[The effect of a soil extract on the development of Bacillus thuringiensis and on its synthesis of an insecticidal endotoxin].

Selection of effective and inexpensive nutrient medium for cultivation of entomopathogenic bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis was carried out. The medium with molasses [correction of patoka], corn extract and mineral salts has been chosen. Addition of a soil extract to the medium enhanced growth of microorganisms, increased the rate of culture development, the yield of spore-crystalline material and quantity of synthesized endotoxin. Apparently the strengthening effect belongs to humic substances contained in the soil extract.

Genomic Insights Into Bacillus thuringiensis Strain JSd1 From Bangladesh: A Whole Genome Sequencing Approach.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a well-known entomopathogenic bacterium widely used in biopesticide formulations due to its diverse arsenal of insecticidal toxins and environmental adaptability. However, the genetic diversity and virulence potential of native Bt strains from South Asia remain underexplored. In this study, we performed whole-genome sequencing and comparative genomic analysis of B. thuringiensis strain JSd1, isolated from Bangladeshi soil. The high-quality draft genome, assembled at 75x coverage, comprises 5.39 Mb in 64 contigs with a GC content of 35.28% and 99.26% completeness.

Formulation-dependent sugar regulation enhances biofilm-mediated stability and bioactivity of Bacillus thuringiensis formulations.

Sugars are important carbon sources involved in microbial growth and functional regulation. However, how sugars with different structural characteristics regulate microbial pesticide performance in complex formulation systems remains unclear. In this study, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) formulations were used to systematically evaluate the effects of different sugars on functional traits. The results showed pronounced type-dependent regulatory effects. Sugars with distinct structural features modulated biofilm formation by affecting cell adhesion and extracellular polysaccharide production. An o

Interaction of insecticidal proteins from Pseudomonas spp. and Bacillus thuringiensis for boll weevil management.

Cotton crop yields are largely affected by infestations of Anthonomus grandis, which is its main pest. Although Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) derived proteins can limit insect pest infestations, the diverse use of control methods becomes a viable alternative in order to prolong the use of technology in the field. One of the alternative methods to Bt technology has been the utilization of certain Pseudomonas species highly efficient in controlling coleopteran insects have been used to produce highly toxic insecticidal proteins. Potential control of the infective stage of Taenia pisiformis using Bacillus thuringiensis GP526 strain.

The GP526 strain of Bacillus thuringiensis has been referred as an in vitro helminthicide on various stages of Dipylidium caninum and Centrocestus formosanus. Our study addresses the in vitro ovicidal activity of GP526 strain spore-crystal complex on Taenia pisiformis eggs, evaluating induced damage microscopically. The eggs exposed to the total extract containing spores and crystals show damage after 24 hours, with loss of integrity on the eggshell, and an ovicidal activity of 33% at 1mg/ml. The destruction of the embryophore was observed after 120 h with a 72% of ovicidal activity at 1 mg/ml

Optimal Fast Integral Decontamination of Bacillus thuringiensis Aerosols and Fast Disinfection of Contaminated Surfaces.

Aerosolized anthrax (Bacillus anthracis) spores are of extreme health concern and can remain airborne for hours and contaminate all kinds of surfaces, constituting reservoirs from which resuspension is easily produced. The assessment of decontamination techniques must therefore consider both air and surfaces. In the present study, several kinds of disinfecting fogs were experimentally tested against Bacillus thuringiensis spores, which served as a surrogate for Bacillus anthracis, both as aerosols released into the air and spread on porous and non-porous surfaces with different positions and o

Community-Based Control of Malaria Vectors Using Bacillus thuringiensis var. Israelensis (Bti) in Rwanda.

Larval source management (LSM) programs for control of malaria vectors are often vertically organized, while there is much potential for involving local communities in program implementation. To address this, we evaluated the entomological impact of community-based application of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) in a rice irrigation scheme in Ruhuha, Rwanda. A non-randomized trial with control compared a Bti implementation program that was supervised by the project team (ES) with a program that was led and carried out by local rice farming communities (CB). One other area served a

Online monitoring of Escherichia coli and Bacillus thuringiensis spore inactivation after advanced oxidation treatment.

