Exposure to radiation from the natural radioactivity in Tunisian building materials.

Building materials can expose public and workers to radiation because of their content of radium, thorium and potassium isotopes. This is why it is very important from the radiological point of view to survey the natural radioactivity content of commonly used building materials in any country. This work consists of the measurement of (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K activity concentrations in a variety of commonly used building materials in Tunisia and on the estimation of their radiological hazard. The maximum value of radium equivalent for the studied materials was equal to 169 Bq kg(-1) and corre

Geological and climatic influences on natural radioactivity in drinking water and their health impacts: a study of Dessie and Kombolcha towns, Ethiopia.

This study examines the geological and climatic factors that influence natural radioactivity levels in drinking water from Dessie and Kombolcha towns in Ethiopia's northern plateau. The basaltic and sedimentary mudrock formations of the region contain high levels of natural radionuclide elevated natural radionuclide levels, while climatic factors such as precipitation, soil moisture, and humidity enhance their mobility and transport into water sources. Kombolcha, situated at a Lower altitude geographically, exhibits higher radionuclide concentrations for 238U and 232Th. All measured values are

Release and fractionation of naturally occurring radionuclides in geothermal systems and the potential role of organic matter.

Geothermal installations in Europe generate Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) as mineral and organic precipitates in wellbore casings, pipelines, heat exchangers, and filters. Naturally occurring radionuclides (NOR) of and progeny are released from reservoir rocks together with natural organic matter, while synthetic organic compounds from scale and corrosion inhibitors add to the total organic content of geothermal brines. NOR release from reservoir rocks and mechanisms of fractionation (i.e. physical and chemical separation of radionuclides to phases of matter resulting to part

Environmental health physics: 50 years of progress.

Environmental health physics is an interdisciplinary field, involving study of the release, transport, and fate of radioactive material in the environment. Further, it addresses the interaction of humans with radioactive materials within the ambient (outdoor) environment and with the environments associated with modern technology and lifestyles. It also involves both naturally occurring and artificially produced radionuclides with the former generally being by far the highest source of exposure. In fact, doses from naturally occurring radionuclides are increasingly being used as a benchmark fo

Epidemiological studies of natural sources of radiation and childhood cancer: current challenges and future perspectives.

The empirical estimation of cancer risks in children associated with low-dose ionising radiation (<100 mSv) remains a challenge. The main reason is that the required combination of large sample sizes with accurate and comprehensive exposure assessment is difficult to achieve. An international scientific workshop, 'Childhood cancer and background radiation', organised by the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine of the University of Bern, brought together researchers in this field to evaluate how epidemiological studies of background radiation and childhood cancer can best improve our und

Evaluation of radiological impacts of tenorm in the Tunisian petroleum industry.

The health impacts associated with uncontrolled release of TENORM in products and wastes released in the petroleum industry are of great concern. In this study, evaluation of TENORM in the Tunisian petroleum products and wastes is presented. Fourteen products samples, twelve waste samples and three samples from the surrounding environment were collected from the Tunisian Refinery STIR site and from two onshore production oilfields. The activity concentrations of (232)Th, (226)Ra and (40)K for all samples were determined using gamma-ray spectrometry with High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector. T

Altitude, radiation, and mortality from cancer and heart disease.

The variation in background radiation levels is an important source of information for estimating human risks associated with low-level exposure to ionizing radiation. Several studies conducted in the United States, correlating mortality rates for cancer with estimated background radiation levels, found an unexpected inverse relationship. Such results have been interpreted as suggesting that low levels of ionizing radiation may actually confer some benefit. An environmental factor strongly correlated with background radiation is altitude. Since there are important physiological adaptations ass

Monitoring of natural radionuclides in soil of District Gurugram, Haryana (India), by gamma spectrometry and statistical analysis.

Radioactive pollutants in soil continuously expose humans and contribute to the radiation dose to the public. Thirty-eight soil samples were collected from the District Gurugram, Haryana (India), and analyzed using a high-purity germanium detector-based gamma ray spectrometry technique. Potassium-40 (40 K), thorium-232 (232Th), and radium-226 (226Ra) activities were measured in soil samples. Activities of 40 K, 232Th, and 226Ra were found as 342 ± 10 to 760 ± 16 Bq/kg with an average of 568 Bq/kg, 35 ± 1.0 to 83 ± 3.4 Bq/kg with an average of 55 Bq/kg, and 48 ± 1.9 to 90 ± 3.7 Bq/kg with an av

Performance of data acceptance criteria over 50 months from an automatic real-time environmental radiation surveillance network.

