cereus. The patient was treated with short-term steroid therapy for liver injury and vancomycin administration for B. cereus sepsis, which led to recovery. The findings in the present case suggest the need for empirical therapy with vancomycin in patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis and suspected B. cereus infection.