Various studies have shown that advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) such as UV light in combination with hydrogen peroxide is an efficient process for the removal of a large variety of emerging contaminants including microorganisms. The mechanism of destruction in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is the enhanced formation of hydroxyl (·OH) radicals, which have a high oxidation potential. The goal of this study was to utilize in-line advanced oxidation to inactivate microbes, and document the inactivation via an in-line, real-time sensor. Evolution of resistance to the Bacillus sphaericus Bin toxin is phenotypically masked by combination with the mosquitocidal proteins of Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis.

Two insecticidal bacteria are used as larvicides to control larvae of nuisance and vector mosquitoes in many countries, Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. israelensis and B. sphaericus. Field studies show both are effective, but serious resistance, as high as 50 000-fold, has evolved where B. sphaericus is used against Culex mosquitoes. To improve efficacy and deal with even greater potential problems of resistance, we previously developed several recombinant larvicidal bacteria that combine the best mosquitocidal proteins of these bacteria. In the present study, we report laboratory selection studie

Harnessing Multifunctional Bacillus thuringiensis for Plant Growth Promotion and Biocontrol Potential Against Spodoptera frugiperda.

Bacillus thuringiensis is the most widely used microbial bioinsecticide; however, only a few strains possess additional traits such as plant growth promotion and biocontrol potential. This study characterized 25 B. thuringiensis isolates obtained from soil and infected insect cadavers to identify multifunctional strains with insecticidal and plant growth-promoting (PGP) properties. Microscopic examination revealed diverse parasporal crystal morphologies, while 16S rRNA sequencing confirmed their identity with 99%-100% similarity to reference strains. Enzymatic profiling showed protease activit

A protein engineering of Bacillus thuringiensis δ-endotoxin by conjugating with 4"-O-succinoyl abamectin.

Conjugation of Bacillus thuringiensis δ-endotoxin (Bt toxin) with other toxins for insect pest control has been proposed as a new efficient strategy with increasing insecticidal toxicity and target range and delay the onset of insect resistance. A modified method was investigated by conjugating Bt toxin with 4"-O-succinoyl abamectin to form a new biocide which was named as BtA. 'Zero-length' cross-linker EDC in combination with NHS activated 4"-O-succinoyl abamectin and extended half-life period of active intermediate for binding to Bt toxin. [Effect of mineral nutrition sources on the growth and toxin formation of the entomopathogenic bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis].

Mineral composition of culture medium has been studied for its effect on the processes of growth, spore-and-toxin formation of entomopathogenic bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis. It has been shown that salts Na2SO4, Na2SiO3.9H2O, MgSO4.7H2O increase the yield of biomass and endotoxin; FeSO4.7H2O, CaCl2, MnSO4.4H2O increase only the yield of biomass; CdSO4.7H2O and CoCl2.6H2O--inhibit the processes of spore-and-toxin formation, but increase the cell titre. A complex of mineral salts has been found which takes positive effect on the biomass accumulation, delta-endotoxin synthesis and insecticide a

The potential for malaria control with the biological larvicide Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) in Peru and Ecuador.

A study on the efficacy of Bti spraying in mosquito breeding places was undertaken in the Pacific coast of Peru and Ecuador and in the Amazon area of Peru. It was shown that Bti is a powerful larvicide for Anopheles larvae, although it sinks quickly, whereas Anopheles larvae feed at the water surface. The duration of its effect was less than 7 days with the exception of the Amazon area of Peru, where it was approximately 10 days. In two study areas, Bti was sprayed weekly over periods of 10 and 7 weeks, respectively, and the adult mosquito densities were monitored. The Anopheles adult density

Bacillus thuringiensis contamination as a biological hazard to embryogenesis of Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda in Malaysian tropical coasts.

Several marine arthropods rely on external fertilization and beach-based egg incubation. This includes Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda, a horseshoe crab species with embryogenesis of 40 days. During this period, C. rotundicauda eggs were exposed to thermal stress and fluctuating tidal conditions, potentially increasing vulnerability to biological contaminants. In this study, abnormal eggs, indicated with red embryonic envelop were sampled from a nesting site potentially impacted by perturbation through anthropogenic activities.