The automatic real-time environmental radiation surveillance network of Catalonia (Spain) comprises two subnetworks; one with 9 aerosol monitors and the other with 8 Geiger monitors together with 2 water monitors located in the Ebre river. Since September 2006, several improvements were implemented in order to get better quality and quantity of data, allowing a more accurate data analysis. However, several causes (natural causes, equipment failure, artificial external causes and incidents in nuclear power plants) may produce radiological measured values mismatched with the own station backgrou

[Nondrug treatment for opisthorchiasis].

In vitro experimental studies of the antiopisthorchiasis properties of currently available non-drug treatment are ofgreat practical value. The studies demonstrated that the herbal drug ecorsol and the background resonance radiation of the Opisthorchis spectrum exerted an anti-helminthic effect that was evaluated by the marital death and amounted to 83.6 to 96.4%. The experimental studies provided evidence that the background radiation, by using the electromagnetic spectrum of Opisthorchis, had a sufficient helminthocidal effect on mature Opisthorchis felineus in the in vitro experiment, which

A high-resolution map of gamma dose rates in Cluj County, Romania using LiF:Mg,Cu,P detectors.

Outdoor gamma radiation measurements in Cluj County, Romania have been performed using solid-state thermoluminescent detectors in order to develop a high-resolution database for natural gamma dose rates. Integrated measurements have been carried out for an exposure time of minimum 3 weeks. According to European Union requirements, the territory has been divided into 69 grids of 10 × 10 km. The cells were monitored using LiF:Mg,Cu,P detectors. For two locations the results were 136 ± 7 and 150 ± 7 nGy h(-1), respectively. These results can be explained by the existent geological substrate. The

Natural Radiation in the Rocks, Soils, and Groundwater of Southern Florida with a Discussion on Potential Health Impacts.

Southern Florida is underlain by rocks and sediments that naturally contain radioactive isotopes. The primary origin of the radioactive isotopes is Miocene-aged phosphate deposits that can be enriched in uranium-238 and its daughter isotopes. Nodular phosphate containing radionuclides from the Miocene has been reworked into younger formations and is ubiquitous in southern Florida. When the nodular phosphate is exposed to groundwater with geochemical conditions favorable for its dissolution, uranium, radium, and radon may be released into the groundwater system. Uranium concentrations have been

Real and perceived risks of medical radiation exposure.

There is almost no subject that elicits greater concern and less objective understanding than that of exposure of patients to radiation accompanying diagnostic radiologic procedures. One or more of the health effects (cancer, developmental abnormalties and genetic changes) attributed to low-level exposure to radiation are frequently misinterpreted as likely consequences rather than statistical risks following radiation exposure. Even less well understood is the small magnitude of the risks accompanying radiation exposure compared with those related to activities encountered during the daily ro

[Analysis of diagnostic X-Ray units in Poland in view of patients' exposure to ionizing radiation].

An analysis of diagnostic X-ray units in Poland is presented. The air-kerma on the X-ray table was measured for X-ray parameters used routinely during lumbo-sacral spine radiography in a standard patient. The measurements were performed using TLD made of lithium-fluoride. The dose received by patients in different X-ray departments is sometimes higher than two orders of magnitude from 0.14 mGy to 72.11 mGy for the same examination. The dose can be significantly reduced if the cassettes with amplyfying foils, made from rare earth components, are used.

Space: The Final Frontier-Research Relevant to Mars.

A critically important gap in knowledge surrounds the health consequences of exposure to radiation received gradually over time. Much is known about the health effects of brief high-dose exposures, such as from the atomic bombings in Japan, but the concerns today focus on the frequent low-dose exposures received by members of the public, workers, and, as addressed in this paper, astronauts. Additional guidance is needed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for planning long-term missions where the rate of radiation exposure is gradual over years and the cumulative amount

[Morphometric and cytogenetic studies of the follicular epithelium thyroid of small mammals under chronic exposure to small doses].

We have detected the genotoxic effect (increase of micronuclei) after chronic exposure to low-level ionizing radiation of the thyroid follicular epithelium of the voles living for many generations in the radioactive territory. At the same time, we also discovered the stimulating effect of chronic low-level ionizing radiation on the activity of morphogenetic processes in the thyroid parenchyma of the animals from natural populations (increased micro-follicles). These data were confirmed by the experiments; chronic irradiation of the thyroid gland of rats at the doses of 5 and 50 cGy revealed an
